LYRICS: Some men need some killer weed, some men need cocaine Some men need some cactus juice, to purify the brain Some men need two women, some need alcohol Everybody needs a little something, but Lord I need it all To get my rocks off, get my rocks off Get my rocks off the mountain, and roll 'em on down the hill I may do you one time, and I may do you more I may turn you into something, that you ain't ready for I might want your body, and I might want your bread I might want your momma to come visit me instead And get my rocks off, get my rocks off Get my rocks off the mountain, and roll 'em on down the hill Sometimes I dream of chicks, to bring me ever lasting joy Sometimes I dream of animals, sometimes I dream of boys Sometimes I kill the living, sometimes I raise the dead Sometimes I say just screw it all, and crawl back into bed And get my rocks off, get my rocks off Get my rocks off the mountain, and roll 'em on down the hill

I did not know that you can play a bass solo and give a reach-around at the same time. I learn something new every day. These dudes were awesome, completely unbridled extremism. They left a stain on the bed sheets of music that just won't wash out.

I was lucky enough to catch them as a kid, in fact, it was my first show, back in 1977-78. They were the "opening act" but everyone was there to see THEM. The headliner was "Sha-Na-Na" and half the crowd bailed after Dr Hook. They were amazing, yet lighthearted. Shel even came out and played acoustic on Sylvia's Mother. I was blown away.

Even Ray Sawyer was astounded at just how high Dennis was - yet in ecstasy at how he managed to channel it into that bass. In that single moment, Dennis inspired Yngwie Malmsteen AND 'Animal' of the Muppets. It has been said that Keith Richards can't believe that Dennis survived that performance.

As a teenager living in S. Idaho on a Ranch...moved sprinkler pipe in the summer, picked rock, swathed hay, combined grain, baled, etc...and smoked a shitload of pot! My best friend lived with us during the summer and worked with me...and we would buy bongs, papers, ez-rollers, etc. and a shitload of albums...bought all of the Dr. Hook and Shel Silverstein, Cheech and Chong, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby shit we could get... pop a ton of popcorn, make lime koolaid and fire up the bowl...at lunch and at night...had to escape the pure crap we had to do daily! Thank god for Motocross on Sunday! Love these guys :)

Shel Silverstein doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves for his songwriting skills. Growing up in the 80s and 90s I only knew of him as a guy who wrote a few books of children's poetry (Where The Sidewalk Ends being the most well-known of those). 30-something years later I now appreciate him as a talented songwriter - this, "Sylvia's Mother", "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and "Boy Named Sue" among many others.

Don't think so! Ray Sawyer left the Dr Hook band in 1983. The band continued until 1985 with Locorreire as the sole frontman. After the band split up, Locorreire retained ownership of the band's name. Sawyer was granted a licence to tour as "Ray Sawyer of Dr Hook" or "Dr Hook featuring Ray Sawyer". He was never Dr Hook, that was the name of the original band! Even Dennis has to have a licence to use the Dr Hook name. It's all on the internet. Check it out.
