In the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, prolonged "mountain wind events" are fairly common during the late Autumn months through early Spring. These events can last for hours at a time, with sustained winds above 40 MPH and gusts topping 70 MPH! Forecasting for disruptive mountain wind can be achieved using 700 mb wind maps, which closely corresponds to 8,000 feet above sea level. Adding a few inches of freshly-fallen snow to the intense wind can create very treacherous travel conditions, as the blowing snow results in a "ground blizzard" phenomenon illustrated here.
