Ripping straight grain fabrics, or pulling a thread and cutting the gap, is actually the best way to make sure your fabric grain is straight! Cutting often goes across the grain and gives one a more crooked or rough looking edge.

Pulling out threads is also a way to decorate the edges of a fabric. You pull out not just one, but several threads. And then, using embroidery thread, you can bunch several of the ones crossing the gap by stitching them together, little loops of embroidery thread creating the bunches. I have no idea what that’s called, but I remember my mother decorating the hem around a tablecloth in this manner. Your dress is beautiful, and so is the cardigan. Both suit you so well! It warms my heart to see you so happy. I needed that, after a stressful day at work and an evening sitting with her friend at the hospital, where her mother is in the process of passing away from cancer. I needed that radiant,beautiful smile of yours and I didn’t know I did until I saw it. THANK YOU!

What you cut off the hem bottom might be usable to make tube straps.

Pulling threads and stitching the remainders to make lace edging from the cloth is called "whitework" or "drawn thread embroidery". And it is utterly gorgeous when paired with cutwork.

I am in awe of the way you plan out matching stripes -- sleeves to the bodice. I learned how to knit when I was 5 years old (I'm 78) and have knitted scores of sweaters, socks, hats, gloves, mittens...you name it. I once taught knitting, but apart from mastering double points, intarsia, and magic loop, I would never attempt matching stripes on a knit. You are a true artist.
@annetteavery33498 күн бұрын
I am so glad you explained the difference between warp and weft and why one is always easier to rip than the other. Not too many people know that and a lot of people would nerve rip down fabric but it’s the best way to get a really straight edge. Love your hand dyed, hand spun, hand knit cardigan and hand made dress, lovely and so you ❤ P.S. that sewing machine find is exquisite, love it

With you on the sleeves. Mismatched sleeves and offcentre plaids, as it turns out, irritate me. I suspect if I made socks I'd feel the same about them. Doesn't have to be perfect, close is god enough, but I discovered with one of my first plaid mishaps that I'm going to regret not moving that pattern over an inch FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY. I desire symmetry, dangit. I love that cardigan. Especially how the spring easter colours wound up so autumn! I get how you'd be worried, I can't really do pastels, they make me look ill... where fall colours are a bit more saturated and work better for me, but I did discover that if I have something dark between my face and a pastel, it can work... And I think you could have changed the tone of the cardigan if you'd used a different colour for the band, the brown definitely makes it lean towards autumn, but something lighter and more springy would definitely lean it to more easter... and something like a darker green could cause it to be summery... And I suppose you could have continued the band around the bottom if you hadn't had quite enough length, and added cuffs if the sleeves were too short... Almost makes me want to learn to knit. But I have plans to try crocheting something as soon as it's cool enough that I want to be draped in warm fuzzy things. It's coming, I ALMOST want to be wearing socks right now. Almost. By the time we're below 50F at night I should be wanting socks again. I got some cotton with the pre-shirring, and made a dress out of it that was really cute, but it turns out I can't stand the feeling of it on my skin, so I took off the straps and now I bunch the shirring around my waist where my skin is protected by my shirt and underwear. I just played the linen plucking game yesterday, thanks for explaining the warp vs weft, now I know why sometimes stuff rips and sometimes it doesn't. I'm making a medieval liripipe hood for a medieval festival next weekend that I'm participating in an armoured fighting demonstration, I've been looking for something to put on my head that doesn't look absurd, then discovered that if you roll up a hood and put it on upside down, it's absurd BUT PERIOD! What a lovely find, with the manual and everything!! I've unintentially started collecting sewing machines, I'm up to 6 now but might end up with a 7th at Xmas if I rescue one 50's Singer from the in-laws' garage. I think it needs a new motor. Gonna research whether it's worth fixing or not, but it'll be a third machine with sentimental value in my herd... (the first one is the hand crank that was mom's best friend's mother's, the second was from a friend who passed away, this Singer was husband's grandmother's main machine as a seamstress). Oooh, walnuts. I need to remember to grab a bucket of black walnuts from my mom's place, though I feel like I'm going to want to combine it with onion skins to get a rich warm brown, in my experience walnuts give a greyinsh cool toned brown.
