Have you tasted mature, perfectly ripe Hass, Sharwil, Fuerte, and Reed FROM CALIFORNIA? Hard to beat those (all 10's)! And then there are the Hawaiian varieties--a bunch of those--but like California avocados, they're not their best in Florida. So if Bumpy, Kampong, and Oro Negro are a 9 and Simmonds, Lula, and Marcus are a 7/8, what would you give Dupuis (from memory)? Did you know there's a Maluma (South Africa) and a Malama (Hawaii)? Yeah, I'm kind of crazy about avocados, too. I take care of all the seedling trees in my neighborhood. Maybe we'll get a winner! My neighbor's got one that's earlier and better than Lula (but similar), but the tree grew really tall and weird for him, and it's an absolute squirrel magnet. I'd like to see someone take some budwood and grow it under ideal conditions.

The "Bumpy Avocado" looks so different! I'm going to have to try; seems like one I'd like as I like the richer/nuttier flavored. I love the Oro Negro and the Nishikawa. I also have Lula and IMHO it's way too early to be eating those now; I get them in Jan/Feb/March and they are much better then. Good Job Paul!

Paul, I'm following you from Anaheim, CA 3-4 miles from Disneyland here. I really love this video you made of the Bumpy avocado (mostly). My primary interest is avocados and, since I have a 28-year-old mango tree, I'm learning more and more about mango varieties. I hope to get budwood of both to graft onto my avocado and mango trees. I generally like videos that 20 minutes long but your videos are so interesting that 5-55 minutes still keeps my attention.

I think you should stick with California varieties. They're generally better for California, as Florida varieties are better for Florida. I've lived in both places.

Thank you Paul! Looks awesome. How do you know when it's ripe? And, if you know, is it type A or B?

How do you feel about the Leona avocado? I keep seeing it at Home Depot but I can’t find any info about it

I got a Choquette, but my fruit is smaller. Also it was only a couple of weeks after Catalina, so not that late. Now I'm wondering if it was mislabeled and got something else. Both Choquette and Catalina were somewhat watery for me. In Miami, I started picking Catalina in late June, and the "Choquette" a few weeks later. I wish I could leave them on the tree longer, but the squirrels decimate them. I don't have a large tree, but I was done in early-mid July since I had to pick them in a hurry, sigh.

choquette early is usually watery, in fact most avocados are watery early june is a good tiem for Catalina. Alittle early for Choquette but that's my area, times are different near you

Hey Paul, I have an oro negro tree because you talk highly of it. and it seems to be cold tolerant. It is about 3 feet tall and I’m north of Tampa. Do you know where I can get my hands on an oro negro 🥑 to try it?

It’s pronounced SHOE CAT, not SHOE CWAT
@johnbanach387518 сағат бұрын
Charlie Poole and Alex Salazar say, "show-KET." I trust them. Introduced by R.D. Choquette of Miami in 1939. A French surname? Definitely not "SHOE-CAT" (as in footwear/pet).
