Hi Sandy, I seem to remember a similar product to this around 2015/16 and it was a scam. When I was in the bike trade we sold Silcolene PRO FST, a fuel system treatment for when you laid up or used a vehicle infrequently. I still use it mainly in the winter months. Seems to work well on my carb fed CB500 and my last XJR13 Atb Pyro

Marine outlets sell more effective solutions, found ethanol sheild to work okay as long as the tank is filled to the brim to get rid of as much air as possible. Age of the horse passed, then steam, internal combustion engines are sure to go the same way. I would not mind an electric bike if it had a proper range, but unfortunately private transport may also go all together..

I would have thought that by running the engine once a week the vibes would help stop the ethanol and petrol from separating. Unleaded petrol doesn’t store well either, apparently it emulsifies (so I have heard).

Here in the US we can buy ethanol free gasoline in cans for our yard machines (strimmer, mower, snowblower, etc). My small engine mechanic said the ethanol runs too hot for small engines, and does break down faster than straight gasoline. I also use what is called "fogging oil" that you spray directly into the cylinder before prolonged storage.

I have a 1976 1500 spitfire ,i also have a 1989 Suzuki RM250,and i also have a chain saw,that said it's obvious i need to protect the carbs from oxidisation,the tanks,lines etc. Some years ago i used to buy MX mags british and american,one of the american mags had as usual a letters page,one guy had problems with water getting into his fuel tank via the tank breather pipe. Apparently according to the magazines reply,boat yards and boating stockists can and do sell a chemical that boils off any water that gets into the fuel,be it diesel or petrol,i can't for the life of me remember the full name,ANHYDROUS something or other,i think i still have the mag around,but any boating yard etc should be able to help,along with some stabiliser the E10etc should be fine. You can always do a youtube search on separating the ethanol out of the petrol to get the problem done away with,MPG will be the same as you'll lose volume,but you gain longevity of corroding parts . Also i watched a youtube video of an american guy who showed a GMC or ford etc truck/pickup owners manual from the 50s that gave timing figures plus other notes on types of fuel from low % ethanol to pure ethanol,so the whole thing is not new,i think fuel companies just wanted to cash in on fuel sales.

My experience with E5 in my bike has been enough to put me off. I stopped using the bike for a couple of years. Of course, it failed to start (I kept the battery charged) after a couple of months in the garage. I had to take the carb off and found the tiny jet was blocked and the float bowl had a brown waxy stuff in it. It was ok after I cleaned it out but then, after three weeks not using it the jet was blocked again. This happened once more as well. So far I have started the bike and let it run for a while or done a short trip and it has been ok despite not changing the fuel. I actually filled the tank to the brim before this started and added redex to supposedly stop the fuel going stale. The tank being full to the brim caused the plastic latch in the cap to swell and I thought the key would snap as I tried to get it off. It took a while to discover that the plastic bits had swollen up I ended up having to shave the plastic away till I could get it to fit. Also I forgot to mention, the plastic fuel pipe had split as well so I put that down to the ethanol. The bike is a Gilera ST200 (Piaggio 4 stroke). It has done just about 9000 miles since new in 2009. Every time the carb is taken off I loose coolant as I have to disconnect the pipes that heat the carb. So I will definitely steer clear of E10 and just get ripped off for Shell Premium at £1.65 in my local petrol station. Now that goes for my car too.

Many thanks Sandy, I'll look into these and ask many questions. I can't say my bike has had any issues with E5 and standing idle for 3 or 4 months as it always fires up first time and runs smooth. I have tried this E10 garbage and the big V4 didn't like it at all, the engine didn't run as it should and mileage drop was very noticeable, so that tank full was the first and last tank full. I now only use premium E5 and the engine is happy again, a little costly but biking / motorcycling is a hobby and so for me fuel costs I don't really care about. But yeah, I'll surely look into this little gadget and thanks for the heads up 👍🏻. Will look forward to your new upload from Wales, and wishing you and the family all the very best.

