I love having a 'grocery store' in my garage, as well as preps for every other aspect of my life. My adult daughter rolls her eyes, even though she makes a considerable income she is a minimalist, so will see how long it takes before she decides to shop here, when the store shelves are empty, she may just change her mind. Stranger things have happened. Besides, being a mindful prepper is the very best hedge there is against inflation and shortages.

Wedding dress recycle idea- I found a seamstress who made two baby gowns and blankets for babies who passed at birth. She then made each of my boys handkerchiefs. One was done more masculine and one was made from the lace of the dress (for their future wives) for their wedding days.

I love the fact that you love the bookcase your grandpa built. In this day and age too many people don’t have or keep sentimental items. They toss things out and run to IKEA for a new one 3 years later. It’s a beautiful bookcase that hopefully one day will reside in the home of one of your very own grandchildren. They will be able to tell the sweet story about how it was built by their great great grandfather! ❤

My husbands grandfather built furniture and we have a couple dressers and some bunk beds we still use and also passed down a desk to one of our daughters, she’s a teacher, that she uses now. They just don’t make high quality furniture like that anymore. These pieces were built by him in the 1940’s! So almost 100 years old now and they are better built than what you can find today and still in perfect condition!

Canning is my new obsession. Our grocery store often sells boxes of produce for $5. Which is a steal of a deal given how expensive produce is lately! I love being able to buy & preserve food for a later time, adding to my food storage. ☺️

I haven't done it yet, but I plan on using those colorful round yard sale stickers to put on the front of boxes & cans. Yellow stickers for 2023 expiration dates, green for 2024 & so on. I can write the months on the sticker too. Would make it easier for me to quickly see what needs to be used first & those household members that can't read or see well can use it too.

You did an excellent job of organizing your food storage room! Mine is set up very similar with the heavy duty racks. One additional thing that I do is to put the expiration date on the front of every single item with a big black magic marker so that I know which one to grab first. I always try to put the newest bought products at the back of the line, but that doesn’t always happen, and so putting the date on them helps. Good job!

New subscriber! At the beginning of the pandemic I realized I wasn't utilizing our large food room (as we now call it). I kept the majority of our food in the kitchen cupboards. When I moved nearly all the food into the food room and organized it, that room became my favorite room in the house. I could see all that I had! I knew when I needed to buy more of something - or had too much of something that we don't eat a lot. And being able to see what you have on hand food-wise also relieves stress! 😊

Hey Christine, I sat in my long time storage room they other day and dated every single item and put them in order of expiration dates. It made me feel much better about knowing what I have and to use it before it goes bad. Have a great day.

I would love to have something like your basement one day. Apartment living doesn’t allow for this kind of food storage very easily.

We lived in apartments for most of our marriage. We bought underbed storage and kept rotating. My husband wasn’t a huge fan but we lived very minimally but I always liked to be prepared. So balance was always key for me and he appreciated it when we lost our income. It doesn’t have to be overbearing 🙂

It’s a bit more challenging, but entirely possible: -get rid of stuff you don’t use. If you don’t entertain often, fo you need big platters? Use foil ones. Small appliances you don’t use? More than 2 sets of linens per bed? More than 2 bath towels per person, plus guests? -don’t store water, get water purification tablets -don’t store many multiples of cleaning products -put a high shelf around all your walls, if you can -put a shallow set of shelves behind doors -get bed risers, to add an extra handspan of space under the bed. -put boxes under living room furniture -use boxes or cases as end tables, disguise with a cloth and a tray on top. -use a chest as a coffee table

I’ve been able to minimize enough to turn my linen closet into long term food storage. I keep extra bedding under the bed, towels and such in the bathroom with over the toilet shelves and the existing cabinet, and misc odds and ends in a shoe hanger on the back of the laundry room door (extension cords, etc.). It took a while to pare it all down and learn how few of something I could keep, but it’s given me an entire closet for food storage!

