I love your enthusiasm! My husband and I have explored the US for almost 45 years now. We once picked up a native man and gave him a lift home. It was a severely hot day and he was out walking. He lived on the Res and ended up inviting us into his home! He was a decorated Korean War vet. It was a lovely visit. I enjoy the detail you give and the background you describe! My husband and I was homeless in 2014.. we got picked up in Grants by an Indian family. We rode in the back of the truck. It was mid September. Chilly out. They bought us dinner and took us to their home on the Rez. Let us sleep in their storage room with a heater and mattress and blankets. Fed is homemade food and treated us like long lost family... Then they drove us to the State line Truck stop where we showered and got some food before we walked into Arizona. We kept in touch with them throughout the years and in 2019 when I was traveling to Colorado from San Diego,I stopped in Gallup, got in touch with the family and was able to spend 2 days in their home which had built up since the last time I was there. Even though the storage we stayed in was the same. I speak with them a couple of times a year. So grateful for those folks. 🙏🏼🫶🏼

I rode a bicycle with two high school friends across the US and we spent a month in New Mexico and met great people, camped in amazing places and had zero problems, just the opposite, people treated us really well especially through the Navajo Nation.

Those clouds and the light are a good part of why so many artists flocked to Santa Fe, Taos, Truchas, etc. The western movies made in the 50's made use of that light and the clouds. You can usually tell if a movie of that time was shot in NM

A few months ago a student at hozho academy was shot while walking home and a week ago a dude was shot in the head in front of American bar. Most of the homeless have guns on them and my coworkers bf found a website on a terrorist cell operating there, most of them own the smoke shops there for their funding.

Born and raised New Mexican here, I really do think New Mexico gets a really bad rep and is more safe than most other states. The thing is my state has some of the nicest people and we will always be kind to those who come an visit the state. Our food and cultures are so unique that I strongly feel like more people should come and visit the state of New Mexico.

Memory in Gallup. Traveling with my elderly mother through NM. Stopped for gas. Mom being from Calif she walked out to the street to smoke. Windy and cold day. The women in the store at the service station were native american and ran out to get my mother and take her into the store - so she could smoke inside. Gave her coffee. They politely told me I was being very disrespectful for allowing my mother to stand out in the cold and wind . . .

Nice bro. I lived in Dallas before. Dallas is a trip but definitely a city. My sister lives there. I enjoyed living in like Pojoaque and around Santa Fe. I went up to Chama and Tierra Amarilla where a friend tends his sheep. Dulce nice. Dated around Farmington. Drove through Raton plenty. Soaked in hot waters outside Las Vegas next to World College. Bottom line is northern areas are cooler and better. The land will take care of you.

Snappy cold there in winter❄️! If you opt for Silver City route through Fence Lake and Reserve this is an interesting path 4 sure too

Cali is the place where you hit the beaches, mountains, lakes, with moderate warm to cool climate but can also enjoy the snow in the winter at Big Bear, Wrightwood, or Mammoth.

My family has lived in Gallup for decades and decades…. before the 1900’s! I love this place. My aunt and uncle own Earls!! My grandpa Godfrey welded all those fences around town with art. It was cool even seeing my Papa’s work in this video. He did all the fence art at the park you went to with the people and coal mining art. That was HIS stuff!! He just passed in July… it was warming seeing this at home in AZ. My great grandpa worked at the mines in Gallup for a very long time. If you’re there again, you need a burrito from AllSups! It sounds like to me that this video may have been recorded on the Friday we had his funeral in August. August 2nd at St. Francis… later went to 3rd Street Tavern :) My mom’s from the Northside, same with my grandparents and great grandparents. My Auntie Sally is the person who registered the El Rancho into the Historical places!

Stay away from the Flying J in Albuquerque if you are looking for a place to spend the night in an R.V. Some nut walked up and asked me to see my vehicle registration , and had his hand on a gun ! So I asked him who he was , I thought he was some kind of security guy. { he said I am your worst nightmare } . Some guy with Indiana Transport saw this and was videoing the whole time . What a nutcase !

