Scann Tool used Snap On VERUS Originally went to check this truck with a DTC about high idle so Bring my old Snap On Vantage MT2400 to adjust the idle to spec wish is 1.0 volt to 0.7 volt ..so the truck was in spec...but engine running very bad.. so the next day I bring my fuel pressure gauge because with all the part been change...and bingo this truck have fuel problem as you can see in this video.. we are loosing fuel pressure in the system... and because the return line where is the fuel pressure regulator is a hard plastic we can`t line clamp that line...a fuel injector stuck open will bring the pressure down also..the one way check valve in the fuel pump can bring the fuel pressure down...so that`s way in the end of this video I say further diagnostic require...

2.5l ranger doesn’t have a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. The 2.3 does. The regulator is built on the fuel pump in the tank. That thing he is messing with looks like a regulator but is actually a pulsation dampener. If its not an injector leaking than its could be a check valve in the fuel pump itself. And easy test is to get needle nose vice grips and crimp the fuel line under the truck after the fuel filter. Start the engine and let it die naturally from fuel starvation. Wait 30 minutes and then with the line still crimped shut loosen the line going to the engine on the fuel filter. Wear goggles, and have a rag & jar to catch fuel. Note if there is significant pressure in this line. If there is than check valve is okay; look towards injectors. If line pressure is low than look towards fuel pump.

yoimalex yes! In the video I talk about the check valve in the fuel pump! And that was the problem and the fix!

fuel filter fuel line damage from not using removal tool....loosing pressure @ fuel filter and fuel line connections!🎉

Hey I have the same truck changed egr valve and tube, idle pressure sensor, maf, egr damper, catalatic convertor, plugs wires coil packs, upper intake, fuel supply lines fuel pump, had it to 2 mechanics and the dealership and still no luck. It holds pressure just only 35 psi. Rough idle no power and my oil pressure sensor jumps next step is the relay and the regulator oh and changed injectors also. Have you had any luck on the problem. Same exact truck 99 2.5 side step stick.

charles winters Hey! Have you check in the engine fuse junction box a 15 amp fuse that supply power to the heated oxygen sensor! That’s the first thing I check went you have idle conditions that you described... and If I’m correct I believe that should be more fuel pressure at idle...

I just watch this video I've been having the same issue but I've been fighting I have change fuel pump change fuel filter change sparkplugs all kind of stuff and also getting a no spark situation I did change that fuel pressure regulator at one time but it was on another engine maybe that one's bad any more further to help with the situation please suggest any videos or update video please

Great Diagnostic Video, thank you. I'm having similar situation with 2000 Mazda B2500 SE, standard transmission 2.5L |4cylinder. I've swapped out all the parts you mentioned except for fuel injectors, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump. No Mention of the fuel pump switch inside the cab on passenger side, which has been known to create problems. Is the Red button on the Fuel Switch supposed to stay depressed in the down position? I'm waiting on volt meter, code scanner, & fuel pressure gauge tester before buying anymore parts. Ahhh I see you found it to be the Fuel Pump! So can you tell me if I need the whole fuel pump and related parts & harness? I just can't afford a mechanic. Fuel Pump Replacement is a big job. Any video on replacing the fuel pump. Hey you could use my truck to make a video, I'll do the labor you direct. haha

Thank you Pete for your response. It started running rough, had to almost pump gas peddle to get it to accelerate, lose power, and then take off. Cleaned MAF sensor then changed it, cleaned throttle housing, new IAC, but engine light came back after 3 days. Start became intermittent, new battery. Failed to start. Crank/no Start. Change up + down O2 sensors , hiccuped around the block- won't start now. Crank / no start. Once got it to start by hitting the bottom of gas tank where Fuel Pump is, but that won't work now. :)

Ax4400 sorry! I want you to crank the engine and watch the check engine light on the dashboard ... The light should light up went you cranking and then go off went you continue cranking ! This is unique by Ford means the ECM or PCM engine computer seeing the RPM wish is provide by the CKP crank position sensor! Loosing power in ford cult be Fuel delivery! Mass Air Flow again MAF control fuel delivery only went the engine is running so you clean the Mass Air so that is out of the way! But no power went the engine is running if the Mass is not it then is a restricted catalyst converter and to get that out of the way you have to take HO2 sensor upstrim the one close to the exhaust manifold out.. And do a road test if the power is back means is restricted ... Try to get DTC if you can but you have to get that fuel pump running... Make sure to the anti- theft light is not flashing...

