The 1978 BMW R 100 S is a vintage icon that represents BMW's engineering precision and timeless design. With its distinctive half-fairing and clean lines, this bike bridges the gap between classic touring comfort and sporty performance. Riding the R 100 S is a journey back in time, delivering an experience that blends mechanical simplicity with the sophistication of BMW's air-cooled boxer engine.
The engine is a 980cc air-cooled boxer twin that produces smooth, linear power. It offers a distinct rumble and low-end torque that makes rolling on the throttle a satisfying experience. Though it doesn't scream high performance by today's standards, the R 100 S delivers ample power for relaxed cruising or spirited rides on twisty backroads. The 5-speed gearbox shifts smoothly, though it has a mechanical feel typical of older BMWs, requiring a deliberate approach.
Handling is balanced and predictable, thanks to the low center of gravity created by the horizontally opposed engine. The bike feels stable through corners, with suspension that leans toward comfort over outright sportiness. The telescopic front forks and twin rear shocks soak up road imperfections admirably, though aggressive riders may find the setup soft by modern standards. One of the standout features of the R 100 S is its exceptional comfort. The seat is wide and supportive, making long-distance rides manageable, and the riding position is upright, with handlebars positioned for a relaxed grip. The half-fairing not only enhances the bike's aesthetic appeal but also provides some wind protection, especially at highway speeds.
The braking system, featuring dual front disc brakes and a rear disc, is adequate for the bike's weight and power but requires a firm hand. Compared to modern systems, the brakes feel underwhelming, but they’re consistent and reliable when used correctly. What truly sets the 1978 R 100 S apart is its character. This bike exudes a sense of craftsmanship that’s hard to find today. The engine's sound, the analog gauges, and even the feel of the controls all contribute to an immersive riding experience. Maintenance is straightforward, as the air-cooled engine and shaft drive are built for longevity and ease of service.
For anyone seeking a connection to the golden era of motorcycling, the 1978 BMW R 100 S delivers in spades. It’s not just a motorcycle; it’s a piece of history that rewards the rider with every mile.
