The thing with floppy backpacks. They benefit from the structure a frame might bring. So a bit more comfortable. For the frame to work the backpack must be supported by the frame itself. Meaning the frame needs to be carried by the straps. If you use you backpack straps you're just carrying your current pack a bit tighter but with added weight of the frame itself. Which you can attach things to the frame at that point. Which will be supported by the frame which is supported by the backpack carried by the straps.

Hey mate thanks for your comment. I understand what you are getting at, this video was supposed to be about creating a field-expedient solution to the the pack being ‘floppy’ and uncomfortable. Tensioning the pack using the toggle was my solution for getting the weight of the pack up off my shoulders and onto my hips. I thought about taking the bag apart and making a better quality frame but ended up selling it! Have a good one.

Great video! Your pretty tough man! Sandals and shorts! Is this in Australia? I just bought this pack and after watching all these KZbin videos realized there is no frame! People are putting garbage cans in there pack to give shape. I wonder if packing it so your tarp (emergency blanket) is flat against your pack and pack things strategically? I’m not looking forward to having to do work on a pack I just spent $450.00 dollars on .

haha yep in Australia, where I was living at the time was too hot for anything else some parts of the year. Yeah I've heard of the garbage can/laundry basket trick and while it will give it shape all the weight will still pull back on your shoulders. Rigging it to an external frame is the way to go; I've seen versions made of PVC pipe that turn out well once painted. It's a beautiful pack and once you can get it sorted I'm sure you will be happy with it. Ended up being not worth the hassle for me and I moved it on. Thanks mate all the best

It's heavy but the only way those canvas packs are any good is when they've been attached to a Bul Pac or Nimrod frame.

Thanks for your comment mate. I ended up moving this pack along shortly after this video was filmed. I loved the aesthetics but they weren't worth the hassle.
