about the Miiverse support thing: in the files of botw, Tarrey town is referred to as “UMii village.” UMiis are basically nintendo taking the mii format and using it to generate a bunch of botw npcs. It’s 110% just speculation, but perhaps it could’ve been used for Miiverse support and posts at one point due to its name?

Nintendo obviously had a lot of faith in the Wii U and it’s social media system, which is why they pushed it in so many of their games. But because the Wii U was such a flop, Miiverse got discontinued prematurely and subsequently in it’s place were some half-assed attempts to recapture the same idea in games like Super Mario Maker 2 and the Splatoon sequels. People often make fun of the Wii U and Miiverse, but Miiverse genuinely added a huge community aspect to several games!

I have a crackpot theory that originally the "play by yourself" feature was about companions. Botw had companion mechanics, but they were only really used for the wolf link amiibo and a couple of the divine beast quests. It would take until totk to later reintroduce the concept with the spirit stone ghosts and the monster clearing quests. I feel like they originally wanted botw to be filled with npcs to help you out, both companions and otherwise, but for one reason or another couldn't get the tech to work properly. This would then go onto explain why the older marketing material features a lot more evidence of human settlement in the background, and also why with later material you see a harder pivot to the "wild" concept as the game's central pillar.

Your journey with Zelda is very much like mine. I too was feeling the depression and hopelessness of being a WiiU owner around Spring 2016. It was the first Nintendo console I was going to skip at launch and I was starting to regret buying one(after had owned it for 4 years lol). I instead moved back to my PC and played there for a while. Back to BoTW, I've always picked up Zelda games, played them for a few hours then put them down. BoTW was the first to truly suck me in and got me to actually sit down and play it through to completion. The only other Zelda game I completed pre-BoTW was Twilight Princess. I enjoyed playing BoTW so much that I put off beating Ganon over a year until sometime in 2019 because I just didn't want the game to be over. After BoTW, I've gone back and started playing through all of the mainline Zelda games start to finish in chronological order. It's been a very rewarding experience! I'm ashamed I've waiting this long to completely immerse myself in the series.

I think the “you don’t have to play by yourself” concept clearly became the Sages in tears of the kingdom, where instead of getting a power up for completing a dungeon your essentially getting a side character that will play alongside you, so technically your experience isn’t single player your part of a party of characters. I can imagine that in a early concept for BOTW the champions of the divine beasts were more like the TOTK sages, hence why they cited “play by yourself” in that original WiiU direct as a convention that they’re challenging. But the plans changed, probably as the game evolved to have a sense of loneliness and abandonment, but it also could’ve been technical reasons. And the Champions were scaled back to standard power ups

There are these gimmick puzzles in BotW that force you to use motion controls. These are some of the last remaining bits that utilize the GamePad's unique features left over in the game, and I just find that so interesting! Like, BotW was supposed to better showcase what the Wii U GamePad could do before they fully removed most features. Man, like, the Wii U just makes me sad! Like, it had such a cool Swiss army knife of a controller, and they were too scared to take many risks with it because people weren't buying their games and people were ridiculing games like StarFox Zero. But for every StarFox Zero, there was a Super Mario Maker, a game that uses the GamePad in an ingenious way! Splatoon is still best played on Wii U! Surprised the vid didn't cover more of the speculation and rumor side of things, because there was some wild (hah) stuff. Like the theories that the game would directly take story inspiration from Princess Mononoke. And how Link would be a freaking fugitive. But glad the vid brought up the girl Link rumor, because that was a BIG one. Some people literally thought Link in that initial teaser was a girl lol. Wow I really needed to see this, for someone who stopped playing games that weren’t sports titles since 2008 and Nintendo specifically since 2000. I just got my switch last year (enjoying the F out of it) but I was confused why everybody was so hyped about it in the switch I assumed it had been out on the Wii U. I’m like is it the change of scenery? But wow I get it now l, nice it’s technically a switch game that’s wassup

BOTW released on both the Switch and the Wii U on the same day where I live. On that day, I went to Game Planet to see the game. I knew I couldn't buy it because it'd be $60 and I'd still need a Switch to play it. Funny enough, I believe because of the Switch's release, Game Planet was having a 50% sale on Wii U games to get rid of their stock, INCLUDING BOTW. Best $30 I've ever spent on a brand new game that had just released.

As someone who had played both Breath of the Wild and Tear of the Kingdom, when I go back to Breath of the Wild after playing Tear of the Kingdom, the world oddly feels empty It might be because Breath of the Wild are missing caves and the wells we can go inside of Also another improvement in Tear of the Kingdom having Quest Menu right next to the map and not in the inventory.

i played my GF's wiiu and loved it, i though it was great. then the switch came out and all my friends were saying how good it was, but i just saw all the games were just ports. so in spite of the switch i purchased a wiiu. i got breath of the wild for wiiu. its great. runs well. i also thought it would be like the gamecube twilight princess and be the more collectible version. but i got all the other zeldas and other games CHEAP as the console was on the way out and everything was priced to go. i also feel that the map system (dual screen) was removed from the wiiu version soley due to the fact that i may have made it the superior version. so they just made it parity with switch. it took me well into the OLED switch before i got a switch. all the games were just ports, and is still half true to this day.