Urrrhh, lots of people are stressing about this. I'm a classic mini owner which is 'sensitive' to this issue. If people are really that worried in the E10 change, simply wash the ethanol out of the petrol with water. This will remove some of the other additives that aid cold start, so you will have to put an additive back in the fuel once you've washed it. or just use Super unleaded, that's staying at E5 until 2025. (in the UK)

I guess the Fuel Diamond is worth a try. Does it eventually dissolve inside your tank or is there a chunk of material floating (or sinking) around in the tank forever? I might be a little concerned about it interfering with the fuel pick up tube or the fuel gauge sensor. I guess that it is not supposed to though. Thanks for the info on this Sandy, I am anxious to see your next video of your next trip to Wales. Take care my good friend and happy travels to you and ol' Chug.

I reckon it’s hocus pocus. The ethanol will still be very hydroscopic, attract moisture and separate. The ethanol will still attack certain seals and hoses. I think the best solution is that before any period of lay up for the bike you fill up with Esso supreme + 99, which apparently, in most of England (although, not Scotland, Wales or parts of Cornwall) is completely ethanol free. It has to be labelled as E5 by law, but that means up to 5% ethanol and within those geographic parameters Supreme+ 99 has zero. All ordinary unleaded petrol deteriorates fairly quickly in octane. It’s past it’s best after three months. The best fuel of all for a low mileage bike (or lawnmower, generator etc.) is alkalyte petrol. It has a shelf life of three to five years. It costs £20 for 5 litres, so too expensive to do any real mileage on, but it might not be out of the question for one pre-winter fill per year. The product sold in the UK is Aspen. It’s available from garden machinery shops.

Some Diesel fuel info to add if you don't mind Sandy, When I worked at Austen Trading at Chricklade we had a company van and a staff car that had fuel sludge build up in the diesel tank, both only ever used fuel from the on site tank and we suggested that, the tank was checked and was OK. However after I moved moved to Devon during lockdown at the garage I work for now we had a Volvo diesel stop with the same sludge in the tank, we clean the tank out twice before finding out its called Diesel Bug and is a bacteria that grows in low grade diesel. There is an additive that is used in heating oil tanks that can be added to vehicles, So from my experience low grade bio fuels will kill the combustion engine. "Diesel Bug"

We still have a choice in Aus of 91,95 or 98 octane ethanol free fuel. I know of nobody who puts that E10 in their vehicle. I had to sell my 72 Norton on account of unleaded fuel problems, it only ran properly on 98 octane. @jag1970s3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for raising this issue. Apparently, when E10 was introduced in Germany, the green lobby were very cynical about it, not only complaining about lower MPG but also about the use of land to grow big monocrops of biofuel. So this certainly isn’t going to be enough to save the planet and may age your vehicle and cause other problems. Until electric bikes become a little cheaper, I will still be needing a fossil fuel one... According to the Esso website, their ‘synergy 99’ unleaded (the alternative to E10) actually contains zero % ethanol in most parts of the uk (2-3% in a few more remote places) despite being labelled as E5. It is more expensive, although you are very likely to get more MPG. I think I will use it over winter or other periods when I’m using the bike a little less. Keep up the good work - I’m a big fan of this channel. J

Now then, Mr. Wiltshire, I think that perhaps previous "politically motivated" opinions haven't necessarily been well-received on your channel, but I have to say (as a "classic motorcycle owner") that the writing on the wall is clear, as far as I can see. All manner of measures over the recent past *seem* to point towards motorcycles and cars being "not wanted on journey". Can't say that I don't see the big picture, and freely admit to perhaps being selfish, but my motorcycle feels more and more like my last bit of freedom, and that freedom (like 'Wild Camping'?) does seem to be in the cross-hairs. No need to respond - these opinions are purely mine own, and I'm often wrong. Well, most of the time, really. Noticed the price of E5 lately? Or is it all fuel? Enjoy your trip, W.M. Look forward to that Himalayan "long term review", too.

