The next time you need to install bearings or bushings freeze the bearing/ bushings and heat with ever they go in(if possible) they should almost fall in. We us this technique in aviation all the time and it works well.

Hi Ray, with a lot of shrink fit experience, I might suggest our method, we used eco-friendly anti-freeze that we would freeze to a slushy and we had special gloves to protect our hands from the cold and the other part we would use hot water close to boiling and use Deltronic oil sprayed into the fit. Since I doubt you'll be doing this method very often, I doubt you'd want to buy a special freezer that will freeze anti-freeze. I just wanted you to know their is a work around without resorting to liquid Nitrogen, which we also had on hand if needed but it seems you have it under control, good luck to you

Ray, a WAY easier way to remove old bushings is just a drill bit against the outer shell. The rotation of the bit rolls it around the outer shell and drills the bond away. Takes seconds. Then saw-zall or chisel for outer shell.

Back in the 80's we pressed in a lot of 4 and 5 inch bronze bushings. They'd go in the freezer and you'd still have to pound them in. The first time we tried dry ice, the guy lined things up and proceeded to slide the bushing all the way through and onto the floor.

should have put the bushing in the freezer while taking out the old one, use some dish soap on the new bushing and use a ratchet to pull it in, no power tools. sometimes you have to slow down to go fast. and the dish soap? i swear, people forget the things learned as kids. remember struggling to get those cool rubber grips on your bike handles so you use a little dish soap to lube them up and they went right on and never came off. that has helped me more times than i can think of.

I had the same problem with replacing a ball joint on my 2000 Explorer. The borrowed ball joint kit I got from Autozone was just a little too big. I worked on that for two days. After looking through several videos, I saw one that someone used a ball joint kit from Advance Auto. I went and borrowed that one. The ball joint went in within two minutes of using the "correct" size kit from Advance.

Next one of those bushings you do the first thing you do after you cut that rubber out is take a cutter and cut that sleeve thats coming thru the frame and then it will just drop out. you should be able to cut it either with a torch or a recip saw. much easier that way but you do have to be very careful if you use the torch method. I learned te hard way also first time I replaced one of those. My boss came out and saw me struggling and told me how to get them out

@@mrmustangman Let me help you my inexperienced friend. And please mind your appalling language, children read this stuff. Stop cutting just before you break through. You didn't think of that did you. Then you get a chisel (metal shaft pointy at one end) and fold the ring in on itself at the cut. Even if you break through when sawing, you only leave a single cut mark on the support hole and that is no problem; the rest of the tube is untouched. Why do you think the entire inside of the tube gets damaged, did you try it and mess up? You are more likely to oversize the tube dragging the bush out of it when the two are rusted together.
