I absolutely adore this choreography. It completely portrays Anna's youth and her desire for human connection. Having a guy to love was a foreign topic for her her entire life, why would anyone expect her to NOT take a chance and get a little touchy? She's young and she's naive and she's awkward. @@alexismendozatv I haven't seen the show but I assume Anna is still supposed to be someone who has longed for human contact and love her whole life. Love is an Open Door was used to convey how she finally felt like she got that, so it was a romantic yet cute and quirky song. But this really just makes it feel like Anna's character motivation isn't love, but she just wants to bang Hans. And it's so overly goofy there's no time for romance or sincerity even between the sexual parts. I feel like adults deserve quality, too.

a lot of people are pointing out and lamenting the awkward, stiff, and over-sexual choreography and chemistry (or lack thereof), but they fail to understand that that’s exactly the point of this scene, and that that is what makes it so great. patti murin, the actress who plays anna, is stellar in her performance. her almost immature... fondling of hans here is precisely so as a result of her isolation and exclusion throughout her entire childhood (you can also see this very clearly in her ‘for the first time in forever’ performance) and this also plays in to the overarching theme of ‘true love’ in the entire story, as part of anna’s character development (in which anna realises that her supposed love for hans was superficial, and that her love for her sister, nurtured by warmth and compassion, is what’s right) (listen: the song ‘true love’ in the album). hans, on the other hand, doesn’t respond to the ‘advances’ of anna-initially. you can very clearly see his confusion and hesitance. but as the song continues, he grows warmer and more attuned to anna, because he’s starting to realise that he can manipulate and exploit her (look at the hand grab and the twirling). the original movie was criticised for the inexplicable revelation of hans’ true nature at the end, but the broadway showcases this ‘slip’ here, which provides a hint that can foreshadow the plot twist and thus, temper it, in a way. one critique i do have, however, is how dead the overall set is. the song is fun, lively, and exuberant, but nothing moves in the background to couple that. perhaps they couldn’t execute fancy manoeuvres on the GMA set, or perhaps it’s to further emphasise the stiffness of the scene, but it does take a toll on my enjoyment

But this WAS made to be unromantic. Nothing about this was supposed to be sweet. It was supposed to showcase superficial love and was made to cater to an adult audience. Broadway tickets like the one this was made for, is restricted to 18+ for a reason. Watching this WAS supposed to be painful to watch, because this wasn't true love. In the short choreography they had, it showed Hans being uncomfortable when Anna placed his arm around her shoulder. But quickly changed his attitude because he realized he could use this to manipulate her. So I think they portrayed this most exceptionally. So it's actually the movie that is weird, because Hans was such a sweetheart. So him being a Villain at the end just came out of nowhere.

If you really study Hans during this number, you can almost see exactly what he's thinking. In the beginning it seems like he's still kind of unsure of his plan, what I mean by that is how he'll go about it. But you see he's just casually playing along with Anna to get to know her better, in hopes of finding someway of getting to Elsa. The gears start turning at the towards the end of the first chorus, seeing that she's gullible he's probably thinking something along the lines of "Hmm maybe she could be useful" then he is caught off guard when she makes an advance towards him right at the end of the chorus. Sure, he's a charmer no doubt, but knowing his history I don't think he's had much experience with women at all, let alone have one all over him. This sensation is not only new to Anna but also to Hans. Out of shock, his first general reaction is to walk away from her to collect himself and try to comprehend what just happened. After a moments reflection he sees that she's not only gullible but also starving for affection, and most definitely attracted to him. Once he's come to terms with this, he realizes that he may be able to manipulate her, this could be his "open door" to the throne. But before foolishly jumping in, he needs to test the water. He needs to know just how hung up on him she is as well as how hungry for love she is. In order to find out, he comes back at her in the start of the second verse, approaching her in a nonchalant manner. Throughout this verse he is learning her, figuring her out. It's almost too easy, partially because he does see a part of himself in her. He knows the feeling of loneliness and uselessness just as much as she does. He knows the "pain of the past" and she's his ticket to say goodbye to it. He sees the victim that he's always been inside of her and needs to feel like he's in control for once. We see that long for control when he grabs her wrist. After that he follows her every move, almost chasing her down, he is so close to grasping his goal, he can't lose it now. But is he really chasing his goal or is his own hungry for attention gravitating towards Anna's affection. She is practically swooning over him and it feels good to someone who's felt like a screw up all his life. He catches his breath in an attempt to pull himself together. He begins to test her again by leading her to the side, a sign of control. But she once again catches him off guard and puts his arm around her, pulling herself closer to him. He glaces at her almost in disbelief. He has never experienced anything like this before and it shows as he awkwardly follows as she leads back in the opposite direction. In this moment he finds himself a bit side tracked, he's actually starting to enjoy himself and letting his guard down. Even someone with an agenda like his can't entirely deny Anna's warmth. He has never been treated with so much affection before in his life as well as met anyone so relatable and that draws him in. Just for a bit it seems like he gets caught up in having fun with her. He begins to drop the casual play-along mood and slowly starts to reveal his own quirks and goofier side that he would otherwise be judged for, but he feels a sense of safety with Anna. He unleashes for and more of his playful side on Anna and absorbs her contagious joy, but soon after reality catches up with him and it all comes back. Between the mixture of frantically trying to claim his goal and genuine happiness, his mind races. The next thing he knows, he's asking her to marry him. He holds his breath in nervousness awaiting her answer. When she responds with a yes, he knows he's hit the jackpot! He throws her over his shoulder in relief knowing that the beginning of his path to the throne is paved but also wonders at the back of his mind what he got himself into. As the number comes to and end his mind is moving a mile a minute, but he has a sense of security now. He can't believe he hasn't managed to mess this up yet and feels accomplished, like he could pat himself on the back, and Anna isn't so bad herself. He's felt so loved or successful at the same time in his whole life. The door to his future his wide open.

