Did America rush into a war in Iraq for which it was unprepared? In this 2003 documentary, FRONTLINE examines why the U.S. went to war in Iraq, what went wrong in the planning for the postwar occupation, and what was at stake for both the U.S. and for Iraqis.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/don....
In "Truth, War and Consequences," FRONTLINE producer and correspondent Martin Smith probes the fierce internal debate between the Pentagon and the State Department over the intelligence justifying the war and over the shape of post-Saddam Iraq.

Seeing soldiers gleefully cheer a tank rolling over a man's car for catching him looting some crap lumber was the perfect visual allegory to describe the whole war. I hope those soldiers have some remorse for their actions today. They should be ashamed, and embarrassed by their absent leadership who never clearly defined what their roles were in Baghdad.

After watching Frontline’s 4 part docu-series on the ‘08 economic collapse last weekend as the collapse of the Afghan government was happening live (2021), I think I might need a week or two before I can bare to watch this one. I was in middle school and high school when all this was going on so I didn’t fully comprehend the gravity of what was happening. Looking at these major historical moments from 1998-2012 as a full grown adult has ultimately made me feel disgusted and saddened. I cannot express enough how grateful I am that we have this type of journalism available to us. I hope and pray that we never repeat these mistakes. I truly want better for my children.

Unfortunately looking at Ukraine and the Middle East the neo con foreign policy approach that caused the invasion of Iraq seems very much alive in Washington today - this time with the very real potential of igniting a major war , even a world war.

People in key positions had no idea who they were dealing with, how to proceed with the people they were trying to keep safe??? and this isn't something only unique to Iraq, I dare you to go to any of our bases overseas and ask the locals, the students how the U.S. military personnel behave, we need more training for our joes, and those in charge need more resources and we need real leaders, not just a quick promotion to cause you happened to be there or can do push ups.

When I came home for lunch I saw the footage. I called the shop and took the rest of the day off. I was scared, confused, heartbroken and pissed. I wanted revenge for the attack then and there. I think that's normal. The people of Afghanistan weren't responsible, their failing government and Al-Qeada were to blame. We were there far too long and left the country to be easily overrun. For that, and the mission creep that kept us there, I blame W. Iraq is a completely different story. We should have never sent forces there and we suck at nation building. This film is so good, I hope that it is factored into multiple curricula in multiple fields and subjects, at multiple levels of education. The lessons that can be learned from American lawmakers' catastrophic conduct at every stage of this unbelievably flawed invasion are to deep to fathom. If humankind is indeed progressing then it needs to be ingrained in the consciousness of generations to come that lack of integrity on this scale can never be repeated. Though I'm not holding my breath that this will happen, I hope I'm wrong. Huge credit to you all for the quality of product that you all have given us here. My hat off to everyone involved. The current conflicts and crises in places such as Gaza and Yemen serve as a stark reminder that the atrocities of war are not just history but are tragically unfolding in front of our eyes. The devastating impact of these events cannot be overlooked, especially when we witness soldiers laughing while inflicting destruction and suffering upon innocent lives. It is deeply unsettling to witness such disregard for human suffering, and it undoubtedly fuels the resentment and aversion towards those responsible for the violence. The poignant reference to an Iraqi adult who was a child during the Iraq War serves as a poignant reminder of the long-lasting repercussions of conflict. The trauma and scars left by war continue to haunt individuals and communities for generations, and the visual evidence of soldiers callously causing harm only magnifies the pain and anguish experienced by those who have endured similar horrors. It is crucial for the international community to acknowledge and address these ongoing tragedies, and to work towards finding peaceful and humanitarian solutions. By bearing witness to these distressing events and recognizing the human cost of war, we can hopefully galvanize greater efforts towards promoting empathy, understanding, and lasting peace.

Great documentary! It evidences with proof beyond all reasonable doubt how individuals (eg. Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolforwitz, Richard Pearle , Richard Haas, Douglas Feith, John Bolton, etc) should be blamed , named, shamed, and held individually accountable, and not the country or its people. The country (eg. USA, Nigeria, Israel, etc.) is an abstract entity obviously for the good of the world, just as is the case with its citizenry or its population who have absolutely no interest in the destruction of other countries, as is he case with individuals like Dick Cheney, Richard Pearle, Donald Rumsfeld, Douglas Feith, Paul Wolforwitz, John Bolton, etc. whose sole motive and intent for such acts is their individual financial gains. We have not mentioned George W. Bush, Codoleezza Rice, because such tops of the given Administration are usually misled and used, as was the case with Colin Powell who was made to blatantly lie to make the case for that war at the UN, BUT HE LATER REGRETTED AND RESIGNED!

