WOW! What an ordeal. Now i see why the shop's charge so much. Think mine is gone, I've tested what needs to be tested and it all points to that. I've got a '99 Montana with well over 200,000 miles and have never had it replaced, so pretty sure....it's time. Thanks again for sharing this...GREAT video!!

Thanks for your video, you teach well! I imagine you eliminated the fuel filter as a cause first since you sound like you know what you are doing. Your electrical measurements and the specs you obtained show you have the patience and knowledge to diagnose instead of throwing parts at it. Am subscribed.

Thanks, Robert. Yes, replacing a fuel pump is too much work to just be "guessing." And this one was especially tricky because it was still working somewhat, not just completely dead. Thanks for watching the video!

Thanks for the note. I agonized over the troubleshooting of this project, as the fuel pump never just up and died, which would have made the diagnosis obvious, but kept working albeit weakly. It's been over a year since I did the repair....still running great.

I have a 2001 Chevy venture 13 months ago I had problems with my gas gauge not working correctly then I would lose power when stopping or even when taking off. I had a new fuel pump put on 3 weeks ago and sending unit still doing same so I got another new one and I just had that one put in today and I’m still having the same problem. My gas gauge isn’t working correctly. My wires are good and my fuses are good. I’m lost on what to do now

My 03 venture had a weird issue.... one time I cold started the van and a minute later I had to go back in my house to get something I forgot so I shut the van off then when I got back in the van to restart it it wouldn't start I had to crank it 3 times than it started up which I thought was weird..... the van was up to date with maintenance new sparks oil change new head gasket fuel filter etc. Any feed back on something like that? And I would notice that there where times that I would drive to a store or whatever and when I would come out from the store to the van and would start it I would have to crank it twice for it to start

Thank you for your video. Just acquired a 2000 Olds Silhouette. Starts and runs just fine, but the fuel bump growls pretty loudly, and the supply line pulsates pretty significantly. Sounds like it might be a good idea to pressure test the system (key off /not running & running) and then also test the amp draw on the fuse you show in the video. Does this sound like the correct first steps? Thank you for any help you can provide!
@Buckwsr
@Buckwsr 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I suppose the noise could indicate that the pump could be on its way out. Those would be useful tests to run. It would be worthwhile to change out the fuel filter if you haven't done so already. Fuel pressure regulator might also be worth checking. Start with the easy stuff before condemning the pump.
@allenbraga6159
@allenbraga6159 5 жыл бұрын
Since you had a fuel pressure tester connected at the engine, there must be a schrader valve near there. One of the first steps should have been to bleed the fuel pressure at the valve before disconnecting any lines at the tank or filter. That would have prevented the fuel spraying all over the place when you disconnected the line. There will still be some dripping - especially from the filter but nothing like what you experienced.
@Buckwsr
@Buckwsr 5 жыл бұрын
Good point. Not sure why I didn't de-pressurize the line first.... Possibly I just forgot....
@allenbraga6159
@allenbraga6159 5 жыл бұрын
@@Buckwsr LOL! It happens! I didn't search through all of the comments to see if that had already been mentioned but I assume someone looking at your video might not do that either so now it's more "on top". Besides, not all vehicles were blessed with a schrader valve on the fuel line.

@@justilianoacevedo2185 In another video I saw someone remove the fuel pump fuse and start the engine to depressurize it. I guess the engine fed off the pressure that was built up until it couldn’t run anymore.

Very helpful! Thanks! . My chevy venture has 2010k miles. And a month ago started with hard starts. Pulley tensioner moving a lot. So i replaced. Even spark plugs. Fuel filter. Hair filter erg valve. Cleaned the pcv valve. Removed the carburetor. Cleaned. . Still same shitt. So i noticed the fuel lines are empty after an hour or so. Will be this my problem?. And sometimes running the van shuts down it self. I start again and keep moving. Not often. But yes. So if you can respond to this. Thanks again!
@Buckwsr
@Buckwsr 6 жыл бұрын
What year is your venture? they were made from 97-05, so surely it is fuel injected, not carbureted. So your comments about removing the carburetor are puzzling. Possibly you mean the throttle body? Is the check engine light on? If so, get a scan tool and see what diagnostic trouble codes are being set. Some places will do the scan for you for no cost. That may help you identify the source of the problem, or at least point you in the right direction. Good luck.

On a 1- 10 difficulty scale, 10 being the most difficult, how difficult was it getting the tank back up in and the vent tube reconnected properly? And what/where did you connect that pressure guage to in the engine bay?

If say a 5 or 6 on the difficulty scale. The fuel pressure gauge connects to a Schrader valve on the fuel rail at the engine.

“P0171,” you say? Mine was a pinhole in a rotted rubber cap on the intake manifold. Same year. That said, I got a P0452 a week later and the shop is trying to tell me they can’t find the “EVAP system pressure switch” it needs. From what I can tell it’s readily available and goes right into the fuel pump… which they replaced a year ago with a noisy piece of aftermarket junk that was within a dollar of the OEM GM part. They probably just don’t want to admit it’s the pump since they’d be on the hook. Crooks even stole 12.5 gallons of gas.

You should have measured the wheel base in order to get the PROPER FUEL PUMP MODULE. NEW PUMP DOESN'T MEAN QUALITY PUMP. IF IT ISN'T ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURED, CHANCES ARE IT IS A JUNK AIRTEX FUEL PUMP. BROKE BEFORE INSTALLED AIRTEX PUMPS LAST ABOUT 1 - 2 YEARS BEFORE TOTAL FAILURE. I HAD A 2000 GMC SAFARI MINIVAN AND IT ATE 4 FUEL PUMPS IN 6 YRS. TOO BAD THEY WASN'T AC DELCO OR DELPHI FUEL PUMPS. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!
