I watched this 1.5 hours delayed on the vod. It was such a tough run, I was yelling at the TV, please don't buy hacking, get the defence drone. And at the end, as others have said, I was hoping you'd stick to the shield hack. It was so unfair. Let's hope this is the streak we're on now

Damn so sorry to see this streak go. I feel like you have the skill and decision consistency needed for it, just need that rng to hit a bit better. If you dont mind me saying i feel like chat makes you second guess yourself far too much where you get less confident if its a bad start. Yeah you get good strats and a bunch of recommendations but you dont need chat and it might be better to pay less attention to it especially early sectors. Love the vids anyways, you will get it soon im sure. Good luck.

Agreed. Mike Hoply and Sleeping Dragon are great for event outcomes or how long an O2 kill will take or something like that but what works for them on the boss like the bizarre cloak hack attempt which imo killed the run, clearly doesn’t work for Rand. He’s skillful enough that he should be able to trust in himself. I’m still sad it went down that way. He almost certainly would have got thru phase 1 at least sticking to shield hack from the get go.

@@Shredinsocal I think it's rather unfair to blame SD and me for Rand's loss. Rand has relied a great deal on expert players in chat to help explain new ideas to him and improve his consistency, partly because he doesn't have the patience to do any practice or "homework" beyond just playing. He frequently asks chat to tell him what to do; whereas I have always encouraged him to make his own decisions, and to develop his own approach to the game. I try really hard to present ideas in a fairly neutral way, rather than "telling him what to do". My aim is to help him learn, not to backseat him. Maybe you should watch the Twitch VOD chat to see what the actual discussion was, rather than assuming that SD and I are bossing Rand around. You say he "almost certainly" would have beaten phase 1 if he started with a shields hack. You have no basis for that claim. A shields hack has little use in an ion-stacking build, except maybe to chase crew kills or delay missile repairs. It's a complicated situation. Even I'm not sure what the best hack is here, and I would certainly have taken a long time thinking it through if I were playing. He (and doubtless you) didn't even consider the possibility of an evasion hack or a missiles hack. Rand played very well to get this far, and we were all rooting for him to win. But he also made several critical mistakes. Losing two crew put him in a bad position, and that could have been avoided by (1) turning on the medbay, (2) not venting the medbay, or (3) hacking teleporter to get the Mantis off his ship. The Flagship fight was very difficult but he also misplayed it. In the first attempt he wasn't charging the ion charger -- that only happened in the second attempt, after I mentioned it. He also left his Slug sitting in a hacked room doing nothing, which wastes half his total repair ability. In the second attempt, he was intent on crew kills even after getting his shields hacked, and as a result didn't turn on the combat drone until it was too late. I feel bad for Rand losing this streak. I thought this would be the one to break 28. He's done really well to get this far. He has raised his level of play dramatically, and much of that (but not all of it!) has come from listening to ideas from better players who are willing to help him. Ultimately though, the player has to make the decisions. Chat can't and shouldn't play the game for him.

This was an amazing display of skill regardless of the outcome one. With some of the worst stores I’ve ever seen! I’m so sad for you but also really frustrated at whoever convinced you to do cloak hack!! Shield hack is what you’re familiar with and have so much success with. I remember another weird hack recommendation that derailed a run like this…And shield hack was clearly working on the second try. Shield hack on the first try with your engines hacked and I think you had a damn decent shot 😔

I think he allows himself to be backseated by guys who have completely different styles (and are experienced playing those styles) and then unsurprisingly struggles to execute the new strategy cos he doesnt have the muscle memory to do it no-pause. I get that he's taking on advice from people he considers experts but it seems counter-productive to do it during a run.

Rough one. I have no clue what could have been done better. You made the most of the shitty weapons and the one free crew you got. Remember that ftl isnt balanced around hardmode, or no pause, or getting consistant wins. To go for all three sets you above the rest

This is without a doubt the worst RNG I have ever seen in FTL. Every single possible bad event/bad outcome happened. Massive amounts of direct counters to your builds, the worst stores I have ever seen this game generate, and the final boss turned into Neo. The fact this run even got to the final boss is a testament your skill with no pause.