What are you sorry about, I appreciate your trying to help. Check Engine Light is not going on now when I crank the truck, I think because I had disconnected the battery when I changed the new IAC.

Did you ever determine the problem with This? Mine is a 97, 2.3L Ranger, which has a returned fuel system so its KOEO and KOER are lower to begin with. I cant generate any priming pressure at all, and it runs low at even high rpms. No change when I disconnect pressure regulator. It seems to be running lean when hot. I have heard about these check valves going out or possibly the tubing from the fuel pump, so pumping fuel back into tank and it doesn't seem to be reaching engine. any help would be awesome

Pete Sambolin thanks for your reply. Just think this is a bit strange, because don't fuel pumps go out all at once? was it the check valve or do you know that? I have checked the current on mine and it seems a bit low like 2 A. strange.

agentssith was the low Fuel pressure and the check valve on the fuel pump! Was returning to the fuel tank! Went ever you accelerate a engine with vacuum fuel pressure regulator the fuel gauge should go up a few pounds not down a few pounds! And went you turn the engine off the fuel pressure gauge should maintain pressure not loose pressure right away!

Thanks brother, I have a course of action now! Has to be be check valve, because pump still works, just shitty. Would you recommend I replace the whole pump/sender/assembly or just the check valve/pump? Sorry I don't know if the check valve is separate on this or not! Hard to find a diagram or tear down!

agentssith okay is the fuel gauge is working good the only thing you have to change is the fuel pump! Otherwise the complete Fuel sending unit..!

I have a question regarding a 99 Ford Ranger 2.5 L I believe it's an inline 4 cylinder. It has sat for a year without starting. Im sure all the oil has dripped clean down to the pan. Other than draining the oil and putting new oil in her and changing the oil filter, is there anything else I can do to protect the cylinders before firing her up so the pistons dont score the cylinders? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ahead of time for any suggestions!

Ricky Ric you can take the spark plug out and spray DW40 ! Crank the engine with the spark plug out! Then install new spark plugs change the oil and filter! After you gating running for two day change the Fuel filter! Check the air filter if you don’t see the sun light true it change the air filter! Good luck!

hey I have a Ford ranger 1998 3.0 xlt step side, i changed out my fuel filter and hooked up my guage which reads 30psi but goes no lower or higher, is my regulator busted? Also more info about truck that lead up to problem was me not driving it with gas. truck will fire up but idle erratically until a shut down. if I engage in gas the truck dies immediately aswell, appreciate it peeps

The pump gas sensor is either telling the computer it has alot of fuel.. ooooorrr your sending unit is acting up. Either way changing the pump is a fix if your dont want to replace 1 part on the pump.

Hey my friend the presure regulator is on the fuel pump and the part you called presure regulator is ainjector pulse regulator you really are looking replaceing fuel injectors .

Tony Cotta in this particular ford is no fuel Pressure regulator in the fuel sending unit... if you see the fuel Pressure regulator in the fuel rail is control by vacuum or fuel Pressure Damper how ever you want too call it... know that mean if you accelerated the engine mean zero vacuum and zero vacuum on a fuel Pressure Damper or regulator means if the fuel pressure is about 45 psi should increase 3 too 4 pounds if you have a decrease means bad fuel pump or fuel pressure Damper or regulator! Know in this particular case the return hose is hard plastic so I cannot clamp the line! And that’s is that...!

I have a 96 2.3 ford ranger that was running find until this passed Sunday I noticed if I accelerated hard it would stumble bog out then eventually get going ? Would you happen to no what would cause this ? as far as I no the spark plugs and wires are original with 125K on them . And I already cleaned the MAF sensor. Any help would be greatly appreciated

SocalYzF710 sound like a Mass Air Flow sensor problem... That's just a guess so is a 96 you can check the OBDII for memory codes and from there I can give you better direction where to start your troubleshooting!

Pete Sambolin no codes were saved ? I cleaned the MAF and put a new air filter and it’s still doing it just not as bad. I’m really thinking it’s the plugs and wires but I’m not to sure
