Tom cruise's main reason to turn down the role is because people told him superhero movie wont sell anymore. The second reason is he played a lot of tony stack style of character and he got bored, third is he thought the iron man suit was too bulky and asked that the suit to be smaller (because he want to do and coordinating his own stunt as an iron man). Of course the producer didnt agree because they already decided that the iron man will be a cgi character. Last but not least is the resurrection of mission impossible franchise that requires his full commitment.

He isn't the best actor for sure but is a good guy. What made cage was Disney's National Treasure which he was perfect for in that role. He's not a universal actor like many others. Cage has to "get into the mood" first before he acts. He can't walk onto a set and just act. If you ever been around him you will notice he has to get in front of a mirror and scream or yell first.
