I like how they named this 'From the Fog' because that's originally how the Herobrine myth started. It was said back in the day that he would NEVER appear in your world unless you played with 2 render distance, which at the time had fog you couldn't remove and made visibility practically 0. This was also back in a time when the lighting engine hadn't been reworked and night fell extremely quickly with nights and caves so dark you couldn't see anything without a light of some kind adding even more unease and tension whenever a redstone torch was around.

I remember being a kid with a cruddy computer, needing to use low render distance. You could see the light ticking from daylight to night over time. When I didn't know how the game worked I used to dig a hole into the ground and sit in there until I thought it was daytime again.

THIS is how you do a Herobrine mod. Customizable, eerie, not in-your-face, faithful to the original 4chan story, and doesn't impose too much on normal gameplay. As long as you turn off the base-burning, you can genuinely play a world all the way through with a little extra spookiness. I've been playing this mod with a bunch of other ones that port everything from Beta 1.7.3 to modern Minecraft, and I feel like a 12 year old again :)

That one weirdo on the server that everybody only sees for like a second before he disappears back into the caves, and all you actually see is the side-effects of him being around.

I've been playing this pack for a bit, and my main feedback is Herobrine is far too predictable. Even on the highest rarity setting he shows up often enough that he's just part of the normal day-to-day minecraft loop. It feels like all the events happen at absolute random, and that doesn't allow time for me to forget about Herobrine's absence after encountering him. It's like if I made a game with an ambush around every 5th corner, you'd expect there to be an ambush every 5th corner, you wouldn't be surprised anymore. Something I feel would benefit the datapack immensely would be a sort of "director" which would keep track of when herobrine should be tense and when he should lay off to let the player build up suspense from his absence. I've been playing with the pack largely in multiplayer, so that may be part of the problem, but he still feels too common regardless. Perhaps there could be a check to only haunt players when they're alone as well?

This mod in general seems to cause herobrine events much much more frequently in multiplayer, as I've put it on the lowest setting in the config and it still regularly appears on us constantly. My singleplayer world on the other hand, with the same config settings, haunts extremely rarely. Like 30 mins to an hour inbetween. So it might just be an issue with the mod in multiplayer. But yeah, I agree. I feel that herobrine is a bit too random. Sometimes it appears at really convenient times and genuinely scares me, other times it just appears in places where I have no tension built up and I end up not even flinching. Maybe a mechanic that lowers your "sanity" etc. by doing various actions or going to certain places under certain circumstances etc etc. that causes herobrine to appear more frequently or in more.. appropriate times?

I'd love a version of this for Beta 1.7.3. It'd be the most authentic environment to experience it in, with the old Beta fog, authentic Beta World Gen, etc. There's a lively modding scene for Beta 1.7.3 these days and fantastic modpacks like "Beta 1.7.4" and so on. That is the Minecraft Version Herobrine belongs to. Please consider writing a version of From the Fog for Beta 1.7.3. There's even both Fabric and Forge for Beta 1.7.3.

love the mod! quick question, are there currently any plans to add older versions of minecraft? like im talking beta 1.7.3 . back when herobrine was at its peak, when minecraft genuinely just used to feel more spooky. all the herobrine mods for the older versions kinda pale in comparison to this, and i was bummed out when i realized i had to play current minecraft in order to play with this mod.

Well I don’t think the older versions (like the beta) have as much datapack and mod support sadly. The furthest back you could probably go is 1.7.10. You could try going further back but there’s less and less moding abilities I believe

@@hagangray8006 for 1.0-1.13.2, you can use legacy fabric, and for beta 1.7.3 you can use cursed fabric. No alpha fabric port, though. Keep in mind that this is just translating the libraries, there would still be a lot of things to change inside the code in order for the programmers at the From the Fog team to do, so they probably wouldn't try until they are mostly satisfied to the progress on the mod.

I love the mod/datapack a lot.. but i miss something... Anyone ever watched classic Minecraft KZbinrs? Rver heard of the Slenderman mod by Colossail for Minecraft back in 2013? That mod was scary tho.. It has not aged that well along with Slenderman himself but I can't get this thought out of my head that the Slenderman mod gave some sort of inspiration for all the new good Minecraft horror mod. If you jyst think about it.. All the new mods have at least one similar feature like.. Teleportation, Stalking, Scary, etc... Right? There has to be some sort of inspiration from that mod. I wish the Slenderman mod by Colossail was remastered or remade.. It was never finished and a whole bunch of classic KZbinrs made videos about it but weirdly enouth.. It quickly died down and everyone moved on from it but the fact that nobody seems to be talking about it anymore is weird but i do think people have the memory about the mod deep inside their head. They have not forgotten about it.. Its just deep within their heads. Nobody really has an answer on why the mod died so quickly or why the development of it stopped. It never reached a finish point.. I wish someone would bring back its legacy and remaster or remake it from scratch. After all it was one of the most "realistic" Slenderman mods in Minecraft.. The others simpily being a retextured enderman with some slenderman featured added to it. A remake of the mod would be fitting with Slender: The Arrivals 10 year anniversary that is currently happening.. Tho.. I don't think anyone will continue this mod' 10 year legacy.. but no one can be for sure.. Anyways i thought of just make a nostalgic comment and share some of my feelings to the community.. I had downloaded this mod, thinking i would play it and it would work as normal. I made multiple worlds with it installed, but they never worked. Finally I decided I didn’t care but was too lazy to install it. (I thought it wasnt working because the error message never apeared) BUT ONE DAY, I was playing my world and turned a corner and saw him, I got so scared. Then when I was like, “Oh, this actually works” I crafted a fireplace and looked out my window, jokingly thinking “omg guys he’s totally out my window” AND HE WAS. good mod, still recovering from the jumpscares.

Tbh I couldn't figure out for sure what shaderpack was on the video, but I can say Complementary Shaders have pixel-perfect/pixel-locked shadows so I'd recommend it anyways (comp best shaderpack :P)

They say it’s hard to make Minecraft scary, but man, set the render distance all the way down, remove the music and it gets REALLY unsettling. And if you lower the spawn rate of every mob it can make it scarier because of the conflicting feelings of being alone and knowing you aren’t alone
