Wow, Durham has changed so much since I lived there. I had friends from Whitted Junior High an Durham High that lived over on South Street and Enterprise Street. Back in the late 60's & 70's, I never heard anyone refer to that part of the city as the Southside. However, it makes sense. I grew up in North Durham near Alston Avenue. We didn't have so much gangs back them but I remember attending Whitted Junior High School on Umstead Street. The people from North Durham hung out with each other. The people from the Westend hung out with each other. The people from Waltown hung out with each other, and the people over near Whitted and Hillside communities hung out with each other. Most of my friends I grew up with and attended East End Elementary, Whitted Junior High, and Durham High are dead or have moved away from Durham many years ago. 😢 😭 I miss home but I no longer no my way around Durham due to the many changes and gentrification. I've been living in New York City for the last 47 years and my children and grandchildren were born here. However, when God calls me on to Glory, I want to be taken back home and buried in Beechwood Cemetery with my mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Given a shout out to Durham High School class of 1973. 👌

I'm from the real Durham. 1993 street vet. North Durham Canal St. Back when all the projects was on 🔥. Shout out Few Gardens, Fayetteville St, Hoover Rd, Cornwallis, Damar Ct, Braggtown, McDougal Terrace, and them boys getting money on Rosedale (West End) and Southside. Wasn't no gang shit back then. Sometimes your hood might go at it with another hood. It was mostly Durham against everybody else. Shout out all my Potnas I came up with from Salvation Army, John Avery boys clubs all way to Hillside and Durham High to them streets getting that 💰💰💰💰.

I am from North Durham near Dowd Street and Alston Avenue. I grew up in the 60's attending East End Elementary School. Canal Street was a dirt street and I didn't go over in that area much. I left Durham in the early 70's heading North for better opportunities after graduating from Durham High in 73. I went on to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. moving to New York City after graduation in 77. I've been in New York City (Manhattan) for over 45 years and I now consider myself a New Yorker. Most of my friends from back in the day living in North Durham on Elizabeth Street, Gray Avenue, Wake Place, Drew Street, Dowd Street, Alston Avenue, Hyde Park, Juniper Street, etc. are dead or have moved away from the neighborhood living out of town. I am told, they had a North Durham/Albright reunion back in October 2021 and it was a nice affair. It was suppose to be at the old E.D. Mickle Rec. Center but they moved it out on Fayetteville Road. It's been 2 years since I was last in Durham to attend my last 2 aunt's funerals. I know longer no my hometown because they've built the Bull City up. The crime and violence occurring in Durham is out of control. I remember the time back in the 60's & 70's, people could leave their front doors open with the screen door locked in Durham. You now have to have an alarm system and bars on your windows living in the Bull City. A shooting at Southpoint Mall in Durham during the holidays made the national news.