A gunner in my platoon had deployed in 06-07 and told me a story about when his unit had deployed back then they were shown that clip in Kuwait before they rolled up north into Iraq. It was meant to show what not to do when interacting with the Iraqi civilians but the whole unit(of tankers) watching the clip cheered and laughed. I thought it was funny at the time. Looking back on it now it was not funny at all. We invaded that country and terrorized them for years. Just a bunch of kids with big guns. I don't personally know anyone that was KIA in Iraq but I damn sure know many that have killed themselves. We were lied to and used and I hope my generation learns from this and Afghanistan. 0:05: 🔍 Investigation into the truth, war, and consequences of the Iraq war. 10:55: 📝 Ahmad Chalabi's role in the fall of Saddam Hussein and the influence of the special intelligence office in the lead-up to the Iraq War. 19:27: 🔍 The Future of Iraq Project aimed to plan for the post-Saddam era, but many Iraqis were unaware of the challenges ahead. Ahmad Chalabi and other INC Iraqis were skeptical of the project and wanted to focus on who would rule Iraq after the war. Kanan Makiya initially declined to participate, believing that Iraqis would know better how to handle post-war issues. Chalabi and the INC received support from the US government, but their relationship deteriorated in the mid-90s. Chalabi later lobbied for the passage of the Iraqi Liberation Act to make regime change official US policy. 27:05: 😔 The U.S. government's claims of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq were not supported by reliable evidence, and there were discrepancies between the intelligence and the administration's statements. 34:32: 📝 The INC proposed a detailed blueprint for a democratic state in Iraq, including the removal of Saddam's bureaucracy, but faced opposition from the State Department who wanted to prevent rushing into a power vacuum before other Iraqis had a chance to organize. 42:48: 😳 The Pentagon's plan for post-war Iraq did not include the work done on the Future of Iraq Project, and there was a lack of consensus on why this material was not used. 49:32: 🔍 Secretary Powell presents evidence of Iraq's weapons programs, while Chalabi's attempt to lead an uprising fails. 57:51: 🔒 The lack of authority and instructions from the US military led to looting and chaos in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime. 1:06:29: 😔 The aftermath of the Iraq war proves to be more complicated and costly than anticipated, with a policy of complete de-baathification leading to alienation and increased sabotage, and a delicate balance between military operations and civilian casualties. 1:16:54: 🇮🇶 Chalabi discusses the need for security and plans for Iraq after the US occupation. Morphine is needed for surgeries, for battle medics, for ambulances. Morphine is made with opium. It’s a little know fact but is absolutely true. 70% of the worlds opium lies in Afghanistan and Iraq. I distinctly remember my substitute teacher in elementary school asking the class to raise their hands if they were in favor of the invasion or against it. I was the only student who raised my hand against the war. I firmly believe the only reason she asked this question was because I am middle eastern, and she was curious of my response. I remember she followed up by saying, “clearly some of you are more up to date on the news than others. Do you know what a few nuclear bombs can do?” Someone responded, “destroy a few cities?” She replied, “more like a few countries!” I wish I could track her down; I’d love to hear her stance on the matter now. I guarantee you she, like many others, refuses to admit she was fooled. The majority of Americans have somehow convinced themselves that they were always against the war.

Right before the FDA associate was taken to a hotel for a week and said no before and came out saying yes. He was tortured into saying it wasn’t addictive and needed opium to make the pill. Morphine is needed for surgeries, for battle medics, for ambulances. Morphine is made with opium. It’s a little know fact but is absolutely true. 70% of the worlds opium lies in Afghanistan and Iraq. So we went and loaded up on oil and opium. Once we left they stopped manufacturing oxys. There’s documentation and documentaries on it

Taxi driver picks up customer with pieces of wood as baggage. Soldiers think it's justice to crush and destroy the taxi cab. The poor taxi driver lost his only form of income. That is just wrong. This a war crime and they should be held accountable. Courts Marshall for every soldier that participated.

Watching those soldiers destroying that man's car for taking a pile of wood, truly destroyed my heart and filled it with rage at the moment. That is exactly the reason why you just do not have a military police a civil population, they are just not up to the task, their training is diferent, they are trained to use brutal force, deadly force to resolve a situation rather than de-escalate it. The level of irresponsability and the lack of strategy from our goverment to go "liberate" the iraqi people is unbearable.

Yes we should have. It’s really dumb to be attacked on 9/11 and not expect an reaction. The taliban harbored alqueda. We got rid of em. And we pushed taliban back. Nation building may have not been in the details but what’s happening now is because a nation is not built.

None of the documentaries of this type is 100% perfect, but Frontline comes closest to perfection. Martin Smith is my top favorite warzone correspondent and interviewer; he goes where danger lurks. I believe, all in all, Frontline is the best documentary series of all of them. Thumbs up. Subscribed. Notifications enabled. Even so, it sometimes, rarely, promulgates false information. So... Everyone watching should be careful. Everyone listening should check for the facts.
