Wow, thanks for such a great in-depth analysis, which is still relevant today in 2021. I am looking at a used D800 or a used D810. The price gap is still there in the second hand market. I could get a D800 plus get a lens (albeit it would have to be a second hand lens), for the price of just a used D810 body.

Thanks so much for an interesting and informative video, especially at the end. I am a still photographer contemplating a full-frame DSLR, and briefly owned a D600. Nice images but the build quality left me a bit cold. The question I was really looking to answer was, "slightly used D800 at $1600, or D810 at twice the price". You very effectively answered the question for me. Thanks again.

I'm still using the D800 that I purchased from B&H in 2012, I didn't upgrade to the D810 because I didn't see enough of a difference in reviews to justify the cost of a new camera. I use it with a Tamron 35 f/1.8 VC or Tamron 45 f/1.8 VC. I watched your review of the Tamron lenses before making my purchase from B&H. Appreciate all your informative and honest reviews!

Great great review. This is the kind of review I was looking for. An unbiased, real use perspective. Best Buy just dropped the price of the D800 to $2299 (today I believe) so that's $1000 less...and now debating whether to get the D800 or spend the extra $1000 for the D810. I sold by D300s and D700 and going with the D7100 + D800/D810 combo....two cents anyone?

The thing you must consider about the ISO 64 is that it is native on the D810. Canon 5D3 has ISO 50 but its an extended mode. This means that on the canon, you'll get less light to the sensor but not less noise. The Nikon will actually have less noise with 64 ISO being native to the sensor and not extended.

Great breakdown, lots of great insight! I noticed on the D800 that Anti Aliasing pops up in scenes with water and or stairs, have you noticed anything like that with the D810?
@phaskellhall
@phaskellhall 10 жыл бұрын
Yes on some of our tests you could see the moire in people's hair (especially shaggy hair like mine) on the D800....the D810 shows very little of this anti aliasing now.
@klasbo
@klasbo 10 жыл бұрын
Patrick Hall (I can't reply to both so I'm replying to Patrick..) You've mixed aliasing with anti-aliasing. In case passers-by want some kind of explanation: Aliasing is what happenes when your sampling points are too far away from each other (line skipping, in this case), causing "jaggedness". Anti-aliasing is anything to mitigate this, eg optical low-pass filter (blurs the image before it is sampled, reducing jaggies at the cost of resolution), or supersampling (in this case binning could be used (combining values from several pixels, instead of skipping lines))
@BowlesImages
@BowlesImages 10 жыл бұрын
klasbo Resizing a large native image for a monitor or even a specific size JPEG can show moire that is not in the actual RAW file. I see a lot more moire from resizing than I see in the NEF at 100%. If you view at 100% and there is no moire, the moire was created through resizing. Viewing on a standard monitor at normal resolution involves resizing.
@klasbo
@klasbo 10 жыл бұрын
Eric Bowles Yes, downsizing is almost always a tradeoff between softness and moiré. Using Lanczos or sinc resampling (maybe with some pre-blur and post-sharpening) usually yeild the best results, but the best algorithm often needs to be chosen on a case-by-case basis. But I find very few image editing programs let you choose, at least easily. As long as the algorithm isn't absolutely terrible, a 50%, 33%, 25% (etc) downsize shouldn't moiré.

We own two copies of both of those lenses. What would you like to know? At this stage Lee and I actually shoot more with the Tamron 24-70 because unlike any Nikon offering it has VR for stabilized video. For all practical purposes I don't think there is any difference in image quality between it and the Nikkor. I'd go Tamron all the way!