Idk why people critize this so much, for me this Anna is way too much funnier, brave and crazy than the movie xD plus remember this is a Braodway performance! It must be exageratted and a bit spicey in order to catch the attention of everybody, including those who are sitting in the back, it is not the same when you watch your tv lol

I don't realy like it...the actors are great! Don't get me wrong...the coreo just seems like they tried to hard...especialy this new part were they just “dance“. It was just like“what the heck are they doing now?“, it didn't seem to mean anything, it was just dorky. “Love is an open door“ is about annas dream of romantic coming true and this wasn't romantic at all. Yes anna is a huge dork, but you could have done it differently. I am realy sad, because frozen is a movie dear to my heart and I was excited about the musical...but I don't know if I even want to see it...?

the dance break is something done in musical theater. it wasn't done in the movie because it's done more often on live stage. it's just supposed to be entertaining. musicals really dont make any sense, but thats one of the reasons people like them. they're just for fun

I find this version so creepy and unnecessarily sexual, I don’t like the way he’s grabbing her and throwing her around, and at some points he even has his hands under her skirts which is just so creepy. Like just imagine the animated version of Anna and Hans dancing like this, it’s disgusting.
@leandro340046 жыл бұрын
Agreed!
@whymustielaine96406 жыл бұрын
I don't really see Hans being creepy in this, do you mean he has his hand quite far up her leg for the lifts? Because lifts are almost impossible if you don;t grab the person on the thigh, plus obviously in animation lifts will look more effortless than in real life. As Patti mentioned on twitter, her dress is incredibly heavy too, so it's not going to be quite as graceful as an animated lift. I think the choreographed lifts are meant to portray in a way their immediate closeness, as in real life lifts are hard to achieve unless 1. they are practiced and 2. there is mutual trust between the partners (trust them not to drop you, trust them not to kick you in the face)

When turning Frozen into a broadway musical the writers wanted to expand the audience. The movie is meant for children and is family friendly. The play is meant for adults, yes kids are going to watch and still see the Frozen they loved but now their parents and older audience members get to view the adult themes. There's an interview with the writer for the Broadway musical where they discuss this.

Jack Griffin he has to put his hands under her dress because otherwise he is only lifting her dress and not her or has a higher risk of dropping her I know from personal experience

this annoys me that the lady who played anna here looks older than kristen bell, is the same age as her but the broadway company wouldn’t let Kristen play anna in the show because she was “too old.” this is the same story with Idina Menzel. smh 😒🙄🤦♀️
@janeseymour38726 жыл бұрын
okay for everyone comparing it to shrek - shrek is a comedy and it’s not meant to be glamorous. this couple is supposed to seem glamorously in love- hell, the whole show is supposed to be ‘glamorous’ which, as i mentioned, is not shrek’s intention at all. the difference between this and shrek is that shrek accomplished what they wanted, and disney created a really sexual/pitchy/not right number that just doesn’t hit the mark. i don’t care for frozen but, man, did they fail at putting this number onstage.
@mariarinta-rahko9588 ай бұрын
This version was absoulutly perfect the acting was wounderful and you can see they had a blast performing the song together. The coreography was super cute and fits Anna's character absoulutly perfectly i mean she's been locked inside the castle all alone for too long never having the chanse to meet any loved once not even her sister so why on earth would she refuse now that she finally found someone she thought to be her love. I absoulutly love this version❤❤

I swear when she leaves the cast they’ll replace her with someone MUCH younger, or at least younger looking. She really looks her age, and can not convincingly appear as a young innocent woman.
@huntress18636 жыл бұрын
And what's wrong with talented 30 year olds portraying someone younger? It shouldn't have to be all about the age, it's about talent, which she and Cassie Levy both have. Unless you're a casting director who knows about these things, I suggest you leave it to the professionals.
@moppethead6 жыл бұрын
I don't care about age, I care about actors playing a role convincingly and there is nothing convincing about her as a young woman - her character seems older than Elsa!
@pepperspikes18495 жыл бұрын
agreed...christy altomare is 32 but portrays 18-year-old anya/anastasia perfectly in anastasia the musical. i am not a casting director, but youthful innocence is a big part of anna’s character; it’s not the fact that she’s young, but the fact that she is inexperienced and naive and lovable and awkward and sweet.

They worked really hard on this, they took the time to make this different from the original version. No one is original nowadays so I like how they jazzed it up a bit. @alexbirch76656 жыл бұрын
I feel like this whole thing could have been so great but flopped. Firstly the casting is all wrong. Anna is a hopeful ingenue that is thrilled to be in love for the first time; as mentioned by someone else, this portrayal is like a drunk aunt. Hans also doesn't have the poster-boy protagonist countenance that we saw in the first act of the film; here he is lewd, sloppy and in no way charming. The staging did not help them. The film is lively, cutting to different shots and backgrounds every few lines and the characters running to those different locations. Theatre is limited in this respect, although the lack of background and movement made the performance feel rather static. So, when the actors eventually do move, they are clunky and awkward. The costume choices, particularly accompanied with THAT choreography, further damages its appeal. The singing was often off key - admittedly this is a hard song to sing and I could not perform it myself, however this is a broadway production. I got so excited when I saw this and had such high hopes, but was so disappointed.

Honestly, people be throwing shade because, partly, they still expect it to be a children's play, as was the movie. 5hey literally had a whole ad? Explanation? That this production is meant for adults...the people who would actually go to watch a play at 8 in the evening on a cold January night...so Anna is meant to have habits that seem a bit like an aunt/old mom would... because that's their target..
