Thank you, Neil! I'm not very tech-minded and this is exactly the sort of instruction I need - simple, clear, and step-by-step. Much appreciated!

Do you have experiences or cecommendations for portable FTP/SFTP Server-Devices? Neil, I would like to use the ftp/sftp functionality of my 5D MarkIV to do some kind of quality checks during a shooting. So I'm interested in expirences / recommendations on potential portable devices which can be used to do a quality check on the pictures during a shooting (outdoor and in studio) I would be happy to hear from you.

I keep getting a 'No response from DNS server' when trying to setup FTP. What could this mean ?

I would like to know how to make the ftp app send photos to lightroom and lightroom apply a treatment and save how?
@neilturner8409 Жыл бұрын
I'm afraid that I don't use Lightroom myself and so cannot answer that. In general you would need to have the application that you want to use on the receiving server and employ a watch folder so that your images arrive in a certain place and the actions that you require are automatically employed. We have done this very successfully using Photo Mechanic to apply captions and rename files before saving them to a second location. This was on a Mac rather than a PC but the concept should be much the same.

Great tutorial! Are there just 3 sets available? What if I have more than 3 clients and need to have configured more than 3 sets?
@neilturner84094 жыл бұрын
You can only have three at any one time. It is one of the disadvantages the 5D MkIV has against the 1DX MkII which has twenty.

This is the first and best explanation I have seen on ftp to server. I would like to use this feature on location photoshoots to an Ipad in the hands of the client standing next to me or back in his office for example, instead of the normal wireless tether to my macbook. I have set up a receiving server on the Ipad which works well but the problem is when I try to connect from a different wifi the IP address of the Ipad has changed and it does not work. Can you please offer any advice to solve this problem or is it not workable because of connecting through different wifi networks each time. There is no problem ftping images back to my ipad in my home
@neilturner84093 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. You have identified the issue as far as my knowledge goes: Once the IP address of the iPad changes then you have to keep going back and logging the new one in the camera which makes it unworkable. There are third party services which claim to dynamically track the receiving IP address and allow you to send to a specific URL that they then route to via the tracking. We tried this a couple of years ago and it was patchy at best. Another option if the client is actually there with you is to use the Camera Connect app and send images to the iPad that way. Alternatively you could upload the images to a fixed or a cloud FTP server and the client can view them from there or use Photoshelter or a similar platform as a slightly more expensive but very versatile way of working. None of them are perfect solutions but I can confirm that I have used all of them and that they all work.

Can it be configured so that the photo is immediately transferred to the server? Without pressing set
@neilturner84095 жыл бұрын
Yes it can - in fact that is the default as far as I can remember. It will transmit every single frame without being told to!

Can you keep on shooting while is transferring the file?
@neilturner84095 жыл бұрын
Yes you can keep shooting although I have found that more than three images in a queue can occasionally have a transfer fail if you do.

Does this also work with sending video?
@neilturner84095 жыл бұрын
No idea. I don't shoot video on the 5D4 often.

What is an FTP server, where does it live? I'm completely lost, is it my Sky router connection thing? I've tried looking it up on wikipedia, but it's a language I don't understand. I jus want to transfer the images from my compact flash to the PC and the all in one card reader is having none of it, it's taking me forever!!!!!

To quote a Google search: "An FTP server is a computer which has a file transfer protocol (FTP) address and is dedicated to receiving an FTP connection. An FTP server needs a TCP/IP network for functioning and is dependent on usage of dedicated servers with one or more FTP clients. In order to ensure that connections can be established at all times from the clients, an FTP server is usually switched on."

@@neilturner8409 I gave up Neil,went in the attic and dug out the cable to connect it straight to my PC.
@neilturner84093 жыл бұрын
@@Nugget2on1 If it is a direct connection then use the free EOS Utility software - we use it a lot sometimes with a USB cable and sometimes using wifi.