My wife and I are Gallup NM natives, and we really enjoyed this video! It brought us up to date in some ways, since we haven't lived there in a long time. So much of what we took for granted, you marveled at, and made us a little chagrined at the things we didn't notice so much. You are very right, it is an artist's town in a state so filled with art and imagination. Thank you for this fresh look at a unique frontier town that still actually is a part of the western frontier. I do have to say that you massacred some names: Gamerco is pronounce "gah-MAYR-koh" - it stands for Gallup American Coal Company. We never heard Church Rock called Navajo Church -- it was always just Church Rock, like the town and the post office. And Canyon de Chelly - that is "Canyon dee SHAY" , and it's maybe my favorite place in the world. You might want to investigate it, perhaps part of a trip up to Monument Valley. It was a big piece of the history of the Long Walk you talked about -- Kit Carson was assigned to round up the Navajo people for the Long Walk, and he did it in part by corral a lot of them in the canyons where they farmed, and burned the fruit trees. He partially starved them out, after which they were driven on the walk to Bosque Redondo near Fort Sumner. Another place to visit -- Ft Sumner was where Billy the Kid died. a whole 'nother story. Thanks for your travelogue - it was like no other.

I would always stop in Gallup to spend the night at the El Rancho Hotel when I Iwould travel between Lubbock TX and Las Vegas,NV. It was the midway point between the two towns. Great seeing this place.

My folks lived in Lubbock ( I grew up and met my husband there) So I would go to visit my parents. My Dad passed in 2010. My brother and I took care of my mom until 2018 when she passed. After my mom passed I decided I needed my family. My oldest Daughter is here along with my granddaughter and grandson. I am living with them now. That's the story. Thanks for asking 😊 🙏 💪❤️

BNSF’s Southern Transcon runs through Gallup averaging 70 trains/day. Those trains are mostly double-stack shipping container cars and the train exceeds 10,000ft in length. Twenty years ago I counseled and listened to many train engineers who experienced the devastating event of running over someone on those tracks near Gallup! People drunk staggering down the track, passed out lying on the track, especially at night. A 120,000-ton train won't be stopping anytime soon, perhaps a mile or more down the track. I was an engineer too now retired.

@@DTD-no7wl I believe him. I live in Albuquerque and there was a time when drunks were taken to a holding cell to sleep it off. Now, on Friday and Saturday nights, especially around the first of the month, they are dropped off by the police at the ER. Ever try to take care of patients while herding drunks around the ER? Take the city bus any morning in Albuquerque and you will see people passed out on Central on sidewalks, in bushes, in front of businesses. Gallup is no different. Maybe not as many. I’ve been there twice in the last month and watched a guy steal clothes from Goodwill that someone had just dropped off while two people were passing a bottle nearby and another panhandling, all in the same immediate area. The guy who stole the clothes hid between my car and another to sort them out. Rough when you steal from a Goodwill! I appreciate the history, art and ability of different ethnicities to get along and all of the positives of Gallup but yes, there are drunks on the sidewalk. Pretty ignorant to call someone a liar for speaking the truth.

True, but that is better than here in L.A. Homeless encampments every which way you look. San Francisco is basically "hell on earth". I didn't see any homeless camps on the streets of Gallup in this video. Hmmm, I've driven many times through Gallup...never felt unsafe compared to Detroit, Baltimore, San Francisco, etc. Streets do look clean. Slightly run down but I guess that's the charm of their town. Mural paintings look undisturbed, I'm guessing the homeless take pride of their hometown artists. Here in L.A. those mural arts would be graffitied.

