The lack of barriers and hand railings in Portugal is no joke. This is something I've noticed almost everywhere I've been to date. Whether it's the cliffs of the Algarve or the walls of Óbidos, safety standards are a bit lax. When looking out at a great view, it is very welcome. However, each year there are a few people that do not heed warning signs and end up paying a steep price. When I come across situations like you show in this video, I think it's a good idea for it to be fixed as there is no warning sign and one slip can be life changing.

Thank you for your comment, Todd. I must admit that this is one of the quirks I really enjoy encountering in Portugal... seeing potentially dodgy/dangerous places that are left for the public to work around. The walls at Óbidos were definitely scary in places, but that's my version of going on a rollercoaster... that's enough excitement for me! ~ Mandy 😀😁

Hi there, revolt7! It was so much fun with the chooks... I seriously considered going vegetarian as loved the white frangos - they were so gentle and inquisitive. The cats and dogs at the quinta are so lovely, especially that very talkative Mr Bobby 😻 I didn't actually get sick of eggs but I don't think I'll be able to face asparagus again for quite some time! 🤣😁 ~ Mandy

Wow, that cooking Mandy! That was excellent. What lovely sits you get (together and those alone). Simply cannot beat the prices at Lidl. It'll be nice to see you reunited and I'm looking forward to Praia d'Rey, of course. Timeline-wise, I'm wondering if this will be your stay at Eva's. Have to wait and see ;)

Hello Jen! We are truly blessed with our housesits, and are fortunate enough to have repeat sits in the pipeline, including two more with Eva! We didn't film much from that sit in Praia d'el Rey, as wanted to catch up a bit to where we were in real time. Next week's video starts our Tomar/Évora/Faro holiday series, which was filmed in the first 2 weeks of May, so we're finally catching up 😁 We're going back to PdR in 10 days, and I'll take enough footage for another video from that beautiful area! I spent 3 weeks on my own at the quinta, so only had the supplies at hand to cook with... which luckily included loads of eggs, and delicious veggies from the garden! I lost weight and had so much more energy after that time... I'd like to adopt it more in normal life. Thank you for taking the time to write , Jen, as we always love to hear from you! ~ Mandy 😀😁

If was great seeing the various chores you have while sitting. I especially enjoyed your cooking as a frying pan and various veg usually works so well. I've been getting into tinned fish and find the value for money quite good with several brands here. I've been looking at frying them up and adding them as a warm protein topper to salads even.

Hello Todd! Thank you for your excellent comment and great suggestions. We only tend to eat the tinned sardines in spicy sauce or with a chilli... what are your preferred tinned fish? I wish I'd had more footage from the quinta sit but it was difficult with my S8... I only had 3 selfies in 5 weeks, and they were all in Nazaré! Fingers crossed we get to meet up next week, as it would be cool to chat in person! ~ Mandy 😀😁

@@FrugalTravellers I prefer mackerel. In Portuguese, I believe that translates to cavala. However, I prefer the horse mackerel variety and that is carapau. I've had a lot more sardines than anything due to availability. Last month I had the Pingo Doce brand sardines in tomato sauce (€.85) and thought that was very tasty. However, I prefer the spicy olive oil overall. I've never had it with a chili inside the tin, and can't wait to try. We were in Baixa Lisbon and only a block away from a very traditional shop named Conserveira de Lisboa. The quality was much higher, but €3-4 a tin makes it a pricey occasional treat.