Yes Barry I have put my foot in it on a few occasions but for sure the internal combustion engine is for the chop. The future is electric it appears and from what little research I have done that appears to have a carbon footprint too. One very green solution is to keep the internal combustion engine and fuel it with hydrogen. The exhaust gas would be steam. The only problem is somewhere along the line something has to give because the production of hydrogen requires energy too.....Lets go back to the dark ages, looks like thats where we are headed, most of us anyway. No doubt the super wealthy will still have their jet planes

Get an electric ⚡️ motorbike. 😉 😂 I remember in my time as an aircraft refueller, we had this problem if a plane was sat for sometime. The cure was we stirred the tanks to stop any separation of the fuel & just water checked it.

Out here in the Balkans i dont think we have that fuel, just normal unleaded. I would be more concerned about the guv plans regarding any modifications to bikes/cars being outlawed.

It's a bit unsettling what they are planning, maybe it's for our own good, but I do think the writing is on the wall for the internal combustion engine

You had this bike for 2 years before dropping in the fuel diamond, and I'm assuming you experienced none of the issues you describe during 2 years of ethanol based fuel, so you didn't really need it. Nothing in the description has happened to either of my bikes or the bikes of my riding buddies, or even my military vehicles that get used infrequently, and it takes a whole year in an open container for fuel to go stale and uncombustible. These re melted bits of roofing lead have been tested countless times and they are all the same as each other except the claims get wilder as the price increases. The wildest claim is that the RAF put them in pool petrol during WW2, that's all pure rubbish the RAF used 100/130 octane fuel shipped in from the USA.
@WiltshireMan Жыл бұрын
It's probably a load of twaddle to be honest but my mate Colin swears by it. Over the last 2 years the bike has been regularly run so the ethanol fuel has always been fresh
@BrianthatiscalledBrian3 жыл бұрын
If it doesn't work, at least you'll know when you need petrol, as it will rattle around in the tank. 👍🙂😇

I hope not, I hate rattles and the bike rattles enough anyway:)

1) A fool and their money are soon parted. 2) To store any engine drain the tank and run the engine out of fuel. Seal all the holes. I learned this when I was 6. 3) When that stupid device blocks the tank pick-up on the highway and you need berries you'll be sorry. Dangerous. And when the numerous chemicals in fuel break that stupid thing down into sludge you'll be sorry too. 4) Air and moisture are the enemies of fuel. Either use the engine regularly or keep the tank completely full. Facts for the dopey people who read this far : Regular Unleaded fuel lasts 6 months when there is no oxygen (air) present. Diesel fuel lasts 12 months when all air is excluded. Get the fuckin' thing out of your tank.

you have to wonder if the reason behind ethanol is the environment or just to make petrol unstorable.

I'm not sure what the real purpose of ethanol is, they say it makes emissions cleaner, but now we need to put more fuel in the tank to do the same distance. I think ethanol sucks

There's nothing you can put into a tank that will stop ethanol attracting more water, over winter brim your tank to reduce the airspace, save your money.
@WiltshireMan2 жыл бұрын
I think brimming the tank is a good thing also
@sarkybugger50093 жыл бұрын
It's a scam, Sandy. The Hotmail address should have been a red flag, without the "Military" BS, and the A4 leaflet. Diesel doesn't have ethanol added, and lasts for years if you keep water out of it. All modern engines run fine on E10. If you're worried about laying it up for the winter, drain the tank, and run it dry. Sorry you fell for the hype, and the FUD that's been floating around.. All the best.

I agree , what a lot of nonsense. I’ve not seen the slightest change in my fuel economy or how my engine runs since the change. I have worked in an industry that makes ethanol for almost ten years , I see what is does and what it DOESNT do to rubbers , metals , ptfe , viton and bla bla bla , I have no worries that it will cause any damage to my motorcycle .
