EXCELLENT! I've watched 10 different videos on pruning blackberries, most were pointless and too long, this was THE BEST. BY FAR!

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THIS MOST INFORMATIVE AND CLEARLY UNDERSTANDABLE VIDEO!!! I have struggled for 7 years about how and when to prune my transplanted blackberries. So they became a jungle. I figured even if I did it wrong, anything was better than the berry jungle I was raising. Thank you again so very much. I also found and learned that there are at least 5 different birds who are not smart enough to not nest on the ground (inside my blackberry jungle) because my dog found the nest...and some baby birds appeared. I don't know if they fell from the tree or my dog's mouth. Either way, they were not alive but still warm when I found them. So, in the process of getting excited over your clearly narrated video, I also learned about the dumb birds. My blackberries thank you also!!! I can't tell you how many videos I had to watch before I found yours! p.s. I am 20 minutes south of Atlanta if anyone else needs a great video...this is the one to watch!!! p.s.s. my new go to line for pruning is "red or brown? CUT IT DOWN!!"

It is true not all birds build nests in trees. And only trying to be helpful he said the green ones and sometimes red ones are your new shoots. You don't always want to cut down the red ones. One really great way to remember is cut it out after it is done fruiting.

Thanks for showing how it's done. I think I need to trim a few of mine back a bit more. I also think on the first bush I trimmed the laterals too short.

Great video. I'm going to look into planting some of these. As I'm watching this video, I thinking "I can do this!" Thank you.

I live in Michigan and go south from Jan 01 to May 01. Is it better to prune my Blackberries before I go away or when I get back. Thank you

1.Is there anything to do after the berry's are picked?2. I have new growth that looks great, should I clear out the old canes after all the fruit has been picked to stimulate new growth?
@AginArk4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, @Charles Brooksher! Our expert Clay Wingfield says that it would be a good idea to remove the old canes after all the fruit has been picked. He added that a light fertilization may also be helpful. Hope that helps!

Is it a good idea to prune the new canes mid summer as they are growing(for like a controlled grow) or is it best to just let them grow and prune them in fall when you get rid of the old canes?
@stevenmarshall14047 жыл бұрын
ARextension looks like he was doing it in winter where I'm curious as to doing it now during the summer. I just tipped mine around 50" due to the height of my trellis and my laterals are a good 6-12" long. I plan to trim the laterals shortly. Hopefully doing it now during the summer won't cause any issues. lol.

Hi Steven. Our specialist in the video, Clay Wingfield, responded to your question. "Yes , prune the new canes at about 45 inches high to encourage side fruitingbranches." We hope this is helpful as you prune.
@AginArk4 жыл бұрын
Again from Clay Wingfield: "Summer pruning is good and prune laterals at about 18 inches"

I have 2 to 3 foot tall canes that I bought in fall. Should I be doing any pruning?
@m1ste2tea6 жыл бұрын
@@AginArk ok. Sounds good. Thanks for the reply.
@AginArk4 жыл бұрын
Hi m1ste2tea! Here's a response from our specialist Clay Wingfield: "Probably not. Wait until you are sure the canes are dead before pruning out. You can tip them to encourage branching in spring. You can prune any side branches to 15 inches now."

Do the spent canes you chopped grow back?
@AginArk4 жыл бұрын
Clay Wingfield tells us: "No they do not grow back, but new primocanes will grow from the root system."

Hi Tim! Here's a response from our specialist Clay Wingfield: "Leave it until it leafs out or dies and more canes should come up from the crown." Please let us know if you have any more questions. Thanks!
