Sail faster by installing a new prop, Yep, thats the plan! www.sailingnandji.com
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we install our NEW Autoprop onto Nandji. We are very excited about this upgrade to our sailboat. In our eyes, this is the second most important upgrade we have made to Nandji behind the new engine. The Autoprop from Bruntons is specifically designed for cruisers at it can give an extra knot of speed under sail! That is a massive difference for us slower boats!
To install the Autoprop onto Nandji, we have to make a few modifications to the sweep area of the prop. As the new Autoprop has a little larger blades than our previous fixed bladed prop, it also is a feathering prop requiring a larger sweep area as the blades rotate 180 degrees giving the vessel the same power going astern as forwards propulsion. When under sail, the self pitching blades pitch to a degree where up to 85% of drag is reduced allowing the boat a much higher speed under sail! Stop it you say, well I agree my friend...
If you want to know more about the Autoprop, follow the link below...
bit.ly/Autoprop
With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. Currently on the hard stand, we are re-powering and completing a major refit!
We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades! Indian Ocean here we come!!

Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe Yeah, I’m working on a tugboat in New York while my own sailboat in Florida gets a new bulkhead installed in the cockpit abaft the binnacle. It’s actually the forward bulkhead for the engine compartment, so I hope its close to finished when I get home end of month so I can resume sailing myself. It got damaged back in December during a nasty weather system which tore the mast base right off. Crazy! I hope you guys finish the ToDo list and are back out cruising. Safe travels to you and Marley.

WHAT A PROP !!! I cracked a woody just looking at it. A 1-knot diff in speed might not sound much, but 1 knot over however many hours you are sailing makes a big difference. Cutting a bit out of your prop shaft is a lot easier than trying to make a short shaft stretch.
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 5 жыл бұрын
1 knot is massive for us! When we are always comparing single knots in speed. 4 is a good speed, 5 is flying, 6 hold onto your knickers haha Spot on with the shaft making it stretch is not going to happen!!

@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 5 жыл бұрын
Will have to view it under water to see exactly what is going on, water is too murky here though so havent been able to properly inspect when under load. When it is under load, the prop blades are more vertical and does not pass through the cut out when spinning. It only goes through the rudder cut out when switching from forwards to astern when the blades spin 180 degress.

Good job guys, looking good. Nice to see no shortcuts here, well done. Just a heads up with that key. When the 2 key ways are two different widths, a stepped key is the best solution. You should never reduce the total width of the key to suit the smaller width key way. It is more time consuming and fiddly but the stepped key is the proper way to go and ensures less likely potential for slippage and possible damage to the prop or shaft.

Looking good guys, someone mentioned here in the comments about using "Never Sieze" it is truly good stuff. When I was skippering charter boats (power boats) we used to use a product called "CopperKote" on the shaft taper & key, never had a problem removing the prop & shaft during survey's, it is seriously good stuff and a wise move to have a tin of it amongst your onboard spares. Very interested in how that prop works out? We have the Sanctuary Cove International boat show coming up on the Goldy late next month, hopefully they will have one on display, if your happy with it and it works as good as they say, then one will find it's way onto "Two Dogs" (Roberts 45). 😀

Hey guys great work on Nandji. I’m just catching up on your vlog and I just stopped at 10.44. I see you greased the taper on the shaft, this is a big No No on running gear. The taper is what drives the prop, not the key. There is a process called blueing the taper, this process matches the prop and shaft taper to each other. With a loose key and greasy taper, you will go hard astern on you main engine one day and loose your prop also damaging your rudder. If you haven’t already removed the grease, I would do ASAP, even if it means getting in the water. Props should almost be impossible to get off with out heat. One other thing, there is a lot of moving parts on that prop, try and bond the shaft to an anode, clamp one on or put a shaft brush on behind the gear box. Great work again.

Did you get a chance to measure the dead wood thickness before installing the stern tube ? My feeling is she's very thick in this area of the hull, so grinding a sizeable scollop on either side then tapering the laminate for re glassing will be no problem. Besides the strength loss in this area is very minimal, based on her design in around the aft end of the keel and bustle. 👍
