Jason Becker is the greatest guitarist in my opinion. He was so gifted both technically and musically. He made shred and sweeping sound beautiful.

One of my favorite guitarists, Luca Turilli, used to use a lot of sweepping. He's another neoclassical guy, yes, and the sweeps aren't even the best part of his solos, but they're so well put, in my opinion...

Great video, really fun trip back through the years. Surprised you didn’t mention Alex Skolnick’s work with in early Testament or Michael Angelo Batio. Mike’s work post Nitro on No Boundries has quite a bit of sweeping. All in all this was great, excellent work!

Dein Englisch verbessert sich echt schnell. Geil wie schnell du lernen kannst. Thanks for this good vid. Opened my mind . Especially the bit about Django. you know he had 3 fingers, right? And the Megadeth Yngwie reveal. amazing!!! Jason is Awesome!!! Poor dude. Worst fate I could imagine. To go to the top and then lose motor skills. I hope he can play guitar in dreamtime. I have started to sweep with thick picks like 4 mm - 8mm. I still need to get used to it, and find a hard glossy material. But feels good. How do you feel about thick picks for sweeping, Justin?

FYI on Yngwie's offical youtube channel he has a video titled "Yngwie Malmsteen 18 years old". This would be from 1981 prior to coming to America and the last thing he plays in that video is the 2 string arpeggio sequence when ended up in Rising Force. I know you are just goofing around, I just found it interesting. Also on the Powerhouse Demo from 1978, which I think is the demo that made it to the United States and eventually Mike Varney, the first song "Voodoo Nights" is the basis for Rising Force. Quite a bit different but the main riff is there with a much more 70s rock feel.

This phrase from Leper Messiah Kirk plays using alternate picking. Look at any concert. He can't use this technique even on 3-string arpeggios
@jsl21
@jsl21 Жыл бұрын
Can sweep picking be on just 2 strings? If an arpeggio is a broken chord, and a chord is 3 or more notes played simultaneously, wouldn't the minimum number of strings to sweep be 3? I've always thought of it that way. Also, if economy picking refers to continuing in the same direction with your pickstroke as you transition from one string to the next, when does economy picking become sweep picking? Ultimately I guess it doesn't matter as long as it sounds cool, but interesting to talk about and analyse. Thanks Justin

On paper you are right, but you forget, that you can have two notes on a string :D In Yngwies example he has two notes on the E string and one on the B = 3 notes = arpeggio 🎉🤗🥳🥳

@@justin.hombach HOW could you.....SKIP OVER two huge influences on sweeping? There's a couple vids of RITCHIE BLACKMORE on YT where he's doing FULL-sweep picking......in 1969! (ALL 6 strings. It's total sweep picking!) Ditto JAN AKKERMAN of FOCUS. (Watch the 1974 (?) LIVE clip of them doing "HOCUS POCUS" and you will see Akkerman do some vicious sweeps!)

Bro awesome vid! I have a question/poll/discussion for any shredders in the comments that is semi related to what was said at 16:00 about if that lick is sweep picking or alternate picking and how "it's so much harder when it's alternate picking": In watching other players, do you guys notice if they're using the neck or bridge pickup when sweeping? It's obviously harder to get a super clean sound on the bridge pickup, so do you, I don't know how to phrase it, "give more respect" to players when they're using the bridge pickup in cases like this? This is supposed to be a stupid and fun question, not some dick measuring contest =P I don't think anyone really gives a shit because it's not some competition, but I'm interested in hearing opinions from other technical players that are definitely following this channel and lurking these comments. For Children of Bodom, Alexi's guitar only has the bridge pickup, so all of his sweeps are done using the bridge pickup. I had already learned sweeping pretty decently by the time I got into them and I was inspired by the extra difficulty of this. Since then I've pretty much always practiced using my bridge pickup (also I like the sound better). If it's a tough section, when playing live I use the neck pickup and instantly get it like 15% cleaner. A bit like running with ankle weights, take them off and you'll run faster automatically.

Bit of a semantics nitpick, but we might as well be precise. For people who can't grasp the concept and mecahanics of sweeping right away, it's all right for them to focus on doing rest strokes for a while, AND THEN transition to following through without resting. But we shouldn't define or explain sweep picking in terms of rest stokes. You come to a STOP with rest strokes. Hence REST strokes. Whole point of sweeping is to NOT stop but keep going. I get what you mean (because I already know how to sweep pick), but I would respectfully suggest that is not the optimal way to explain what sweep picking is.
