That is so cool to hear! Thailand was actually the first foreign country I visited after NZ & Oz, way back in 1993... and it's still one of my favourite countries, with my absolute favourite food! I filmed so many meals and slices of Thai life this time round... so it'll be a good introduction for you, Imo. I do hope you venture to South East Asia sometime soon 😃😁 ~ Mandy

Welcome back to Thailand again. I was a scholarship student (granted by Australian govt) studying in Newcastle Uni from 1971-76. The year I arrived TV was still B/W and within 2 years color TV was introduced. It was a roaring success. Within one year of color TV debut, about 50% households had color TVs. By 1976, it was reported that color TV penetration was 100%.

Accommodation looks amazing! Absolute bargain. So jealous of all the Thai food. Why did you return to Thailand?
@FrugalTravellers
@FrugalTravellers Жыл бұрын
Hello Julie! One of the main reasons we went to Thailand was the bargain flight we found from Bahrain with Kuwait Air, as we were heading back to NZ and Australia to see family. The other main reason was because 14 years was a long time to be away from the home of my favourite food! I used to go to Thailand regularly to visit friends in Nakon Sawan, so Thailand felt like a second home for years.

We always use to stay that way but not anymore, too noisy and expensive. We visited BKK in June this but stayed elsewhere but did visit Khao San rd for the day but busy and costly. Still love Thailand and there are other places in BKK that offer good value as well.

I was Googling just now to see what language you need for Thailand and it said 'Thai' but that also English was considered unofficially a second language there. Does everyone speak English? I think I'd feel more confident to go if so - becasue of not eating meat, mostly! 😆 But in case of health emergencies and things, too.
@FrugalTravellers
@FrugalTravellers Жыл бұрын
A bit of Thai is useful to know but it really doesn't matter because so many people speak English there. There is always someone around who can help you out translating. It's one of the easiest countries to travel in in Asia in that respect. Go for it Imo. You won't regret it. 👍

Lee's reaction was like mine, have to say I really do not enjoy Thai food, I can't taste it, for the heat. Fried rice was my go to food for the whole month, lol. We stayed just a 5 min walk from Khao San Rd.

When I first went to Thailand in 1993 and made friends with Thai English teachers, I was surprised to learn that some of them didn't like spicy food either. There are many non spicy dishes, from pad Thai, Tom kha gai, and the many delicious noodle soups. Just say "Mai chawp phet", ie "I don't like spicy", and the heat level should be toned down 😃😁

Hello M&L-My big mistake? Watching this video before dinner! Now I’m hungry…for Thai food of course.😅 Bad news? Closest Thai restaurant has closed so need to find another. 👎🏻 I’m with Lee. I’d think I’d order the 50/50 spice option (at best) except I wouldn’t know what their 50% is equivalent too so always some risk. 🤷 🔥 Surprised Mandy poured her drink on ice. Do you find water or ice safe to drink in Thailand? Cheers. 👋🏻
@FrugalTravellers
@FrugalTravellers Жыл бұрын
The food is so good there. It's worth risking some of the spicy dishes. I think you build up an immunity with it after a while. 😁 It's fine getting ice from the street stalls. You see the guys delivering it in huge blocks. We've never had a problem with it. We don't like buying bottled water so we use tap water and filter it with our Sawyer water filter and sterilise it with a steripen. Saves a lot of money and thousands of disposable plastic bottles. 👍😁

@@prasuntambul9813 These are the rough coordinates from Google Maps: 13.7591574, 100.4950950 One of the easiest ways to work out where it is, is to walk along Soi Rambuttri past the Ferris wheel, and follow the signs saying "this way to Khao San Road" which lead you to this alleyway and the delicious food. That's a big room for less than £10, I can't remember if you actually set a daily budget and respect it. I am about to head out however I never did a daily budget and almost always blow off my savings which restricts how long I can travel without having to come back to recharge... How do you plan your budget in each country please?
@FrugalTravellers
@FrugalTravellers Жыл бұрын
Our average daily budget is maximum $25 each per day. Obviously in some countries it's harder to stick to this so we just try to average it out by spending time in better value countries. Thailand is definitely one of those and I think in this trip it came to $11 per day each. 😊

Welcome back to Thailand. 14 years ago, Thai people didn't eat as spicy as today. Now Thai people eat much spicier food than 14 years ago. If you order food, you have to say add 1 chili pepper. Then you'll get food that isn't spicy. If you say only 50/50 spicy It will be very spicy for people who can't eat spicy food. This is because Thai people have been eating spicy foods for a long time. If you eat the same amount of spicy food, you won't feel spicy. So you have to keep increasing the spiciness.
