You could do either, from running sims it shows fire has a better average DPS so it’s more consistent but Frost has a higher top end so it’s less consistent but with a streak of luck it beats the fire damage :)

Going to try this out. Switching from fire, so my fire spell power is a lot higher than frost. You're saying to keep burnout in this case? Without FoF the shatter talent is just wasted? Also I don't have any ST gear yet. So, my mana pool is not as high. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Burnout is better in shorter fights, the longer fights you could run FoF + DF.

If this build is viable with another fire mage (because of the +15% fire damage) doesn't it make sense to still go for +fire damage (or flat spell power)? I mean the ignites are just going to be bigger and you do not loose in anything but deep freeze which you will do 1 to 3 times in the combat. I do not see the point in stacking flat frost damage? But I guess that the logs may differ...

That’s right, it comes out as around a 5% DPS loss so you could run Brain Freeze but it’s not as good as spell power

I thought about it but there is alot of AoE damage and pushback throughout the raid so I found Ice Barrier quite useful for that, espcially if the whelps are tickling you on shade but its entirely up to you :)

From personal experience, logs and my sims Burnout shows better on average especially on shorter fights. That said with perfect RNG FoF will be better, but it could also be a heck of a lot worse, that’s the gamble. As the fight goes on then FoF gains more value. That’s all I can say for sure, either works well

You can use both but bear in mind FFB doesn’t double dip, it’ll go off your highest spell damage but ignoring FFB then fire elixir will buff ignite and living bomb damage while frost elixir will buff deep freeze and cone of cold etc :)

Does ignite actually scale with fire spell power? Isnt it just a flat % of the crit. Stacked on top of more crits? I dont seen anywhere what spell power coefficient ignite has. I'm thinking that a frost mage will want as much regular spell power as possible. To make deep freeze and living bomb both as strong as possible.

I believe thats right, its a % of the crit spell damage but I can't say for sure. You're definitely right with regular spell damage, we'd want as much as possible but you come into situations where you're forced to choose between Fire or frost which would benefit you more overall. this is mostly Helm, Off Hand & Rings. The rest you can get very good regular spell damage options but that said we've seen some logs coming through that suggest during Icy Veins its better to not even keep LB up so on short fights you wont be using many LB's anyway

Untamed has hit so it’s a waste, 1% crit is worth around 9 Spell damage so outside of the fiery wrath belt Defilers cloth girdle is bis, especially since we don’t really want to stack a specific spell damage unless we really have to (Helm, OH, Rings)

Yes but on short fights then burnout is better but at 2min+ FoF + DF is marginally better on average but bare in mind FoF is not as consistent so the min is lower and max is higher, meaning if you get insane luck it’s super strong but if you don’t you’re a meme 😄

Ideally get as much normal spell damage as possible but eventually you’ll have to choose to stack one because of the items available. It’s best to stack +frost damage on the off hand & rings. +fire damage helps our living bombs but generally when using icy veins we don’t use living bomb anyway so +frost damage will be better for DF. From what I’ve simulated FoF with deep freeze becomes more valuable the longer the fight goes on but generally the better frost +dmg you have the better top end DPS you’ll have but the differences in numbers aren’t massive so I’d try to aim for as much normal spell power as possible, I know you can’t really avoid helm, OH and rings

Hey after watching and doing a little research myself is Frost only going to beat Fire when taking FoF+ Deep freeze? Seems like if we are running burnout when specced Frost we aren't able to utilize one of our main talents in shatter. Also, the talents in the fire tree are just way better from a pure dps perspective than they are in the frost tree. Curious if this is the case or if Frost can still top Fire when running Burnout

It’s because on certain items there isn’t decent normal spell power options so you’re forced to choose either fire damage or frost damage. The difference between them is minimal, fire is more consistent and frost has a higher top end

would not recommend getting a 2nd freezing band unless your fc'ing in wsg. 700+g for 3 more forst spell dmg is dumb just get 1 and the bloodmoon ring. also, in the frost mage rotation, do not use deep freeze right away, save it for the last fof proc and do a frostfire bolt and deepfreeze in the same global to get more dmg out of your procs

looking at logs (especially shorter fights) fingers of frost is almost never better. Looking at the percentages its a 15% chance on a frost spell to proc 50% gained crit (when buffed you're at 45%-60% depending on spec and debuffs). a 15% proc chance for 2 50% increased crits come out to be 15% flat crit. Realistically you would just go burnout since you're over the cap anyway but with the same flat % crit throughout a fight

You’re not wrong, on average burnout is better and loses value as the fight goes on but FoF deep freeze always has the highest top end in the sims. So eventually someone will get the perfect luck and top the rankings using FoF/DF but tbh they’re both very good and the difference between them is marginal

Winter's Chill is a sick dmg booster for mages, without a doubt. I don't think Frost can get ahead of Fire Mages, though. Simple math - if both get Imp Scorch and Winter's, Fire has 6% crit, 10% dmg from Fire talents, Frost gets 6% dmg, and that's it. Double Icy Veins? Sure, but only on short fights. Am I missing anything?

Yes but you need fingers of frost for it to work, otherwise you’re running burnout but it’s best to keep it in the spec because you may choose to switch between runes each fight. Sims are showing Burnout is great for short fights but Fingers of Frost having more value the longer the fight goes

Fire still better than Frost.. not hard to get insane logs with a specc no one plays. And the fire mage in your group is either bad or has no gear, buffs, consums.. whatever. You can check warcraftlogs for the rank 1 frost mage and you will see that he gets out dps by a fire mage in 8/8 fights.. sometimes by a whole lot!

No I don’t think he’s wrong, for the majority of us you’d use it like he says. The only argument for not using LB would be while you’re under the effects of Icy Veins so for the super short fights like the first boss you might use it on open and that’s it but when looking at top logs it can skew reality because the top frost mage is killing the first boss in 25 seconds, the majority of us won’t be doing that so I would say keep LB up unless you have icy veins up. Fingers of Frost rotation is WRONG!!!! You DO NOT USE DEEP FREEZE FIRST. During FoF You can FFBx2, and while the 2nd FFB is being cast, spam your Deep Freeze hotkey to try to make use of Spell Batching. Both the 2nd FFB and Deep Freeze will benefit from the FoF proc.

Bump. +1 this is absolutely correct. You use 1st FoF for FFB and while the 2nd FFB is about to go off you spam Deep Freeze. This way bots spells benefit from your 2nd charge of FoF!

Otherwise there's no reason to go FoF. 2) I have done the sims if you're stacking + fire gear, you'll do more DPS as Deep Fire FFB + Burnout. IF you're stacking + frost gear you'll always do more damage as Deep Frost FFB with FoF. The ONLY reason to go Deep Frost FFB with burnout is if you're being forced to by the second mage to get winter's chill and you don't have + frost gear. It's just a "support" build that isn't optimal. Anyways man, I do actually like your vids and I appreciate you preaching the mage word. Sorry for getting keyboard warrior aggressive on you! Hi mate, thanks for your comment. I can only answer this by running sims as its not something I've tested, using brainfreeze ends up around 5% DPS less than using spellpower so would it be viable? Yes - but not optimal, hope that helps :)

To answer this I run the sims. For a 60sec fight then burnout with fire gear comes out slightly on top. On a 120sec fight I’ve tested a combination of both fire and frost gear with burnout and FoF in separate simulations. Fire gear burnout comes out better on average but frost gear FoF/deep freeze has a higher top end. They’re both very good and extremely close
