I’m in Fort Worth. Lost power several times, not as long as you, have a gas fireplace, but no water for several days so melted snow to flush toilets. ERCOT totally failed the whole state. Good to see you back again !!

I'm the Northeast and doing everything I could to assist the needs of Texans, every little bit helps. My family got together over Zoom and was able to put up 12 days for 6 families to stay in a hotel and making sure they have something to eat for all the children. I had to do something, heart is breaking. My former roommate lives there and we been texting every day since. It was her who helped us get these families in some kind of warmth. If everyone give a little it'll come out a lot. Glad you're safe.

Alberta here, we just came out of a 3 week stint of minus 40 temps. Luckily our power didn’t go out”this” time. However we keep two generators in the garage as well as some fuel. We did have one vehicle that froze and wouldn’t start for a while. Stuff happens, even if your in a warm climate, be prepared. It’s kind of like having some hand tools and other things with you when travelling on your bike...right?

Grim stuff, when severe weather blows through. In better times I'd advise swapping rims that have knobbies and Gripstuds on a lightweight beater bike and have fun with a snowsuit on! Whole house generators are brutally expensive but for anyone with a buried or above ground propane tank, there are many economical little dual fuel generators out there that can be lifesavers. Build a little shed for it to protect it from the elements and to attenuate noise, and put in a switchgear sub-panel to power key home circuits. It's a good Spring/Summer project to be ready for hurricane season. Love your channel Kevin, you're a kind and patient soul.

I know what you are talking about. I live in Quebec Canada and we get weather in the - 4 to -20f every winter. And in 1998 we had a big freezing rain storm that cut the electrical grid all over Quebec. I lost power for 2.5 weeks. Thank god for 2 wood stoves and a generator. I hope you and your family get through this in good health. We still have about 3 mouths before we see temps in the 70's. I am thinking of getting back to motorcycle riding for my 70th birthday and am watching your videos with great interest. Thank you.

I'm in Arlington. I think it was about 10-11 years ago a string of small tornadoes blew through town during a weekday, one just by my house. I left work right away and stopped at a Lowes on the way home to pick up whatever Chinese generator they had in stock. A 3200 Watt unit, the last in stock, set me back about $200 and for the best part of a week it kept my fridge and lights on. Later after a midsummer transformer explosion the same fridge and a small window unit ran through the night on that generator. This week it proved absolutely invaluable once I used a propane torch to warm the thick-as-mud zero degree straight 30-weight oil it uses. Two 600W heaters (radiator style oil heaters set on low) and one 1600W electric fireplace insert kept the house "sweater weather" cool while the thermometer outside ran completely out of degrees. No pipes froze. Everybody who can should keep a cheap generator in the garage or shed. Get a long heavy duty extension cord, two is better, read its power rating so you don't burn the house down. Of course, never run the generator in the garage or the house itself. Learn how to use it when the weather is nice so you aren't trying to figure it out in the cold and dark. Each time you put it away do like winterizing a bike. Run it out of gas, Change the oil, Clean or change the plug, and you will be ready for next time. There will be a next time. FWIW, having a chainsaw and keeping an emergency stash of water and no-cook food is wise. Our Coleman camp stove came in handy. Make your list now while you are thinking about the things you wished you had back during this dreadful week. Best wishes to everybody here. May your power be back on, your water drinkable, and your pipes leak-free!

I know those kind of freezing temperatures are uncommon down there especially during a power outage. But up here in the north when we have these issues and the water still running we make sure that the cold water taps in the house are turned on and running very slowly because running water cannot freeze in the pipes. And even if you shut the water off at the mains still open all the faucets so that any freezing will go longitudinally in the pipe and not horizontally and burst

I live just south of Denton. Except for the water heater, our house is gas. However, with no electricity, the gas heat doesn't work (no blowers). We were without power for about 48 hours of the 5 days that the outage lasted. Unfortunately, about half of that time was during the first two overnights. Wife and s-i-l spent the nights huddled in front of our fireplace. Given a choice, I prefer to sleep in a bed. Upstairs bedroom temps fell to about 40F. No problem; my wife is a quilter. We have plenty of quilts and blankets. Still, it wasn't as bad as the winter FTX in Germany in Jan, 1986. We were camped out in tents on a hill in a German forest for a week (7 days, 6 nights). The highest it got was about 25F. We decamped in the snow.

I'm a FTW native, live about an hour west now in Lipan. we had the same. we made instant coffee in the fireplace and cooked food in a cast iron skillet there too. decided we had to go #2 so we used 10 gallon trash bags for that. no water in the john anyway so we just lowered the bags down in the pot and sat on the top of the bag while we did our business. pulled the mattresses off and put in front of the fireplace. we're used to camping so it was about the same as that!

Hey Kevin, glad to hear you have some semblance of normality and I trust your water connection will be restored shortly. Modern conveniences and how we depend on them show us shortfalls.