Fstoppers Fans ...I'm honestly on the opinion that the tamron 24-70 performs optimally on the d800e more than the d810. ..something that was done to the new sensor is greatly affecting its usually flawless performance. Maybe my bias but I do have over 30 years semi professional experience.

great review. there are cameras with " full electronic shutter" (both front & rear curtain); these electronic shutters are completely silent and are used in churches and on film sets. slow motion, 120fps: an iphone has a very small, 12Mp sensor. this means, the amount of data that is recorded is relatively small. when you increase the frame rate, as well as the size of the sensor , the Mp count and the bit depth, an astronomical amount of data now needs to be recorded in fractions of a second. some dslrs & mirrorless cameras will compensate for this by decreasing the quality of the recorded video file, reducing it below 1080, or cropping the image size; eg, full frame to aps-c (super 35), or even to super16 (micro 4/3). also, the buffer and processors just can't handle all that data at once. this vast amount of data can't be written fast enough to standard memory cards, at standard write speeds. cinema cameras write files at higher bit rates, like 50Mb/s (a standard for 4k), and even then can't record 120fps at 1080. cameras with c-fast or xqd can write information faster to cards and record 120fps at super 35, but usually only for 8-10seconds. even the high end movie cameras struggle to record high data slow motion footage. the RED Epic Dragon can record raw in 6k at 24fps and 30fps, but never 6k at 120fps, and RED even has a proprietary compression that allows high data to be recorded to a memory card, albeit, a special, proprietary RED memory card. I have shot 80fps at 4k on the RED, but not 4k at 120fps; for 120fps, I usually go down to 2k or 1080, depending on compression and other variables. some cameras will allow video to be recorded to an external video footage recorder or hard drive via hdmi out, but often it's uncompressed footage with giant file sizes, which can be impossible to edit, even with fast computers. there is no one camera for every situation. most people buy a general purpose camera and rent a slow motion camera, like the fs700, but even then, it maxes out at 240fps at 1080 for only 8 seconds. unless of course, you use a phantom camera which can record ridiculous frames rates (still for only short periods of time), but that camera is difficult to operate, even importing footage is difficult. recently released dslr cameras have xqd or c-fast card slots, so we may see 120fps at 1080 & 36Mp footage in future dslrs, but not this year. canon: for canon cameras, iso 160 is sharper than iso 100. the 5Diii can only recorded video to the compact flash card slot, not the sd slot; the sd card slot is not class 10, u3, UHS-I and video will just stop recording if you use the sd slot. the nikon d810 can record video to both card slots. record all day: the GH4 can record for more than 8 hours at a time, but again, smaller sensor (micro 4/3, half the size of full frame), lower megapixels, etc. what dynamic range did you set for the sony fs700? makes a difference. did you record in rec709? s-log2? prores444? note: the fs700 has a smaller sensor (aps-c/super35) which affects comparison results.

I have a question for Lee & Patrick. For Weddings, what is better? D810 or D750? I am thinking D810 might be problematic because of file size? (OK there is RAW "S" but does that even work?) Seems to me the D750 might be a more sensible option. Would you both choose the D810 anyways? Thanks. :)

I agree with you on the changes in camera models. I have 2 D750s and I really like them and would like a D850, but the price is too high. Cameras are going the way of cells, too many extra frills on them that you don't need just to say they "upgraded" them. I am looking at a possible D810 but then I just read rumors flying of a D760. When will it all end? Never mind mirrorless !

Nice video, but I haven't heard any word on the upgrade toward expeed 4 processor. This very upgrade may look minor but it's NOT. with the d810 we get et much better white balance and colors are way more accurate, especially considering the skin tones ! I have taken 300 000 pictures with my d800. The first time I shot with a d810, I immediately spotted the difference considering white balance and skin tone. Two different world I'd say, it really blew my mind. I hope I don't sound over enthusiastic but the difference isn't just subtle, it gave me a great satisfaction. I did consider first buying a used D800, exactly for the reasons you gave, but then I know that my work flow will be much more efficient with a d810, and the end result will just be more professional. I don't understand how you could miss that. Cheers

I have been reading and going through the manual to figure out a question I had. I wanted to buy a D4 to be able to shoot at 16mp for events. Well I read that the D810 Small RAW was 16mp so I bought it to shoot the wedding formals at 36mp and the candids at 16mp with small RAW. You said that the D810 small raw files shoot at 9mp. The manual says its about half the size of the native size. I'm not sure if your information about small raw being 9mp is accurate. I just received my D810 and will have to confirm this.

