I missed the part numbers for the brake lines here. I used Protex brake lines, H1544 and H1163 - I also forgot to show you i put Copper Eze on the backs of the pads too where they touch the piston and caliper forks - this will reduce any brake squealing.

Cam, I'm halfway through binging all of these and I have to say, some of the best DIY content I've seen in a long while. Few people go through the effort of being this thorough (myself included) and you do a great job of making things entertaining and informative. Plus you're working on my favorite cars! I'm going to do a brake master rebuild on my RA28 after watching your video on it. Keep it up!

Thanks Guff, coming from someone with a channel like yours that really means a lot. These eps are with my earlier kit too so now I'm on a ZV-1 and a Rode lapel, and I've worked on my pacing etc to improve things further. Glad you're enjoying the Violet Crumbles series, if you look at my playlists you'll also see a quicker series I've started with an RA28 too (Roadkill Rescue series) and I sold my A90 and picked up an R34. Do you have any content on your RA28? I'd love to see it. Feel free to HMU at thebuildroom@outlook.com if you ever want to talk through any of the RA28 stuff. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the support.

Yeah he offered me a refund no questions asked, but i don't think he's updated the details of the listing yet so hopefully others don't make the same error as me. Lots of parts makers out of Thailand, is the classic car scene big there?

Awesome video! I appreciate the tips and tricks. I wish I could take you up on the grease hubs, but I’m stuck on troubleshooting the start-up on my 1974 Celica project. I am learning a ton from your videos; looking forward to future updates!

Stick with it - with old cars like these the basics of air, spark and fuel will get you going, and a can of Aerostart is your best friend ;) Good luck with it, hope you get it sorted.

Hey Cam, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! First off, I'll say it again, you are an excellent teacher. Second, you almost had me with the "ugga duggahs" on the torque, funny. Third, how do you not have more subscribers? Does no one have an interest in rebuilding cars anymore? Geez. Keep going Cam, your videos are excellent and I'm learning a lot. BTW, in America, we call them Cotter pins. Please don't change, you are awesome. Looking forward to seeing Violet Crumbles on the road again.

Hi Bob, thanks for watching 👍Hopefully the subscribers come - going to mix in some more eps of other cars so hopefully that will bring some in as the RA23 is a bit of a niche interest car nowadays - getting Violet Crumbles back on its wheels is definitely a priority though!

Hi cam The TA23s and the RA23s are the same shape but with different motors. The TA23s had the 1600 motor and RA23s 2000. So bigger brakes, hubs etc for the RA23 being a faster motor. Probably why there is different sizes in bearings dust caps etc.. Hope this helps and to all Celica fans.

Great video! Watching it i wonder, how do you know so well the dissasembly process? I get that some things are king of self explanatory the moment you see it and make sense, but others seem a little bit alien to me. Is it a vast knowledge from years of car working experience? A close relationship with the maintenance manual? Both? If I were to do something similar to my car, where should I start? Again thank you for this awesome content, happy new year!
@TheBuildRoom3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! In terms of my knowledge I've played around with cars like this for a while although I know nothing in comparison to some of the other guys out there. (I'm not a mechanic) If you're new to working on cars I'd recommend doing your research before taking things apart as things like the spring removal we did last week can be really dangerous if you don't understand the dangers. Buying a Haynes/Gregorys type repair book that suits your car is a great first step, and will warn you of the dangerous stuff or stuff you could damage as you go, then if there's anything in the manual that you don't understand or can't make out in the diagrams KZbin is the best bet for clarification so you can see things yourself. Other than that remember your safety gear and learn as you go! Best of luck, and don't forget half the fun is in the journey 👍👍👍

Hi, first of all thank you so much. Im in a little trouble, i took Celica to a brake shop and they forgot to put the shims pins and i loose the all 4. i cant findt it anywhere ebay, rockauto, nothiing. Im planing on doing with steel weld and grinding. i apreciate any suggestion. Thanks again. Cheers from Mexico.
@TheBuildRoom6 ай бұрын
Just the shim pins, not the shims themselves? You might be able to bend up some spring steel, or look for someone wrecking a car and get the pins off that, they're no worth much as stock callipers. Lots of cars in the US that people are breaking.

Love this series. Why not put the seal on the piston before putting it in the cylinder? Then seat the seal in the cylinder and install the SS retainer. Seemed like you could potentially scratch the piston the way you did it.
@TheBuildRoom3 жыл бұрын
Yeah i did try that - it may take a better man than me. Basically with the piston on the seal i just couldn't get enough access to get the seal to sit in the channel on the piston or get the stainless steel ring clip to seat on the seal correctly. There's probably a knack to it but i couldn't figure it 🤷 Thanks for watching!

Noob question: Is that a regular oven?
@TheBuildRoom3 жыл бұрын
Yep just a regular electric oven (not gas) but cooking paint in it means it will never see food again. The paint and powdercoat release dangerous gases when cooked that would get into any food - basically don't do this in your home oven, get a cheap or free one off gumtree/craigslist if you want to do this. 👍

Very unprofessional on the brake seal installation. Had it occured to you to install the seal to piston into its groove prior to installing it into the brake housing, seat the piston towards the bottom and then install the edge of that seal and then the ring retainer. I like the fact that your video attempts to train those who were not around during the virgin rebuilds of yester-year, but someone somewhere should have explained that assembly procedures by the numbers. That part was a fail, however the other assemblys rate a 90% plus. Note: I did check both factory manuals and the Haynes manual and the Clymers instructions are not clear on the installation of that seal assembly. Only Chiltons states to: 1. Coat all components with clean brake fluid. 2. install the seal and piston in the cylinder bore (as a assembly) after coating them with the rubber lubrication supplied in the rebuild kit. Seat the piston in the bore with your fingers. 3. Fit boot into the groove in the cylinder bore. 4. Install the caliper cylinder assembly. (Their words not mine!) Because of the factory manuals omission of that specific detal, you gain your lost points back..
@TheBuildRoom3 жыл бұрын
Well if you don't think the brake seal install was professional you're definitely not going to like some of the stuff in future episodes 🤣🤣🤣 I'm definitely not a mechanic, just a guy learning by doing. I did try the method you've outlined though, and i just couldn't get it. The piston really squashes up the rubber if its attached to the piston and i found it impossible to get it to seat cleanly in the recess and then stood no chance of getting the snap ring into it. Clearly needs a better man than I. I also found that the manual were pretty light on in terms of the method, so necessity was the mother of invention/hackery. The seals weren't damaged in any way and are seated perfectly though so it got the job done. Thanks for watching!