What a coincidence. I'm a german, currently roadtripping through Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. Now i am in Albuquerque (like it) and my next stop will be the Four Corners Monument at the Utah Border. Because i didnt want to drive through, i was looking for a town in between Albuquerque and my destination in Utah, and found Gallup yesterday. I checked if there are 1-2 decent hotel chains, and concluded, that it is OK to stay at for a night. Today i check my subscriptions, and you upload this video about Gallup!

If at Four Corners don't forget the Petrified Forest, it is close by. I am a Landsman who lives in Nevada, close to Las Vegas. Been here for fifty years, love it. One more thing. If time and money allows visit the Zuni Reservation, it is inside a larger reservation. Pick up Indian jewelry and pottery. But only at the Government sanctioned tradings posts. It may look nice but ,ost of the homeless there are armed with guns, in the winter there’s always someone freezing to death, most of the roads are pot hole ridden, but it’s got a few good food joints and downtown can be nice as long as the crazies aren’t out and about. Last year and the year before we had some dude run over a crowd while a art event was happening and someone shot their gun in the air while the parade was happening

I drove through Gallup in 1994 on payday. I had five seriously close calls with vehicles driving through this town at 10 in the morning. I thought that I was in the midst of a demolition derby! At that time I thought that practically the whole town was pickled.

@@FromHeretoThere I haven't been back to Gallop since 2010 but I would say no. Alcoholism among the native people has been a sad issue for over a century. I'm sure that the Navajo community has been working hard on eradicating the problem but addiction is impossible to eliminate without substituting something else worthwhile ... such as a strong cultural bonds, organized physical fitness, and health care support. The U.S. government hasn't been too helpful in dealing with this problem. It is not just an Indian problem, I have a white younger sister who has been an addict to heroin, alcohol, fentanyl and to other things since she was 13 and she now is 52 years old... how she hasn't killed herself is amazing to think about. Addicts in our country are 3rd class citizens in the sight of our society.

Alice Springs sometimes resembles a war zone... rioting Aboriginals smashing cars, shop windows, etc , to the point the hotel had to bolt its doors and barracade themselves and the terrified customers inside... you wont find any of that explained on the brochures ! Oh wow, that'd be a great place to visit! I'm in New England visiting family now but have a general route planned out for my route back West and will be hitting some interesting cities and towns on the way! I already plan to do a video in Stehekin (the largest town you can't drive to in the lower 48), but will definitely add Neah Bay to the list! 2009 A couple of buddies and myself drank ourselves cross country, we took the "Micky & Mallory Knox" route through New Mexico via Rt 666. Gallup was a cool town ,had a great time .Never once did I ever feel like this was a dangerous place.

In 2009, while traveling from Baltimore to Vegas, I stopped at the Dennys. A Navajo woman ran into the Dennys screaming call 9-1-1. I am a nurse, I ran to the parking lot to see how I could assist her. She had a 12 year old boy in the back seat of her car. His head had been run over. His scalp was torn from his forehead to the back of his head. I held his head together with my t-shirt. He told me his name was Walt and begged me not to let him die. He was alive when the ambulance loaded him. I went into the Dennys covered in blood. Washed the blood off in the bathroom. I had a premonition that I wasn't the first person to wash human blood off in that sink. Gallup is the epicenter of weird.

I lived in gallup nm for most of my youth and it was actually a solid city. New mexico is truly the land of common sense. If something feels off you simply follow your gut instinct. It's definitely better than farmington, las vegas nm, grants etc....The art is gorgeous and i love the humor and openness of the gallup people.

Gallup is a town of 20,000, but does the commerce of a city with the population more like 100,000, so that will skew the reported crime rate higher. Fentynal abuse has become a terrible problem. Most of the violent crime occurs amongst the drug abusers, and they do a lot of petty theft to feed their addiction.

