Hi, Brandy! The Thing from 1982 is kind of tied for my favorite horror film of all time. The other is Alien. I am so glad to finally have read Who Goes There? I did enjoy the story, though it wasn't perfect. I was impressed by this being his very first story. Thank you for the review. It was really, really good! Scott.

It wasn't his first story. It was his last. He published it in Astounding after he became the editor! LOL That still strikes me as kind of funny! And oh Alien! I really liked that one too!

@@thebookishbryants Yes Aliens was so-so. They probably should have just left it alone, because the rest were just plain terrible. Have you seen the prequel Prometheus? I thought that one was really good too.

The Thing is one of my all-time favorite movies. I've read Who Goes There? at least five times and Frozen Hell once. This was an excellent review from you and are certainly right about Campbell's descriptive talents.

Just finished the audio book. Loved It! 4 out 5. Another good one is Siberian Incident by Greig Beck. There should be a 1 season series on this book.

Will you be doing a video review for the sequel book to this universe "Things from Another World" by John Betancourt?
@TheBookclectic11 ай бұрын
Hmm. I was not aware anyone wrote a sequel. I don't know how I feel about reading a sequel to a story that has already ended perfectly and was not written by the original author, but it is a possibility. I will definitely look into that book and see what I think! ❤

I haven't read the story, but the empathy for the alien was interesting. It reminded me a bit of how Frankenstein's 'monster' was treated.

I'm new to the channel, and have subscribed. i really enjoyed this review. It's been quite a few years since I read the story, and will have to re-read soon. The THing 91982) is one of my favourite horror films. I definitely saw the ending of the Campbell tale as being more positive (for the humans, heheh) than the film, which went for a more ominous, very horror-type ending (which I really like). Campbell wanted his writers in Astounding to portray aliens that "thought as well as a man", but he didn't want them to be *better* than men, and so usually his stories kind of convey a "triumph of the human spirit" feeling to them, i think. BTW, the first film based on the story is called "The Thing from Another World", and I personally think it's very much worth a watch. Definitely not as "scary" as the 1982 film, but the way they portrayed the characters and dialogue in the 1951 version was awesome. it also has an ending thatis just a tad bit more like the story's, or at least, is probably something Campbell himself would have agreed with. The alien doesn't quite have the same effecta nd power, but I think is still quite an interesting creature in its own right, and the people on the base are well portrayed (very different from the story, though). There's even a woman in the cast and she's a pretty good character, too. It's a lot less like Campbell's story than the 1982 movie is and I almost feel taht makes it stand out in a special way.

@@TheBookclectic Hey, I don't know what your thoughts on 50s sci-fi movies are, but this is definitely one of the good ones. I tend to like them anyway (there's just something about the vibe some of these movies have) but even if it's not your everyday pleasure there's just so much historical significance in this one. And it's where the legendary phrase "Watch the skies!" comes from.

I LOVE the original WHO GOES THERE as well as the Carpenter film (and like the first THE THING too, tho it differs tremendously from Campbell's story). I found FROZEN HELL---other than a few passages and enjoying seeing more material on the original story---really sloppily written, almost incoherent in spots. (I also found him using the word "vast" repeatedly on the same 2 pages, showing this to be only a rough draft. Still, Campbell is to be commended for the story, one of SF's all time classics, and I'm glad that the longer version with all of its faults, has been published. Thanks.