Came from a nikon d7000 and I found at the same (basically) light set up the 6d needs more iso. *dynamic range I miss it a lot, besides one or two things about controls (hold button + dial). On the other hand as a tool I´m getting to know it, so hope canon delivers a better package on the 6d mark ii or I´ll jump again to nikon. I wanted to try canon, give it a shot. quality wise it´s solid, the rubber on the handgrip has more texture and feels a lot more expensive than my ex d7000. Anyway I´ll stick to nikon d750 if you can afford it. sorry for the delay. hope it helps you out.

I know it's the hip thing now to have multiple camera bodies from different manufacturers (and film now too) but honestly I wouldn't want to shoot a wedding with all those different options. I find it way easier to know all my cameras mount the same lenses, same batteries, same flash systems, etc etc. The reality is if a minister or church officiant says they don't want any still photography during the service then at this point I simply obey their request.

You seem to be one of the photographers not understanding why there are limitations. Silent (electronic) shutter is not yet available for 36 MP cameras, since reading out that amount of data in about 1/250s is currently not possible. On 12 MP this is possible now, see A7S - and since that camera does not have that legacy flappy mirror either it is absolutely silent. 30 min video limitation is due to european toll. The reason why there is no 1080p120 - well the amount of data is too much for SD or CF cards these days. It would be possible with XQD, but that card is still not standard. (Your iPhone has lower quality and has an internal faster memory.)
@FStoppers
@FStoppers 10 жыл бұрын
Why not use the internal buffer for storage first? I believe the D4s uses the internal buffer when shooting 10 fps at 16mp. Don't you think it is just silly that a tiny cell phone has the technology to provide pretty usable 120 footage while a $3000-$6000 DSLR cannot? I don't think it's a hardware limitation
@klasbo
@klasbo 10 жыл бұрын
Fstoppers Fans You could, and this is how Magic Lantern does raw video. The problem is continuous shooting to (relatively speaking) slow memory cards. Not everyone will have 100+MB/s cards, and dealing with consumer confusion caused by some features not working as expected might be considered too much of a hassle? Who knows.
@Lofote
@Lofote 10 жыл бұрын
Fstoppers Fans You would run out of internal memory eventually. Or you would need to use huge amounts of GB of flash memory inside the camera. A phone has that because a cell phone nowadays is a general multipurpose computing machine just like a PC. A DSLR or even the modern mirrorless cameras are not (yet?) that, they are still dedicated stills and motion capture machines. Ok, the Sony cameras nowadays even have apps. but it is still the beginnging. And whoever spends USD 3000-6000 in a DSLR for high-end video use instead of a dedicated video camera like the FS700 that is BUILT for video... sorry, that is not understandable for me. Oh and the picture quality of a phone is not even remotely comparable to the mirrorless or legacy DSLR camera systems with large sensors.

***** 1. I understand raw and jpeg are different file types, but what are the differences 2. What are "stops" 3.sync speed 4.DSLR, how it is different from a regular digital camera 5.power pack 6.bit rates...since I would like to take photos of cars at the track I assume this is important because he mentions it for sports 7.small raw vs regular raw 8.Last thing would be a recommendation for a camera that does continuous shooting...I think that would be a must for high speed objects
@RLfilmz
@RLfilmz 10 жыл бұрын
FELiPES101 1. RAW is what the name implies. its an uncompressed image with very little processing. it allows you to have more room to control your image in post. to see the difference take 2 images with a dslr, one raw and one jpeg. then push contrast all the way up and notice how the raw file falls apart less. 2. a stop is a measurement of light. f stops and t stops are variations on the measurement. for photography f stops are the norm and for videography t stops are the norm. smaller stop number (for the lens) means more light but also shallower depth of field. in terms of ISO its just measuring relative light. ISO relates to film and determines the film or sensor sensitivity to light. a higher number means more sensitivity and thus a brighter image. 3. sync speed is a flash term. most flashes sync up to 1/250 but cameras have limitations (unless youre talking hypersync but thats an entirely different beast). for instance i have 3 canon flashes that will shoot up to 1/250 but my 6D will only sync up to 1/180. 4. i assume you mean a camera phone or a point and shoot. a dslr gives you control over all of your settings which lets you control the image. put your DSLR in auto or A mode and you essentially have a very expensive point and shoot. 5. power packs are batteries. they usually refer to studio strobes since shoemount flashes have internal batteries. 6. bit rates. higher is better. a bit is a measurement of information. more bits is more information. the higher the bitrate the better the quality of your image. for instance if you have 2 DSLRs and one is 36MP with a 10mbps bit rate and one is 22MP 30mbps, the 22MP camera will have 3x the amount of information and in return, detail. for shooting cars, which i do on occasion at track days and shows, bit rate is important, but image stabilization is more important if youre shooting moving cars. example of something i shot with IS: static.squarespace.com/static/5346bff8e4b05301dbf34215/534777a8e4b029dc12be2883/5388bcd8e4b09e20aac82d6d/1401470174500/IMG_1205-Edit.jpg?format=750w 7. these just refer to file size. MP are relevant if youre printing or have a size you need to fit. if youre giving someone a disk to print 4x6 you dont really need to worry about your MP so you can shoot small RAW and save some space on your hard drives. i personally shoot more video than photo so ive never used small RAW or anything similar before. I have lots of storage space so its just not a concern. 8. depending on your budget and whether or not you want full frame or crop sensor, you have a few options. the 7D (mk2 should be out soon so you might want to wait) is a good option for a crop sensor especially for cars. the 5D mk3 is good too if you have the budget and its a full frame camera. and if money is no object than a 1Dx is ideal. im a canon shooter so those are all canon cameras but if you prefer nikon the D700, D800/810 and D4s are the nikon equivalents of those canon cameras. for shooting cars you want something that has a decent continuous shooting mode, a good MP count so you can shoot wider and crop later and a nice fast SHARP lens. for car show shooting get a circular polarizer filter to help control reflections in the paint.

