There is something so sad about watching people who are long gone. That they existed for that time and did and thought and felt the same things we do but now they no longer exist. Perhaps some day you or I will also be on some 100 year-old footage on KZbin and people will be thinking the same - how fleeting it all is and how we all tried so hard and how we all shared the earth for a period but have all disappeared now and a new batch of humanity has taken over. And so it will go on.

I was lucky enough to see British Sea Power playing their soundtrack to this film at Latitude 2013. As a BSP fan, I thought it was the best thing they've ever done. As a writer, I was lost in inspiration and envy. As a grouchy, calloused northern bastard, I wept the whole way through. Live, this provokes an extraordinary reaction in the viewer. Full credit to the filmmakers who made something wonderful. But no one else can touch this band at their best. Extraordinary.

Eight years late, thankyou for this Pete. I was in that Film & Music tent with the same emotions. The most intense, gorgeously sad, beautiful combination. Utterly, utterly wonderful. Sometimes try to think if they knew quite what they'd achieved.

I like how many of them looked happy despite severe hardship. They looked right at he camera and smiled - like it was the biggest compliment you could pay them.

I know the soundtrack is just a reworking of existing songs but they are all amazing. Plus I'm getting to see them live again as they're supporting Editors on their UK tour. What a treat everyone is in for! :)

...I think people should learn to be a bit more selfish and go after the life they really want, and that means not succumbing to the pressure of marriage and children of they feel it's not for them Make sure you try to remain as free as possible by being comfortable with your own solitude - there is a lot of meaning to be found in time spent alone, quietly contemplating things and your place in the universe. We are really so insignificant, smaller than a grain of sand. Do what you want/love.

And when you have moments when you see some sort of meaning but you cannot define it (such as when listening to a beautiful piece of music like this), cling to it and keep searching for those similar moments of clarity. I don't know where those moments come from but they seem to say that there is this incredible force in the universe that becomes apparent when our minds are distracted from all the nonsense of life and we see or hear or create something beautiful. Don't accept mediocrity...

And now it's gone from BBC iPlayer. What a shame as it was one of the most interesting and evocative programmes I've seen since... well, I don't think I've seen anything like it actually. Unique and emotional, with a perfect soundtrack. Why do the Beeb keep all their games-shows on their demand service, but the shows we'd actually like to return to get removed?

My guess would be that the BFI footage was only licensed for a set length of time which is now expired and therefore had to take it down.

I don’t think Mogg can recover what’s lost. I’m talking about a time before the dawn of film and photography, when we only had mirrors that reflected back our image.

I don't know. I don't think life has any specific meaning. I think people make the mistake of thinking meaning is going to come to them but if you are going to get any meaning from life, you have to search for it yourself. I think finding one or more thing that you really love and perfecting that is one way of giving your life meaning. I also think people should think more about the 'rules' that have been drummed into us since birth about the 'proper' way to live...
