Part One: • Front without flanks, ...
Based on the novel by Semyon Tsvigun "We will return." The beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Major Mlynsky, a former school teacher, behind enemy lines, gathers a special detachment from disparate military groups to actively counter the advancing fascists. Mlynsky manages to establish contact with the front headquarters, and through the local population - with the underground. And the squad begins combat operations.

Very good film. The suffering of the people under Nazi occupation and the determination of the people and the soldiers to defeat the Nazis is absolutely to be remembered.

La part que més m'ha agradat és el discurs de presentació que Mlynsky fa als seus soldats, directe, sense enganys i donant confiança als soldats que treballant junts, se'n sortiran. The part I liked the most is the presentation speech that Mlynsky gives to his soldiers, direct, without deception and giving confidence to the soldiers that working together, they will get away.

Note the presence of Vyatchesláv Tíchonov, (also played brilliantly in S.Bodartchuk's & N. Mikhalkov's films that won 2 Acad. Awards!), in the role of the commander major, guarantees the good quality.

Great Film! ..Even though they're Actors you can tell from them just what the Russian People and the Red Army had to go through to Defeat the Nazi's! You don't get war films as good as this anymore!

You can't count suffering by numbers! The U.K. declared war because Hitler attacked Poland. Hermann Goring told Hitler he couldn't attack England until the RAF was destroyed, we had Polish pilots to help with the battle of Britain and won. Hitler then broke the 10 year non aggression pact with Russia and was able break that because he had conquered Poland. Russia were not directly involved with helping the West. Ultimately, Canada, the USA and England landed on the beaches of Normandy, pushed East and split Berlin between them. Very unlikely that Russia would have joined the war had Hitler not attacked them, same with the USA but for attack by Japan on Pearl Harbour. Most wars are started by Dictators, and the human suffering continues today. We learn nothing do we? Just stand by and let it all happen.

@@mc9903 Stalin was an admirer of Hitler referring to him as 'Some Guy' after the 'Long Knives ' Incident and was perfectly Happy to let the Western powers Fight it out between them whilst maintaining his grip on the Eastern part of Poland ( it was said that even whilst Tanks were rolling across the frontiers of Russia Goods wagons of Produce were heading in the other direction to Germany courtesy of the Nazi Soviet Pact Wars are most often caused by Dictators But what does it also say of the Blair's ,Bushes and the rest of them too many to name here But we all know who they are! ..I would liken the Suffering in Gaza today as Akin to any number of Sieges or Battles apart from one thing ..its been going on since 1948!

It is well known, that a cohesive, effective unit behind enemy lines worth multiple of its strength compare to regular frontline units. This was specially true in the Soviet Union, which by its size made any intruder spread wide and thin.

Enjoyed both parts. Very effective at showing the tragedy and personal sacrifices everyone goes through in war. A sad footnote is to fast forward to current times, now it is the Ukrainians who are suffering.

We in the West fought the Nazi's , but didn't suffer anything like Russia & her people. I Hitler hadn't attacked Russia ,the war for us in Europe would have dragged on for years, could even have ended with Germany winning. I want god willing to visit some of these battle grounds & pay respect to those soldiers & civilians that gave their lives so we in the west are free ! Good film !

@@davidcolley7714It’s a historical fact that Stalin imprisoned tons of returning and repatriated Soviet POW’s into the Gulags. Stalin saw all soldiers who surrender as enemy of the people, he wouldn’t even exchange his own son who was in a German POW camp for a German general in Soviet custody. Also he believed that many were turned into spies while in German custody.

Very typical Soviet film-making, showing the suffering and the heroism of the ordinary Soviet people. We must not forget, though, that the Russians were fighting to free their Motherland but they themselves willingly invaded the Polish Motherland before they were forced to change sides. That must not be airbrushed from history.

The Soviet Union made a number of land-grabs during the 1930s, but Poland is a complicated case: Poland had opportunistically siezed a bunch of Ukrainian territory during the chaos of the Russian Revolution, and some would say that turnabout is fair play.

The Communists have not come up with anything new in politics - if you are beaten, either beat yourself or suffer... Poland chose suffering to make itself a victim, but immediately forgot its friendship with the German Nazis.. Of course, this applies to Polish leaders who have always dreamed of "a great Poland, from sea to sea.."and not simple and honest Poles. And as always, only Russia and the Communists are to blame. )))

Given the comments of one of the German generals of being within spitting distance of Moscow, we can conclude that this movie is set in autumn and winter of 1941. Lend-lease shipments during 1941 amounted to 360,778 tons, or 2.1% of the total tonnage shipped over the course of the war. Even if Major Mlinski's detachment hadn't been cut off in German-controlled territory, it's not particularly likely they'd have received any spam or Studebacker trucks during this period.
