What country is this?

There is a special tool for removing and also replacing this seal, otherwise the inner seal warps and bends on install.

Hey I’ve tried your method but it seems I can’t do it right I’ve looked in the Jetta repair manual and they used a strap wrench would it work to hold the crankshaft pulley in place

You could try it. Alternatively, you may have to make a tool using some flat stock. (A bar that would bolt into at least 2 bolts on the crank pully).

It's a standard thread (counter-clockwise to remove). I've never measured the force to remove. Holding the engine in place while you apply force is the hardest part. I usually just keep hammering on it with a large impact gun.

My timing belt kit came with all the bolts and everything I needed and I did it over the span of a couple weeks because i work a lot. Long story short the kit came with longer harmonic balancer pulley bolts than what was original and I didn't notice. I put the new ones in and torqued them to spec and tried turning the motor by hand and it was locked in place. Did a little research and realized it was the bolts being too long. Put the originals in and finished the job. Once I started it however, a pool of oil formed under the car so I'm thinking those long bolts damaged the cover. Think I can just take the bolt off with the timing belt still on and replace the cover and seal without having to basically redo the timing belt job entirely?

Unfortunately, the time and skill required to lock everything in place while you check behind the crank gear is more difficult than re-timing the whole thing from scratch.

@tightwadtv3421 think the move would be to take off the vacuum pump, lock the cam and injection pump, remove motor mount, remove those 2 metal covers, loosen tension on the timing belt and slide it out of the way and hammer the crank bolt off with a big impact? I should be able to put the car in gear since it's a manual and that should keep the crank from spinning, yeah? I didn't wanna take the motor mount off because they're brand new stretch bolts and now I gotta order new ones again lol fml.

@@tightwadtv3421 finally got around to doing this and my largeboi milwaukee 1400ftlbs zipped that crank pulley off in less than 2 seconds. Caught a break on that one. The front main seal and flange were totally destroyed by the longer bolts. sucks.