As a Wii U owner from day one back in November 2012, I'm kind of sad that the Wii U has sort of been pillaged of its exclusive games over the years. What I don't understand is that people were non-stop shitting on the Wii U and its games before the Switch launched, and when those same games got ported to the Switch, suddenly they became masterpieces or must-haves (Super Mario 3D World is one example of this). Still, I think it was for the best because in the end far more people can play and enjoy theses games on Switch than if they were still Wii U exclusives.

I remember being with my brother and just being in awe at the trailer. I must have rewatched that thing hundreds of time. Getting shivers, emotion overcoming me almost to the point of crying. It was beautiful. Truly, what a time to be alive then. I remember checking on the internet and seeing people that were in E3 saying how good it felt seeing a game like BOTW after almost every other game in E3 was "shooty kill bravo to alpha team" stuff. The mfs at Nintendo did it. Almost everything worked to their favor that day. It was a sight to behold. Finally getting that game, finally getting the switch, the unboxing experience, everythign. Amazing. Popping that tiny little cartridge, smaller than a 3DS surprisingly at the time, with that tiny box similar to the PSP's. Seeing the opening, waking Link up, getting out of the shrine of Resurrection, noting how weird it is for Link to be able to freely jump, letting the cinematic play with that piano piece. It was...wow

I feel like if Nintendo has learned anything, its that Zelda at the launch of a console is an absolute winner. Wii and Switch went hard with their cross platform releases. I don't know if they'll have anything for next gen, but 4k support will at least be nice.

I remember wanting a Wii U specifically for Zelda Wii U (as it was known at the time). There was a Sears ad that was misprinted for $20 3DS's and $40 Wii U's. Me and a buddy of mine drove to Walmarts all over trying to price match and finally we were able to each get one for $40. I waited... and waited... and waited... and then it was announced to also be on the Switch. All that to say I have never played Breath of the Wild on Wii U... the entire reason I bought the console. I think the only other game I really got a lot of play time on it was a TON of Smash. Still, it's a little sad the game I bought it for was never actually played on it. At least it was only $40 lol

I’ve completed Breath of the wild on Wii U. I just loved being able to see the game world on TV and equipment on tablet screen. Wii U tablet is most underrated and underutilised console feature. This is my favourite last generation console with so many great games and most of them have been ported to Switch.

After also watching your ''Amiibo on Nintendo Switch'' video, you spoke about how the box art for BotW on Switch put the notification of amiibo support on the back of the box instead of the front of the box. Lo and behold the same exact game released for the Wii U has the amiibo icon on the FRONT of the box. You also discussed how Wolf Link unlocked Wolf Link as playing along Link. A not so small detail you overlooked in your earlier video is that Epona was locked behind not one, but two different amiibo.

One of the major things you forgot to talk about was that after the first trailer, many people thought Link would have been a girl. It must have been a mix of Linkle being made in Hyrule Warriors and the longer pony tail he had made him look more "feminine" that spawned this discussion. But yeah I remember many discussions about if Link was a girl in this game, or if you could maybe choose the gender in the upcoming game. I mean we didn't have much so we really had these few things to speculate and talk about

Hot take: there was a good chance that Tears of the Kingdom would've been the same situation, but for Switch 2
@Marry_Gaming__4 ай бұрын
I dont think that was ever a possibility, the reveal trailer for totk is basically identical to the opening in the final game, a lot of totk is lifted from botw, and with hindsight about Nintendo trying to keep the switch alive for as long as possible it wasn't even close to being the same situation most likely. I dont even think it should have even taken as long as it did, what we got was probably the worst case scenario in terms of dev time lol

If the Switch had failed, for sure. But there was no need this time around lol. Still hoping Switch 2 is fully backwards compatible, otherwise it won’t be an easy sell for me, at least on the initial years.

Nintendo didn't want to make it look like Switch was worse so can't have any Wii U exclusive features
@MrMoon-hy6pn4 ай бұрын
@@aneasteregg8171 Maybe that's part of it but I think it's a mixture of things. Like Nintendo learning that tying games to a clunky gimmick for the sake of it makes games less fun (cough star fox zero cough) for the most part. Hence removing the mini map and any other features from the game pad and putting them on the tv/monitor where your eyes are. Not to mention the game pad infamously sucked away resources from rendering and processing on the 3 souped up GameCubes glued together that was the WiiU. So yeah. I think the game's better for not even bothering.

Breath of the wild is truly a before and after of an era, maybe it is due the fact of being a release Switch title, but I remember it for what it was on the Wii U. Felt like a send off to the console, like a broken curse and into greater things. I remember it feeling like such a breath of fresh air, it was indescribable, the exploration, the gameplay, everything was perfect. I also vividly remember talking about it with my cousin who was also playing, sharing details on different ways we were going. I thought that this is probably what people felt in the 80's with the original The Legend of Zelda, that sense of adventure. An amazing title, and maybe not so oddly, I like it better than Tears of the Kingdom. No doubt tears perfected a lot of aspects of BotW, but I feel like it didn't do anything really new or anything, (maybe because I actually played Nuts and bolts). But that's just me, I loved Breath of the wild.