Oh, one more teensie weensie comment. at 11:00 you mentioned the new D810 can do 30 min... as opposed to the previous model. Your D800's can also shoot 30 min... you just have to adjust the bit rate to normal. Same goes with the D810. When it is on high, it is 20:00. When it is on Normal, it is 29:59.

Why even spend that much money when you can get the Sony A7R that is basically a D800E sensor brand new for around 2000 US bucks or Less on ebay (around 1800$ I saw on ebay) . Pair that with some zeiss glass and you have a stellar combo that's hard to beat for the price and the size of the camera. The other thing is that if you already have existing glass for Canon or Nikon you can use an adapter and get get great results. I'm going for the A7R!
@phaskellhall
@phaskellhall 10 жыл бұрын
It just seems a round about way to go Sony and then add adapters to still use your nikon glass. The advantages of VR (IS, OS, VC) in lenses for video is huge and autofocus is nice to have for video/photo hybrid shooting. I've never understood the folks that completely change camera systems just because one little feature is better. Once you invest in a ton of glass and accessories it's a lot easier to just stick with the main system.

If life was like that, you never move out of your house because all of your shit is already in that house. Its moving with the technology and having new possibilities. If Image Stabilization is that important you can use a tripod or a steadicam.
@FStoppers
@FStoppers 10 жыл бұрын
Alex Brown For anyone who has shot in the field or at fast paced events like weddings, having a tripod or spending 30 mins stabilizing a steadicam for smooth footage isn't ideal. VR is so easy to do and make the footage look SOOOO much better that I wouldn't trade to any system if it required giving up VR. I haven't tested Sony's in camera VR (they still do that right?) but if it is as useful as lens VR then that would be a nice feature. I remember a Nikon or Canon rep telling me how much more stable VR was in the lens vs near the sensor and it made sense at the time. Imagine trying to balance a 10' rod either at the balancing node in the middle verse 1' away from the end.....that was the comparison he gave to explain why a VR element in the middle of the lens path was more efficient than the Sony stabilization but maybe he was wrong?
@lightleaksofficial
@lightleaksofficial 10 жыл бұрын
That's true. Although they will be releasing glass with in lens stabilization for the FE mount. They will be zooms. It will take a while to get a full line up of lenses (I.E 2.8 70-200) but they already have a 24-70 f4 with in lens optical stabilization. Zeiss thinks that stabilization has an overall softening of the image, so they leave it out for the best quality. I do under stand that image stabilization is huge for video but there are ways around it, But it may take a year or two or another generation of the Sony a7 and A7R to catch up with Canon or Nikon for the most part.
