In Fly High Jiu captured a little spider in a jar. Yoohyeon, having been taken over by her dark side because of the groups activities as a coven, burned the spider with a magnifying glass. This cruel act angered the guardian spirit of spiders who cursed the girls to lose their lives, but remain on Earth as spirits of nightmare, tasked with bringing bad dreams to mortals. Chase Me finds the girls still in their school which has become a hotel. The ghost hunter is called in to investigate and he tries to catch them using spells from a book he found in the locked room. You saw what happened to him in Good Night. In You and I the girls, having escaped the hotel, are doing something with photography while trying to perform an exorcism on Yoohyeon. She is the one who brought the curse on them and seems to be possessed by the spider queen. The exorcism succeeds but the spider queen appears in the form of a middle aged woman and possesses her again. Once again they try to drive out the spider queen and retrieve Yoohyeon's spirit which is trapped in a cold white dimension. They fail and the episode ends there. 'What' finds the girls trapped in individual nightmares while Jiu desperately tries to find Yoohyeon. She sees her but can't reach her. The song ends there. In Piri, they're still trapped in individual nightmares, but one by one they are collected and at the end they are reunited but still lost in darkness. Breaking Out starts with them in the dreamworld, close together but still separated by the red threads of Fate. They finally manage to reach each other, Yoohyeon's split self comes together and she is whole again. They've beaten the curse and can now ascend to the Afterlife to await rebirth into new lives as per Korean beliefs in reincarnation.

"Fly High" is probably the poppiest of the Nightmare arc. It was not done by their usual production team as well. But it makes sense, since this is a prequel, so bringing in a bit of the Minx sound makes sense to me. There are really heavy parts in it as well, which clearly state that they are not Minx anymore. And I love the dark parts thrown in, they really make the song special. The light part sung by SuA after the metal break is in major, while the rest of the song is in minor. That is why it stands out so much. They did the same in Good Night, but a lot shorter. About the MV: You can see Yoohyeon burning the spider, which brought the curse of the spider queen down on the members. You will see the spider queen again in You and I. In Native American mythology, spiders are considered protectors, that is why a Dreamcatcher resembles a spider's net. That is a brilliant connection to their name! 😊 In "You and I" you can see the spider queen coming for Yoohyeon. She is the old woman that is being photographed - only to rob Yoohyeon's spirit. Also, earlier we see Dongie being pinned to the wall by needles, what is usually done to insects. For me, Yoohyeon's spirit is being pulled out here and thrown into the white dimension, which we will see again in Piri. The spider queen takes over her body, which is why we see JiU try to free Yoohyeon (without success) and grab her neck in the end. I highly recommend to check out the dance practice as well, because Dami does something very special that didn't make it into the MV. "What" is still in my top 3 favorite title tracks. It's heavy for a Korean release and I love the syncopation in the second half of the chorus. Story-wise this is the first time they wear non-uniform outfits, which I believe is because they lost Yoohyeon (or at least her spirit) and are kind of broken. You can also see them search for her alone, not as a group. For me this is a song about the loss of a loved one and what that does to a group or family. I might be reaching, but this is the meaning for me. Breaking out is considered to be an alternative ending to the Nightmare arc, because the girls are not only together, but Yoohyeon is complete again (there is a scene where two Yoohyeons turn into one). Of their Japanese releases, this is the least heavy in my book (which is not a bad thing). Also, JiU really lets her hair down here. 😉

