Brownells Gun Tech™ Keith Ford raises heck with the order of the universe by showing us his very new Springfield Armory Hellion™, rather than the classic Winchester or Remington or ancient rarity we expect from him. Introduced in January 2022 and based on the HS Produkt VHS-2 assault rifle in service with the Croatian army, the semi-auto Hellion is a short-stroke, gas piston operated, bullpup rifle chambered in 5.56 NATO. There's a full-length Picatinny top rail that hovers above the ambidextrous charging handle like a suspension bridge. The rail has built-in flip-up "iron" sights (diopter rear), the 16" barrel has an adjustable gas block, and the stock's length-of-pull adjusts, too. Not only is the safety selector ambi, but the Hellion can easily be set to eject the empties to the right or the left. Keith field-strips the Hellion and opens the hood to show us what's going on inside. The recoil spring resides inside the stock, and the very long but balanced bolt-carrier group is similar to the Ultimax 100 machine gun used by the Croation army. As Keith explains, the Hellion's recoil impulse is very different from an AR-15's. It uses standard AR-15 / M16 / M4 GI-style magazines. (Conversion to H&K G36 magazines is easy and fast.)
