srinath started.in 1990 , he was part of the national team but couldn't play much but 1991 he made it playing with greats like kapil dev manoj prabhakar. srinath became a household name back in the early 90s we were staying in dombivili east that time doordarshan cabletv was new that time . no match wud be complete if srinath or kumble never bowled. one of the ranji players who faced srinaths bowling used to tell how fearful his bowling can be the ball wud literally reach ur head if u don't duck on time . by 2000 his performance started going down but he was still part of the team in most matches by 2000s new bowlers like ashish nehra zaheer khan agarkar since 98 were picking up . srinath was rested most times when the new comers were picking up he waited till 2003 worldcup where selectors gave him a final call & honorably he played the last worldcup n last final match which was first time India reached worldcup final after 20years but even though India couldn't win srinath took 16wickets in the last worldcup n retired honourably . after retirement he took up referring with ICC, umpiring coaching plus now he's part of Karnataka cricket along with kumble etc . srinath was the most feared fast bowler from India after kapil dev history will remember this tall gentleman fast bowler forever

Education is important yes. But that's what prevented him from becoming a great bowler. To be that cricket has to be your whole & soul. I wonder if it is true that education has to be the number one priority. Because I doubt if he is surviving on his qualification at present, so do so many of the recently retired cricketers who are also educated. Also what about the Pakistani bowlers? The situation in that country is worse than ours & yet their fast bowlers are able to give undivided attention to their game. & although he may still be one of our greats one wonders how many other international teams would he have walked into. Certainly not Australia, South Africa & perhaps even England, Pakistan & Sri Lanka. For the first two teams not even as a support bowler & for the others maybe as one with some difficulty.

It's more in context of India, because sports still can't be taken as a profession. If you watch his other interviews, he clearly says that we don't have a sporting culture.Nothing prevented him from becoming great, he is one of the best Indian fast bowler, has 315 ODI wickets.
@sidb0206
@sidb0206 4 жыл бұрын
@@harshajila1984 it well can be taken as a profession. People like Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Dravid etc played in the same era and became greats. Are we then saying that sporting culture is there only for batsmen and not for bowlers in India?! Even Kapil Dev was a far more effective bowler than him age for age. He might've taken 315 wickets in ODIs but it remains that despite being the number one bowler in the side he was more often than not a liability in the slog overs. It was to such an extent that one of his captains (Ganguly) couldn't help pointing at his experience publicly when he was found wanting. Whoever has excelled in sports did it by giving it their all, not by thinking what they'd do after retiring at the time of their debut! Besides it's common knowledge that thanks to the cricket crazy fans in India both the board and players make more than their counterparts from other nations. And yet they and we think they can't give it their all while being professional.

@@sidb0206 He says both are important, education shouldn't be sidelined at the cost of cricket; Sports still hasnt evolved as much as it has in Western countries; so keeping this as a context his comment makes sense. Does India actively support sports as a career like they do in western countries or Australia? Herein i will have to join a private academy, but is sports as a profession part of the curriculum? I hope with the new National Education Policy, things might change.. Also seems like you have mis-construed the comment, reason why he says education is imprtant is because not everyone can become a Sachin, Gavaskar, Dravid or Kumble. In a country of 1.3 Billion even if 5% decide to take up cricket as a profession can we accommodate all of them in the National or State team. When there is so much competition for those 11 places in the team, we always need to have a back-up if things dont fall in place as expected. Thats why he says both are important; no matter how hard you try sometimes there are few who are better than us. Sachin was a prodigy, but can everyone become Sachin? Likewise Kapil Dev was maybe perhaps the best fast bowler produced by India, but the problem with all these legends is they dont know when to hang their boots and push their retirement; same happened with Kapil, he was not at his best post 91, but continued till 94 to become the highest wicket taker. Unfortunately for Srinath it meant being out of the Test team during these years. Yes Gavaskar, Dravid, Kumble, Sachin all have been successul, but how many of them can replicate what these have done? not to Forget Kumble was a BE, infact he was very good at studies...Dravid is a graduate and has completed an year of MBA and Gavaskar is a graduate. Education is very important because that can always be a back up if the sports career doesn't take-off as intended. Education shouldnt be neglected is what he says, can we take that risk of discontinuing studies in high-school to concentrate fully on Cricket. It can be cricket or any field, its only the successful who get highlighted, but there might be many who maynot be able to scale-up to the intended level; circumstances like this, education plays an important role. He heeded to Dadas request and made himself available for the 2003 WC; am sure if he were an okay bowler why would Dada request him to postpone his retirement. Kapil during his peak was the best, but during the end he prolonged, nowhere he can be considered better than Srinath during fag end of his career Also in the New Zealand series, just before the WC he was the highest wicket taker for India. Also he along with Zaheer has the highest number of wickets in WCs for an Indian bowler, plus his home record is very good in tests considering the flat pitches India used to roll-out for the spinners. Problem is post 95 India usually used to operate with just one Fast bowler in Tests and most of the time he was the lone fast bowler; like they say pace bowlers hunt in pairs , unfortunately for him that wasnt the case. We had so many bowlers but none as effective as him during that period. You should probably read what Shaun Pollock had to say about him,, am sure he wouldnt have praised him if he were not a successful bowler. Indian pitches were always custom made for spinners and being the only fast bowler he was over bowled by the captains resulting in the injuries that he sustained; also most of the matches he used operate as a lone speedster, having a pair makes lotsa of difference. Pacers always hunt in pairs. P.s. Are you a Manglorean? :D kzbin.info/www/bejne/oavbiZWuj6eokJY - guess you might have watched it, its a good one.