I grew up in Zuni which is right next to Gallup. Its great unless you're out doing drugs and drinking all night which could be a problem no matter where you're at. Gallup is a friendly city. It has large city amenities with a small town atmosphere. You have your Walmarts, Applebee's, Home Depots etc but it feels slow paced until right after the first of the Month. Gallup has a huge Native American community outlying its city limits so when people get their money and food stamps at the beginning of the month they all migrate to Gallup to restock their homes, eat out and find entertainment. I wouldn't be surprised if the amount of people there exceeded 200k on some busy weekends. Gallup is an essential part of the US Southwest

Worked in Browning, Montana Blackfeet Indian Health Service with a native nurse who took vacations in Gallup because he could eat in restaurants, go to stores without being stared at and no hostility. Been in Gallup 24 years and love it here.

Gonna keep it real with you slime, as much as we love out of state money coming in, a lot of us hate to see people move here. Out of staters bring a culture that isn't from here and a lot of generational New Mexicans have a really hard time accepting that others are allowed to move in, and them trying to change things makes them more of a target. I've lived most of my life in the southwestern U.S., so much of what you are so ecstatic about is just another day of the week to me. I served two years in Santa Rosa, NM, in the late '50s, then a stretch in Farmington in the early '70s. You have presented a very positive view of what I considered, let's just say, a suboptimal state even 50 years ago. It's a pretty place, if you know where to look, and you've helped with that. I drove from Pennsylvania to California in 1966. I was 21 years old, still in college and dreaming about seeing California. On my way, I stopped in Gallup..in those days, Route 66 was still there. I still remember seeing Native Americans for the first time. All of my memories of Gallup are wonderful.

I rode a bicycle with two high school friends across the US and we spent a month in New Mexico and met great people, camped in amazing places and had zero problems, just the opposite, people treated us really well especially through the Navajo Nation. The night sky was so amazing, We never use tents. We slept under the stars every night. I will never forget the people one couple invited us back to their ranch about 5 miles off the highway. They fed us Navajo tacos for two days made us feel so welcome. I will never understand how New Mexico gets a bad reputation.

I felt unsafe in Gallup, not as much as in Oakland but still. I’m used to homeless people in LA but there was a violent one inside the Big 5, and there seemed to be a lot of homeless people along the street corners or just drunk people loitering. The worst thing we saw was a guy getting dragged by another at a gas station which ended up in the police being called there. Such a chaotic appearance of a city especially with us having only spent 30 mins there in total.

My grandfather worked for the railroad in Gallup I'm so proud to be a part of the Navajo nation. The stores are very expensive. You can deal with natives themselves in Santa Fe they will deal with you. Their work is beautiful.

I live in southern NM, but for about fifteen years before I retired I traveled the entire state with my work. I spent a lot of time in Gallup and the surrounding area. I used to go to Red Rock Park almost every time I was in Gallup to do some nature photography. I spent most of that time on or near the Church Rock Trail as I found those cliffs and that rock to be so incredibly beautiful. I also found almost all of the people in Gallup to be very friendly and easy going (of all races). I realize that most of the crime there is larceny and domestic abuse and crimes that almost all stem from drug and alcohol use. I never had one incident that was 'dangerous' in all the time I spent in Gallup, Zuni, Window Rock, Shiprock, and the Farmington area. This was a great in depth video presented with wonderful enthusiasm. I have subscribed.

I was born and raised in Gallup now living in Albuquerque. I still have a lot of my family that live in Gallup that have greatly contributed to Gallup and still do owning restaurant businesses like Grandpa's Grill ect. My Uncle Johnny Pena was the Major years ago and my Uncle Joe Pena the Treasure. Gallup was a great place growing up I loved it! Grew up across the street from the Gurleys. My father Augustine Martinez and mother Marlene Martinez owned Auggies Men Wear on Coal St. I grew up in a wonderful place where everyone knew everyone and still does. Gallup is known as a small town with a big heart and that is very true. From the rodeos to the ceremonial parades where I used to ride my horse Chico, were just great memories I will never forget. I wouldn't have wanted to grow up anywhere else! Gallup is my hometown and I am very proud to say that! Thank you for visiting my hometown and honoring the people that live there!
