Wow - what a blast from the past. I did my PhD at the National Magnet Lab in the 1980's - by then Ben Lax was retired and was no longer the director, but he was still around and he was on my thesis committee. It is wild to see him as a younger man. Francis Bitter had passed away by the time I got there - his picture was (and still is) hanging in the entryway to the building. But I had never seen video of him speaking before. I never used the Bitter magnets myself, although I know of many others who did. All of my work was using superconducting magnets. I kind of remember Max as well - he would come by for reviews once in a while, but as a student I had no direct interaction with him. I had forgotten what he looked like. A couple of years after I graduated, the Magnet lab lost its funding from the NSF - a new facility was built in Florida. It was too expensive for MIT to operate the Bitter magnets without external funding, and I believe those are no longer in use.

Electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) is a phenomenon observed in plasma physics, condensed matter physics, and accelerator physics. It happens when the frequency of incident radiation coincides with the natural frequency of rotation of electrons in magnetic fields. A free electron in a static and uniform magnetic field will move in a circle due to the Lorentz force. The circular motion may be superimposed with a uniform axial motion, resulting in a helix, or with a uniform motion perpendicular to the field (e.g., in the presence of an electrical or gravitational field) resulting in a cycloid.

Kind of wondering about MIT's current competency level. The video itself states 1951. They title it on youtube as (1961). I guess engineers cared more about things being correct in the 50's or in the 60's.