@@harshajila1984 I agree not everyone cannot become a Sachin, but that's what separates the great from the not so ones. They don't become great just like that. More often than not it is the result of hard work. I didn't say everyone has to be of his stature to be called good. He was great - others can be just good & not mediocre like how this man was quite widely (& may be to some extent rightly) regarded by many. As for Dravid being a graduate & MBA, Gavaskar being a graduate etc this man was already into his final year of engineering when he made into the Indian team. So his position was not much different. If the argument is still that sports doesn't guarantee a good life in India what about his peers from Pakistan at the time (Wasim and Waqar) and Vaas? All the 3 did much more and gained more respect from the cricketing fraternity. Please note that this man graduated from his engineering within a year of making his debut. I'm talking about making little progress after that as a fast bowler after that in a career that went on for a decade. How his career shaped in comparison to his peers from other countries & I am not even mentioning Glen McGrath here who was of his age, started his career 2 years later than him & became a frontline bowler 2 years after him too. I don't know about sports academies being public overseas & private in India but several ones like the MRF pace foundation which has been in the country for more than 3 decades now (without coming up with anything substantial and of which this man was part too) does not charge you anything exorbitant & purely selects boys for training after assessing their ability. You say the wickets in India don't favour quick bowlers and that this could be a deterrent for him too. But if you look at his record it's far better in India than overseas. How does your view of Indian pitches working against him explain that? If you're a good bowler you do well in both favourable and unfavourable conditions - not do well in unfavourable conditions (home) and do poorly in favourable conditions (abroad). The only country where he performed reasonably well outside India is South Africa. We in India sometimes come up with this funny argument that if one of our bowlers does well In India than abroad the he must be a very good bowler because of this reason. But those who say this conveniently overlook the obvious - his performance was more needed abroad than at home where we probably took more beating in the 80s & 90s than any other team. If reports say Ganguly asked him to stay on till the 2003 WC, there is a interview of him when he retired later that year that he wanted to be part of the team that toured Australia in 2003-04. So there you have some conflicting stories. He did well in the WC 2003 (although was taken to the cleaners in both matches against Australia - both in the preliminary & final) & on the tour of NZ before that in which he played only in the ODIs. But these good performances compare against many, many instances of being ineffective or an embarrassment of sorts when needed. I can give at least 10 times instances of those, if not more. I know of Shaun Pollock's comments on him but it's normal for bowlers of other teams to say good things about their rivals. They choose at times not to be too critical which can be at times for just being polite or at other times with a vested interest - to keep the guy basking in glory & not improve! Even Donald had such compliments on him but these 2 were the ones who used to rain bouncers on him whenever he batted & Pollock was the one who broke his finger for the second time which quickened his exit from the game! It's common knowledge that fast bowlers think twice about bouncing their counterparts if they at least have some respect for their abilities for the fear of getting it back! So there you go. Besides not many are aware of what Richard Hadlee had to say about him after we played in a one day tournament in NZ in early 1995. He outrightly described him as a average bowler. Besides Brett Lee had great compliments to say on Munaf Patel - we all know what he then turned out to be! Yes, I am of your kind, but not a Mangalorean - I am a Udupian! That's why all this disappointment in this guy who was from our state!

@@sidb0206 haha good to know you are from ooru :) i wont rate him better than the W's and Mc Grath; they were legends. Vaas was also a better bowler than him. What worked for them is they both could swing the ball either ways; but JS couldnt as it was physically impossible for him to bowl outswinger ( apparently its a physical problem, because of which he couldnt bowl outswinger). Definitely not a mediocre bowler; he has the best ODI stats for an Indian bowler and his Test average is next to Kapil Dev. Anyways its a never ending one :) Do you speak Tulu?
