Theres this thing called auto pilot that levels the plane out and flies it in a straight line for 11 hours and on the last 10 mins he lines the plane up with the runway and lands. So during the 11 hours he gets on with his life. Haha, yeh thats how it works

I was hoping this would be a more realistic route than for the SFO-LHR flight you posted. Straight off, I noticed that you chose a departure from 09 R, which would indicate a wind heading from the east, which is rare (less than one in ten flights take off or land in this direction, as the prevailing wind in southern UK is from W, or SW). The usual take off would have been on 27 R. Furthermore, you'd need to be on a NE heading of 057º and fly to at least 58ºN, up near Novgorod before heading to SE for a true geodesic route. Also your landing was from the east, requiring a loop back over Victoria Harbour to land on 25 L or R (I forget which). I have flown into Hong Kong many dozens of times, into both the old Kai Tak airport in Kowloon and into Chep Lap Kok, on Lantau. In almost every case, I landed from west to east, on either 07 L or 07 R. The reason that most landings into HKIA are in this direction is because the weather systems and wind move from east to west, especially during the tropical cyclone season, when typhoons are prevalent. In any case, it's a great effort to post this, though again, I'd have preferred to see some cockpit views. As someone else suggested, perhaps you should consider doing a round-the world, or at least a return flight, making an effort to keep to a realistic route and using a recognisable approach pattern. Also try avoiding no-go airspaces. So now you've done LHR - HKIA, you could maybe do HKIA - Sydney next, then Sydney - Auckland, Auckland-Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires - Miami, Miami - LHR. Good luck!

Thanks. This is really interesting, as I'm not a local I wasn't aware about Hong Kong's weather system. The last time I flew into Hong Kong we headed west during our approach, so I guess I got lucky. My routes are based on flight tracking data (flightaware.com/) and I aim to follow them as closely as possible. However, when choosing a particular route I also consider whether there's anything interesting to see and in this case, having a look at the city during approach was definitely key.

@@FSWindowSeat I would be surprised if the flight tracking data showed a similar route to the one you used on the SFO-LHR flight, as it would've been very indirect and cost the airline thousands in extra fuel. As you didn't show the route from LHR to HKIA I couldn't tell, though I can say that the usual route would start on a NNE heading, taking you as far north as Novgorad. That heading gradually changes to the SE, until you'd be flying on an almost SSE heading (170º) by the time you approached the South China coast. Then it's simply a left turn to descend over Zhuhai and the Pearl River estuary into Chep Lap Kok. I think it's worth trying to stick to the most realistic routes and approaches, even so far as avoiding certain airspaces for either geopolitical or technical issues, weather, or for reasons of ATC competence (I had written in a journal about avoiding Ukrainian airspace on one of my virtual flights less than one hour before I heard news of the downing of MH17. I realised that, unlike the pilots flying the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER, I had no financial officer breathing down my neck, pushing me into taking the most fuel-efficient route.) In any case, I look forward to seeing your flights on a higher resolution sim.

I really wish pmdg would make for xplane 10. I've had fsx for years running on a large sim with projectors. I switched to xplane 10 and I can't even imagine using fsx again. the graphics and customizations and the nature to which planes behave is nearly indentical to real life.
