I demo the Fryette Power Station 2 with a Tweed Champ amp I built from a kit. The Fryette is one of the new breed of "reactive attenuators." The old style attenuators acted simply as a volume knob on your speaker, but would ruin your tone. This new type attempts to emulate the loud of an actual speaker. The cool thing about the Fryette is that it also contains a 50-watt tube amp, direct outs, impedance switches and EQ. (BTW, I have no affiliation with them.)

Excellent job. Simple and to the point without over talking. This is all I need to see and hear to recognize the features and benefits. I’m really glad you used a Champ amp because I’m seriously considering getting one. I’m researching DIY like Mojotone and comparing to buying a 5F1 champ amplifier.The Mojotone is a lower price point. Some feel it isn’t the best representation of a 5F1 Champ. I liked what I heard in your demo.

I have recently been researching attenuators, reactive loads for a studio recording application. The Fryette power station 2 is one of two pieces of gear I need to lower volume of a cranked tube amp. The other piece of gear is an cab sim. The Suhr A.C.E. and AD/A GCS-6 look like promising Analog cab sims. I have a bunch of I.R.s but I prefer physical/analog boxes to I.R.s. That Champ sounded great cranked to 12! Cheers.

Hi Dave, nice demo. I'm expecting my fryette PS-2A for next week. Just out of curiosity, is your amplifier's speaker cable long enough to connect directly to the Fryette PS-2A speaker output input or are you using a 1/4 Female/Female adapter as written in the manual? Or do you use a "male to female connector extension socket cable"? My combo amp's speaker cable is too short and I wanted something secure to connect to. thanks

Pretty sure I was using an adapter cable that I probably made myself, sinceI had just made the Champ and had all the tools.

Interesting video : I am living in appartement too and consider to play a valve amp there but do not want to disturb the neighbours. Do you have any experience with the boss tube amp expander ? I wonder how this compares with the fryette.

Wasn't aware of it but just looked it up. Must be pretty new. My PS2 cost $700 plus. The BOSS is $1300 on sweetwater dot com. Just read the specs real quick. Looks like it basically does what the PS2 does plus some other stuff. Sweetwater says "100W Tube Amp Companion with FX Loop, Attenuator, IR Loader, USB Interface, and Onboard FX." So looks 50 watts strong than the PS2. And the PS2 doesn'thave " IR Loader, USB Interface, and Onboard FX." Probably pretty awesome, but pricey. Those 3 extra options would be nice, but I'm pretty happy with my PS2 for now.

@@DavesGuitarPlanet A difference is that the fryette has real valves if I am not mistaken and the boss has a transistor poweramp.

Hi, but isn't it a problem to run a 50W amp into the speaker of the Champ? I know you're not going to dime it when playing in an apartment, but stilll... my Jensen speaker is rated for 25W...
@johnmiller9219
@johnmiller9219 4 жыл бұрын
the PS has a built in tube power amp. Does the power amp run when you're just attenuating? I wouldn't wanna run a 50 watt tube power amp unnecessarily all day long.

I THINK the unit still works as an attenuator with the power turned off. The way I've been using it lately though, I need to turn it on...because I'm running a line out to my recording interface, and that doesn't work with the power off. Here on youtube I watched a good demo before I bought it and he said it still worked with the power off. I still love it. :-) Using it with a boutique tube amp now.

@@DavesGuitarPlanet With the power off it still presents a load to the guitar amp but it will not drive a speaker, because of course the PS power amp is off. The manual doesn't spell it out but I should mention you should not use this "Silent Mode" (Fryettes term) with any amp that exceeds 100 watts because you need power to drive the fan for high levels of attenuation. From the manual: USING SILENT MODE Silent Mode allows you to use the Power Station as a silent adjustable reactive load for quiet direct recor- ding or when sending a live amp signal to front of house with no speaker cab connected. In this mode it is not necessary to power up the Power Station. You don’t even need to plug in the power cord. The Voicing switches, Low Pass Filter switch, FX Send (along with the FX Level switch), and the Balanced and Unba- lanced Line Outputs all operate with no AC power applied.

Hey, do you have any input on the Fryette Ps-100?
@DavesGuitarPlanet
@DavesGuitarPlanet 4 жыл бұрын
The only Fryette product I know anything about is my PS2.
@rixterprime2317
@rixterprime2317 3 жыл бұрын
The PS-100 is basically two PS2's in one box. This solves the problem encountered when the settings used for your bridge pickup doesn't sound so great when you switch to the neck p/u. So it's a two-channel PS2 for an extra $200. This is very important for the gigging musician but most home users will do just fine with the PS2. I don't know if Fryette did anything to tweak the tone when they developed the PS100.

How noisy is the fan on the PS?
@DavesGuitarPlanet
@DavesGuitarPlanet Жыл бұрын
Usually extremely quiet. However, after I'd had mine for a bit, when I turned it on it would make a small noise which then went away after a bit. Actually, I sold it when I left Thailand over a year ago, but that's what I recall. I loved it, but had that tiny complaint.

I still like it. Several new devices have come out in the mean time though I think...like tube amps that have reactive attenuators built in...plus other stuff, like various interfaces, IR (impulse response) stuff to emulate different speakers/cabinets/etc., I think. Good luck.

@@michael_caz_nyc which Princeton do you have. I have a Fender PRRI. I like the amp a lot. The 5F1 has its own voice which I also like very much. I’m thinking I’d probably still keep the Princeton. I’m interested in what you like or dislike about a 5F1 Champ.

He’s demoing the sound in great detail which is what most people are seeking. Contact Fryette directly with tech questions - if he spent time going over where cables go you’d have a bunch of people commenting on how he wasted their time covering the instruction manual.