@@evelynsaungikar3553 I don't store a lot of cleaning products, because I am allergic to scents/dyes. So, I have gone back to using basic items, like baking soda, vinegar, etc for cleaning. Less chemicals and less things to take up room. I would still stock some water, unless you happen to have an available source of water somewhere, if the faucets quit running. The purification tablets are only going to be good, if you can find water.

This reminds me of my sister. She likes to buy in bulk & she is only one person with 2 dogs. Most of the stuff expires, so she throws it out or gives it to us before it expires. Seems very wasteful, especially since she likes to eat out a lot. 😮

I am so glad this video came up on my feed. I like that you are using items that are repurposed, from other food purchases, affordable stores to purchase containers. I only wish I had a way to search comments as I need shelving purchase info. Used handwritten labels vs cricut that I don’t have room/budget for. I have a storage but need to update my shelving. Hoping to find one that is easy to build since I am alone on home maintenance/updates and learning to DIY. I appreciate your calm presentation, low background music while speaking, smooth camera operations to present your video. I hope you kept grandma‘s quilt that project sounds beautiful with your grandma. 💜

Wedding dress ideas - Be sure to save a piece of the fabric for your daughter’s wedding (something old), but I would either use it for a quilt topper or for pillow covers for a guest room/office. It’s beautifully designed and is in great shape!

Marking the expiration dates on the cans then stacking them that way is key to not wasting food because it's expired. You should repackage all your oats because they due go stale. I'm in the process of this as I just made one room I to food storage. Good job!

I learned that you can actually donate wedding dresses for babies born sleeping / still birth babies. I'm not sure how it all works, but I was once told that the material is used to make " blankets" or wraps for the little angles. It's a great way to do something meaningful with your dress and for the lost ones family.

Save your wedding dress! I saved mine and through the years we have cut my dress up to make sentimental things for my grown children’s weddings, ie ring bearer pillows, handkerchief’s we sewed into the hem of wedding dresses and baptismal dresses, covered a Bible in it for weddings. Really, anytime you want/need something sentimental for an occasion. So glad I saved mine. My kid’s found it very nice to have touches of our wedding used discreetly for their weddings.

Great job Christine must feel amazing to get it done even if you needed the nudge. I agree with 'like for like' pantry organization otherwise I get lost to what I really have. Wedding dress is a tough one, would be great if you could sell it, might just be another lucky lady out there who's been looking for something like this. Or give to a charity group that provides graduation dresses to those who can't afford them maybe they could dye the dress, or a theatre group. Next job...drywall the ceiling go Dave go ! great video Christine ♥

What a wonderful transformation. Your family's reaction was brilliant. :) I am not sure if you get pantry moths in your climate, but if you do, those Animal Cracker containers that you put your pasta and rice into could have a few fresh bay leaves put in the top to deter the moths. The leaves won't transfer their flavour to your stored products. Thanks again for sharing this monumental effort to clean out and organise your storage area. I enjoyed this video immensely, as I do all of your videos. Greetings from Australia. :)

If not meal moths, something will likely crawl through the gaps in those plastic lids or the contents will go off quicker than if they were properly stored. If I don't have appropriate storage containers, I wrap the contents a few times in well sealed Ziploc bags before I put them in the container and transfer them to airtight containers later.

My wedding dress (38 years ago) was remade from my mom's dress - which had been hand sewn by my grandmother. A dear friend of our family took the dress top apart and created what I wanted. . . . . . neither my daughter nor my granddaughters will probably use it because of the style BUT really want to keep because it's candlelight ivory velvet - very lightweight but cannot be purchased anywhere for years now . . . . . . maybe one of my granddaughters will deconstruct it for their own wedding dress in the future !!!! . . . . . much needed inspiration today - thanks - really needed declutter coming up !!!!

I have always had a large stocked pantry. I think it saves money to buy things on sale and restock only when things are on sale. I love that I can make anything I want without a trip to the grocery store. I never thought of it as “preparing” for an emergency but boy was I happy I had it when Covid hit. I didn’t have to worry about going to the grocery store or about finding a store that had delivery or curb pick up in the beginning of Covid. I love how nice your storage came out. It looks beautiful!