Wow, wasn't expecting you to drop all of them at one time, that's great! Alright, quick synopsis of the Nightmare story. There's no official version so everything is fan speculation based on what's in the MVs and songs so take this with a grain of salt. There are lots of interpretations which makes things fun, art is subjective after all. Keep in mind this is a very condensed version of the MVs. Fly High shows the events that cause the girls to be cursed. Jiu finds a spider and brings it into the house, which is innocent enough, but Yoohyeon leads Jiu away and then kills the spider by burning it with a magnifying glass. This one event seems to start the initial curse and all of the members start getting taken over by darker versions of themselves, turning into Nightmares. At the end of the MV, Jiu runs out and closes the gate to the property locking them inside with the curse, preventing themselves or it from escaping. Chase Me takes place close to 100 years later (I believe, based on information that I've seen outside the MVs) and by this time the building has been transformed into a hotel. The hunters show up looking for them, as he has a photo of the original photo of them from the end of Fly High. During the MV they play tricks on him and "haunt" him but he's able to find a way into their looked room and get his hands on the original photo. This gives him the ability to catch them. Good Night takes place immediately following Chase Me. He's managed to catch 2 of the members while the other 5 are still free. Two, Yoohyeon & Siyeon are being chased in the woods, while Jiu, Handong, and Dami are looking for a way to deal with the hunters and free Sua and Gahyeon who were captured. The girls cast a spell which allows them to reach through the mirror and take the hunters spell book, allowing them to free the trapped members and lock the hunter away in the mirror world. The events in Chase Me and Good Night provided a way for the girls to escape the building and they are now free. In You & I they are living on their own and it looks like they're running some photo service out of their house and maybe using those photos to place spells on people. An older lady shows up to get her picture taken and Yoohyeon goes to help her. She ends up being the Spider queen, there to take revenge on Yoohyeon for the actions she took in Fly High. The rest of the MV shows the other members working to try and save Yoohyeon. They're able to keep her from dying but all end up trapped in the Nightmare realm which is signified as the white realm. What is the first MV that takes place entirely in the Nightmare. All the girls are there now but they're all separated and looking for each other, and they're all stuck in repeating nightmares. The song's lyrics here point to them wanting someone to wake them up, but they just keep waking up, back in the dream. At the end Jiu is able to see Yoohyeon in the distance but can't reach her. Piri starts with Yoohyeon looking for the other members and the entire MV is her the girls running into various manifestations of their fears and running away from them. They don't face them, so they are unable to break free. By the end of the MV, Yoohyeon has found everyone and gathered them together, but they're still trapped in the Nightmare. Breaking Out, I think, takes place right after Piri. The girls are together but are still trapped by their fate (the red strings of fate around them). In this MV you'll see several scenes of the girls facing and overcoming their fears which allows them to come together and by the end, say goodbye to the Nightmare. I've seen others mention Curse of the Spider, and while it's definitely related as it mentions things form the Nightmare Storyline, I'm not quite sure how it fits in with the story. To me, it feels like more of an acknowledgement to the events in the storyline than a continuation of it. Also, as there's no MV you're left with just interpreting the lyrics. The original song was released on the Raid of Dream album with the title track Deja Vu (which I mention below), however, they just released a new version of this song with some concert footage from their 7th anniversary concert in Seoul this January. The new version is MUCH heavier than the original and really leans into the heavy rock/metal aspects of their discography. Since you asked about a few of the members I'll list them and their positions and what they were wearing/hair color in What as this is the MV that's easiest to tell them apart. I'll use the first scene in the white room as reference. - Members - Jiu - Leader, lead vocal, lead dancer, visual - In What she has the strawberry blond/red hair with the white mesh top. She stands up as everyone else is squatting down in the first formation. Sua - Main dancer, lead rapper, vocalist - In What she is the person in the very front of the first formation with the top that's split between white and black. Siyeon - Main vocalist - she is on the far left in the first formation wearing the black top with the white skirt. Handong - Vocalist - She has the bright orange hair. Yoohyeon - Lead Vocalist - She has the silver hair with the dress that's read and dark blue split down the middle. Dami - Main rapper - short lighter brown colored hair Gahyeon - lead rapper, vocalist - black dress with red sleeves in starting formation. They definitely have some witchy stuff going on in their MVs. The light stick for the group is a sorcerer's staff and there's an official robe you can get that looks like the robes they were wearing at the end of Good Night. We're definitely not a cult though... The next song that was released by the group is called Deja Vu and is a collaboration with a mobile game. This can be a bit of a pallet cleanser as it's going to be pretty different from what you've seen/heard from them so far. I will say that Deja Vu is considered by many to be their best song and it is without a doubt fantastic. After that is the Dystopia Trilogy, which is a social commentary on social media, online bullying, & hate speech. The instrumentation in this trilogy is going to introduce a lot more electronic elements but it keeps that core Dreamcatcher sound. Looking forward to the rest of your journey with them.

dreamcatcher \:D/ I won't go over the visual plot since others probably have in great detail and since there's multiple ways to interpret the story. instead I'll go over the theme since it's recurring throughout their discography. part of dreamcatcher's name is to 'catch' your 'dreams' so a lot of their songs are inspirational. before they were dreamcatcher, 5 of the 7 members were part of another group that did stereotypical cutesy bubblegum kpop. since they are from a small company with limited budget, they couldn't really stand out and compete. in short, they failed and had this been any other group from any other kpop company, it would have been the end but their company ceo did what was unthinkable in the world of kpop - give failure a second chance. dreamcatcher would be their second chance to catch their dreams as singers. this time around, they wouldn't do what kpop expected from a girl group but rather go their own way and succeed or fail on their own terms. since their ceo had experience in the jpop industry and their main vocal was actually part of a school rock band in her teen years, this probably led them to do rock/metal in a country that doesn't like rock/metal. so the 'nightmare' the series is referring to is being stuck in a bad real life situation, like when they thought their failure would be the end of their careers. it's about not giving up but more importantly maintaining your identity. that's why there are so many mirrors and duplicates of themselves throughout the series as they are trying to battle their inner demons. if you read the lyrics to chase me with this in mind, it should make more sense as it's saying it's ok to be yourself, be a trend setter and make people chase you. there is another song 'endless night' which recaps this theme with more straightforward lyrics so maybe you want to check that out too.

Now you have the choice of going back and checking out the albums that the title tracks came from. Many of their B-sides have videos and they have a wide variety of musical styles. The other choice is to continue with Dreamcatcher's title tracks up to the present. The order is Deja Vu, Scream, Boca, Odd eye, BEcause, Maison, Vision, Bon Voyage, and OOTD. Those title tracks also have albums so there is a lot of content plus numerous covers and other types of special videos. The girl you like is Dami, their main rapper.