Brian, you have made our day! Thank you so much for your very kind comment, it's always so wonderful to hear from new viewers, especially when they go back to our early videos and enjoy them! We're backpackers who decided to start recording our journey, as we want to share how easy it is to travel independently on a budget... so our videos are quite raw in comparison with other travel channels. We hope that showing practical information and prices makes up for not being professional video editors! Thank you so much for taking the time to write, and we look forward to hearing from you again! ~ Mandy 😀😁

I remember being shocked by the lack of barriers to stop you falling from heights when I first went to Portugal! I kind of got used to it, but then when I went back with a small hyper-activer toddler the fear returned!
@FrugalTravellers2 жыл бұрын
Oh my word, I can imagine how scary that would be with a very active toddler! It still makes us do a double take every time we encounter a potentially risky setup, but I think it's part of the charm of Portugal 😁😀 ~ Mandy

I'm always interested in what folks are eating during their travels 😄. It's a huge bonus when delicious food is also very nutritious and beautiful to look at, too. It's a treat to be able to cook and eat the freshest veg grown just outside your doorstep! For all your efforts to create a video, it's the least i can do to feedback 😉. See what i did there? I almost didn't 😂. I appreciate the content you folks put out, and i mentally note your clever finds and tips. It's a joy to travel about Portugal with you, and you guys make me hopeful to visit Portugal again and enjoy it as you do

Cool video Mandy. I booked an apartment for our Nazare stay next year and we are about 100m from that Brazilian place, so will be going there definitely. Wow what a great experience staying at all those different housesits. Are the owners all going away on holidays? Must remember that wine, sound right up my alley.

How wonderful that you're going to Nazaré next year, Cindy... and that you'll be staying in such a great location! We've been so fortunate with our housesits here in Portugal. A lot of the owners went to visit family back in their original countries once borders finally opened up again. The quinta sit is one of my favourites... gorgeous pets and such amazing fresh vegetables and eggs! I really liked that wine... but to be perfectly honest, I've liked all the wine I've tried in Portugal, and you certainly can't beat the price here! 🤣😀 ~ Mandy

Oh, that is so lovely, GiigiZ X! Thank you for your very kind comment... it's not something I hear often, so it's a wonderful compliment indeed! I really enjoy making everyday life videos but we're never sure how viewers will react to them on a travel channel. I was actually planning to film our day tomorrow, to make a Day in the Life of a Housesitter vlog, so your comment has reaffirmed that idea! Sending best wishes from Praia d'el Rey, Portugal! ~ Mandy 😀😁

@@FrugalTravellers it’s definitely harder to grow as your own brand rather than a set topic. I know this from bitter experience!!! I’ve made 1090ish videos and still under 5K, but that said, the daily vlog audience is an extremely loyal one that comes back to watch every video. Most of my views are returning viewers. I find it hard to get new eyeballs on my content without a set topic.

@@PlanetImo I hear you. We've had consistent growth from our Portugal videos, mainly from US & UK viewers who may be looking to move here... which means when we leave Portugal, we'll lose that audience. Thanks Mandy for sharing life on the Quinta. Even with the dogs and cats I dont think I would like to be there on my own and no running hot water! We had one black cat - Rasputin, one Ginger -Oscar and several in between. We also had chickens in Katmandu but someone else did the cleaning :) I did not eat chickn for some 20 years!. Must note the name of the wine, it sounds interesting. The mixed grill is enough for both of us. Must go through all your videos to work out connecting buses. Here is an asperagus recipie for you to try. 1/3 cup of lemon flavoured olive oil; 2 tbs white balsamic or white wine vinegar; 1 tbs each of choped dill, tarragon and chives and q crushed clove of garlic. salt and perrer to taste. 800g sparagus and 400g fata sliced. Mix oil, viengar and herbs and garlic in a bowl. Cook the asparagus for 1 min and drain. Arrange on a serving dish top with feta and spoon over dresing.

Hello Christine! Thank you for your great comment and for the asparagus recipe... I don't think I'll be able to face any asparagus for a year or so as ate way too much 🤣 How lovely that you lived in Kathmandu and had so many pets. I loved my time on the quinta, and it was wonderful being off-grid. I never felt lonely as Lee and I chatted at least 5 times a day, and I would also have great chats with Leia and Mr Bobby 🐶😺 I would definitely go back as thoroughly enjoyed my time there! ~ Mandy 😀😁
