1) Make sure you disconnect the battery 2) Release pressure from the fuel tank by opening the fuel cap before doing this and that will stop the fuel pouring out
@hardlymovingpro5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to disconnect the battery. Everyone wants to feel safe by unnecessarily disconnecting the battery. If you really want to avoid any fuel spill, disconnect the plug from the fuel pump assembly, start the car and let it run until the engine stalls out from fuel starvation. Removing the fuel cap does nothing.

I used the old tooth brush to clean off the top so it didn't get dirt in the fuel. Then I stuffed the area around the hole with paper towels. Great video! Could a bad fuel pump possibly cause a P0430 code (catalyst efficiency below threshold)? I have a 2002 Camry V6 (176K miles) with this code, and thought maybe my catalytic converter was plugged up, as the performance has been lacking. It passed the back pressure test with flying colors, so now I'm wondering about the likelihood of a plugged fuel filter or bad fuel pump. I couldn't locate a schrader valve to do a fuel pressure test, so now I'll try to find out how to test the pump. Thanks!

Nope. P0430 isn't a fuel related problem. Have your converter checked out. If the input temp into the cat is the same as the output temp, your converter isn't working anymore.

Good, informative video. 👍🏻 Don't know if you can edit a video that has already been uploaded but if not, maybe you could add the following tip to the description. When you're ready to remove the fuel line, start the vehicle, remove the fuel pump's electrical connection & allow the car to continue running until the fuel that was still in the line between the pump & the engine has been used, at which point the engine will stop running. This step will dramatically reduce the amout of fuel spillage from the removal of the fuel line. 👌🏻 👍🏻 👍🏻

A habit of running the fuel tank to empty ruins fuel pumps. People don't realize that fuel in the tank serves as a coolant for the pump. Another cause may be too much back pressure from a clogged fuel filter (that's integrated in the assembly). Lastly, could be a low quality fuel pump. The OEM pump is made by Denso. Could be a lot of possibilities. Hard starting when the engine is cold, hot or all the time? Did you check the condition of the MAF sensor, vacuum tubes, intake manifold & plenum gasket, air filter air hose has no leaks and clamps are on tight, no stored MIL codes, ground wire contacts, fuel filter, plugs and O2 sensor okay?

I have the same problem with my 2008 ES350 (Camry V6), I changed the fuel filter and the fuel strainer. It has a hard start when cold, after it starts, if you turn it off and back on, it starts smoothly. Before changing the filter and strainer it started fine. Nothing else has been touched. I replaced the air filter, cleaned the MAF and Throttle Body (like a month before changing the fuel filter and strainer).

Per the Toyota technician's service manual: Run the car with fuel pump disconnected until the car quits. This will depressurize the fuel lines. *this process also works when replacing the fuel filter.
@hardlymovingpro4 жыл бұрын
Yes ... you can do that ... but I like to use the fuel spill over to clean up all the dust and debris with compressed air.
@ms84344 жыл бұрын
@@hardlymovingpro guessing it leaves a nice smell as well. There is a reason Toyota has it in their service manual. Safety. The fuel tank has lots of debris. That is what the fuel filter is for but if someone follows your instructions and gets gasoline in their eyes...
@hardlymovingpro4 жыл бұрын
The access cover separates the tank and pump from the interior. Therefore any fuel spill stays outside. The pump ring and surrounding area is usually covered with debris which should be cleaned off before pulling out the assembly. I use to use compressed air and brake clean (more flammable than gas). Then i figured out to use the gas from the release of the fuel line. BTW - the people writing the repair instructions are newbie engineers with no hands on repair experience.

How dirty was the fuel pump filter. The reason I ask is because I’m thinking about changing mine I have a 2010 camary wih a 130,000 miles and I talk to a couple people and they say they really don’t get dirty is that true did you find that with yours. Yours didn’t look really dirty but then again I couldn’t really tell. Great video, thanks
@hardlymovingpro5 жыл бұрын
I would agree that it didn't look dirty but it's made out of some plastic polymer material and who knows if it'll break down over time. In some past cars I've worked on that had been idle for a long time, some would not start due to traces of dissolved screen material clogging into fuel pump's intake fuel port. These pump filters are cheap and many replacement pump kits come with new screens. Also, not showing proof that the filter was replaced with the pump may void any pump warranty claims.
@lukeskywalker3545 жыл бұрын
I totally agree and I would most likely replace mine when it gets close to 200,000 miles and the fuel pump. It’s better to keep up on the Preventive Maintenance than to wait the last minute when your fuel pump has broken down because of age and old filter. Anyway thanks for the quick reply. Keep up the great videos.
@hardlymovingpro5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The key to pump longevity is to not let your fuel tank go below 1/4 of a tank. The fuel acts as a coolant to keep the pump from overheating. The people who brag that they can drive their car to near empty are the ones whose fuel pump fails and are scratching their head as to why. After my explanation on fuel cooling, they're speechless and give me a dumb stare. This is no different than people who ride the clutch at a stop light hill instead of using their brakes and wonder why their clutch burned out in 30k miles.

@@hardlymovingpro. Where can I get the tool you use for disconnecting the electrical plug, I saw another video and this guy actually broke the locking tab and I don't want to do that, the reason I need to remove the fuel pump on my 1998 Toyota Camry le 4cylinder is because there's a gas leak on top of the fuel pump it looks like is coming from the fuel line but I need to remove the electrical connector first and then the 8mm bolts to have a better look at it, fortunately for me I got another 1998 Toyota Camry that I'm not driving and I'm going to have the junkyard get rid of it but the fuel pump from that car is perfectly fine so I'm just going to remove the whole unit from one car and install it on the other more likely that will take care of the leak, the only challenge I see is disconnecting the electrical connector and the also the fuel line locking tabs on the fuel line hose. @@kashie007 While I do my own repairs because I enjoy it and it saves a boatload of money, anytime you're paying a tradesman lots of money to do something, you're paying for their experience and knowledge not for how long it takes them to do something. The rip is always in the dealer marking up the price of a part they buy at wholesale to a price higher than retail. If I can buy a part at Autozone for $200, which is already high because you're paying for the convivence of them keeping the part in stock and having to maintain a storefront, the same exact part shouldn't be marked up to $300 when the dealer is installing the part.
