This is good knowledge to keep in mind especially when you play with a person who is new to the game or doesn't know the rules very well. Although I've seen some people still hit the ball dead on even though there's a bit of space and they don't know it's a foul

The league I'm in doesn't allow this type play. 45 degrees in any angle is required according to the VNEA rules. This also includes a heavier *(larger) cue ball in a coin operated pool table. Nice video....

Another great video! I have to rant a bit. I play in a weekly 8 ball tournament which uses some hybrid of bar rules (call the details nonsense) and ball in hand rules similar to BCA. They only exist in the tournament directors head. He has all the players (except me) convinced that the frozen ball rule is the same as the "close but not touching rule". If you shoot into frozen balls with a normal stroke, he will call a ball in hand push shot foul. He knows everything about pool so he won't actually open a rule book to check it.

You know, sometimes it’s slightly different for me to do shots that the pool balls are at the tiniest gap, so I have to raise my cue which sometimes feels uncomfortable. However, I have no problem when it comes to frozen balls.

No. When the CB is not frozen to an OB, the shots must be hit totally differently to avoid a double hit. FYI, lots of ways to both detect and prevent double hits can be found in the videos here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/foul/double-hit/ Enjoy!

Dave. I recently executed almost the same shot with my cue jacked up as your shot at 4:14. My friend immediately called a double hit foul even tho my cueball drew back on a slight right angle after contact. He said anytime the cueball moves forward its a double hit and refs will always call that a foul. Can you explain why this is not a foul and perhaps post a slo motion video of ball contact? Thanks

Great video as usual Dr Dave .. looking at the aiming system for frozen cue balls I came across another video which has a more accurate follow shot system than the 30 degree peace sign method you propose. In that system, if you want the cue ball to follow a particular line after hitting an object ball, all one needs to do is stand behind the object ball in line with the exact place you want the cue ball to go and keeping the opposite point on the object ball in mind and playing the cue ball with top spin into that point results in the cue ball going that way. I also tried the system out and it works like magic ( even better than the 30 degree rule). Could you do your typical analysis of this particular shot and talk about its applicability?

I sure like this when I am filming for a video. Fewer "takes" are required (except when I need to blast a ball into the pocket).

So the shot at 28 seconds is legal ? Because someone at my league BCA rules did that and they called it a foul because apparently he didn’t go at an angle. I feel if I do attempt that where I am I will get called out immediately

When a ball and a ball are attached, we say "FROZEN" If a ball and a ball have a tiny gap what would we say? Doesn't have any name of this word? In my country Korea, attached ball we say "FROZEN"/ A tiny gap we say "SWITCH" But I have no idea why Korean people say "SWITCH". I think it's kind of Konglish in Korea. Is that right word at this situation?

He's using APA rules. I think it's still a foul using BCA or VNEA rules.

Hitting into a frozen ball is not a foul under WPA, BCA, CSI, BCAPL, or VNEA rules. I was not aware it is a foul under APA rules. I just checked the APA rule book online and didn't find anything that indicated hitting into a frozen CB is a foul.

It is possible the shaft hit the top of the CB, but I don’t think it was “obvious.” The cue flexes and vibrates like this naturally. See the videos and info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/vibration/ This shot would certainly not be called a foul by a ref watching it live (or even with the slow motion footage) because secondary contact is not obvious.

In games in which the shooter is required to call shots, the intended ball and pocket must be indicated for each shot if they are not obvious. Details of the shot, such as cushions struck or other balls contacted or pocketed are irrelevant. Only one ball may be called on each shot. ... The eight ball may be called only after the shot on which the shooter’s group has been cleared from the table. Since he contacted the 8 ball first, one can infer that he was playing solids and his group was already cleared. Contacting the 8 and pocketing it in the intended pocket is a perfectly legal shot, regardless of any other object balls being pocketed. Perhaps you were thinking of the rule where only 1 ball may be called on each shot, and a player can only call the 8 ball after their balls are cleared. If he were playing stripes he would have to pocket the last stripe first before pocketing the 8, they cannot be pocketed on the same shot. (Not to mention that contacting the 8 first with one of your balls still on the table is a foul anyways.)

I remember personally shooting one of these after an 8 ball break in a VNEA tournament in Vegas. The CB was frozen to a ball off angle slightly. I was able to throw it in and break out a cluster using the techniques in this video.

Yes, standard pool balls like these are 2.25 inches. Very old balls can wear down to become slightly smaller, but the balls in this video look new.

@@DrDaveBilliards It's a local league in Puerto Galera, Philippines. If the balls are touching you have to shoot away from the ball. If it's 8-ball and the cue ball is touching one of your balls then you only need to get to a rail with the cue ball.

So like if the ball is moving across the felt while spinning in a counterclockwise rotation it is being thrown to right correct ? So then to create that effect from hitting a ball frozen to it you'd have to hit creating a clockwise spin ? Because it transfers in a figure 8 motion ? I remember learning this in a book years ago but would love to see a video explaining it. Thank you again.
