I don't think it does matter. As you say it's just a number for NOW to base you future training on, I personally hate the 20 minute indoor FTP test. I sort of fail on it 50% of the times I do it, whereas outdoors I'd be fine. I personally prefer the ramp test version which gives me a number close enough for me to work with.

I think the last time I did one, it was the ramp test. I forget though, it's been a while and there's many to choose from!

Can choose any route for the test. Could try turning ERG mode off too

Yeah, I posed a question on the Zwift riders Facebook group, seems having ERG mode on was my issue. Plus, as you say, I'd I'd have gone on somewhere like AdZ I would have had a much better result. Either way though, it doesn't really matter, as long as it's a bigger number in 3 months time, then again another 3 months down the line.

@@CycletheNation ERG is great for workouts as it sets the resistance relative to the wattage. For an FTP test it's best it is turned off unless it's a Ramp test as again the trainer sets the resistance relative to the watts so you don't need to constantly flick through your gears.

@cyclethenation the most important thing is that the test is repeatable to get consistent data, other data coming in is irrelevant as there’s too many variables (ie Zwift racing). Definitely turn off erg to do the test (unless it’s the ramp test). And come in to do it fresh, ideally a rest day before or at least an easy day. Erg on and physically tired isn’t going to give an accurate(ish) result. Keep up the great work, love following your endeavours/journey.

It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers. I’ve entered my first Fred whitton in 2024. I’ve started training using trainer road and that’s much better for a training plan for the event. Hoping to go under 8 hours although not sure how realistic that is

Hi mate, good to hear you’ve entered the Fred, hope you got a place! Speaking from experience going sub 8 is definitely achievable on your first go. Just need good consistent training from now until may, with plenty of hills and some big rides (>70 miles). I’d only done >100 mls once before the big one but would advise getting as many big rides in as possible! Good luck 🤞🏼
