How to Meal Prep for Zero Food Waste Frugal Living

French Bread Pizza Recipe:
1) Split rolls and brush with olive oil
2) Sprinkle on the herbs and spices of your choice...garlic, onion, oregano etc.
3) Bake at 400 degrees for 6-7 minutes until lightly toasted
4) Coat top with tomato sauce, sprinkle with mozzarella, and then top the cheese with a bit more sauce
5) Freeze flat on a cookie tray/when frozen place in freezer safe bags
6) When ready to cook place frozen on a cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for approx. 15 min or until cheese is melty
Pesto Recipe:
2 cups fresh Basil leaves
1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/4-1 clove garlic depending on taste (the garlic will make the pesto very spicy and have a bit of a bite)
Black Pepper to taste
1 Tablespoon Lemon
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Combine all ingredients except Parmesan in a food processor until combined.
Add the Parmesan cheese and process again until combined
Refrigerate immediately
Lasts 3 days in refrigerator or several months frozen (in ice cube trays)

Great tips and a great goal of zero food waste. I buy leafy greens and get so mad if I let anything turn to slime. A couple systems work for me. I keep two plastic baskets in the fridge. One has small containers of cut up onions, peppers, and carrots I can easily throw in a stir fry. The other has a small bin of washed spinach and another of kale. I have two days worth and plan meals with them. I don't buy anything else until I get the current food on the menu. Little scraps go into the compost to help grow future veg. Making steady, slow progress.

Frozen cherries are great for cookies, desserts, oatmeal. Awesome way to de-pit them. I made some cashew pesto the other day and froze it. I am allergic to pine nuts so I used cashews and it came out fantastically! It’s probably the best pesto I have ever had. Awesome no waste meals! Ooh and yeah, frozen French bread pizzas are a great idea for those nights you don’t want to cook. Easy peasy to heat up and add whatever toppings you like.

Today I made Buddha bowls with leftover quinoa, Cuban black beans & the veggies from the last 2 night's dinners. I added leftover chicken to my partner's dish ( he still eat fish\chicken) and lunch was done. As of right now we have no leftovers, hooray! Fits right in w/ this video. All sizes of freezer ziplock bags are my best friends. I have a very small freezer so I use ziplock bags instead of freezer containers to maximize my space.

I’ve seen people pit cherries similar to you, but they put the cherry on top of an empty pop bottle or water bottle. You push the pit into the bottle. No stain, no escaping pits. Just fruit. Debi in Vicksburg, MS. 🥰🥰

when i'm cooking italian sausage to use on a pizza (I do this a lot), I add water sooner rather than later. It helps me break down the meat into smaller pieces which we prefer on our pizzas. I drain the meat and use a measuring scoop to package cooked 1/2 cup sausage into sandwich bags. The sandwich bags go in a zip lock bags. Our favorite pizza is made with naan bread that I buy on clearance at Aldi. We always have cooked sausage in the freezer so we can make up pizzas when the masses are starving.

I buy fruit at good prices and freeze in small quantities to make fruit smoothies with in the morning. I just add plain yogurt and a couple of ice cubes along with frozen fruit pieces. I use my Ninja to create my smoothie. Delicious!

This is something we have been working on! I realized recently that every week we throw away lettuce... so now I’m just not going to buy it. I’m the only one that will really eat salad, but I’m happy to eat the raw veggies without the lettuce, so that is what I will do! And we have been trying hard to eat all of our leftovers. We aren’t perfect at it, but we are definitely throwing away less than we used to. Great video!

To save some $ & time, frozen or not, put contents into a folding sandwich bag before putting into one of those expensive freezer bags. You can use your freezer bags over & over without the washing in between. Throw away the cheaper fold over baggies.
