This was the fix for my 3 yr old Troybuilt Pony lawn "tractor" I even had to replace the leads to the fuel solenoid. I had made 2 laps around my yard mowing when the motor died then wouldn't restart acted like it wasn't getting any fuel at all. Thank you!

a friend gave me a troybuilt 18 hp mower because he always had trouble getting it to start , i unscrewed that very same solenoid , took it to my bench grinder and ground the tip off it put it back on the mower and never had another problem with it starting , took 6-7 minutes start to finish to fix it haha

My X320 was hard starting but if you put some fuel in the carb (Kawasaki 22 HP) It would start and then run. Took carb off twice, blew back fuel line from pump, new filter, new pump tested Solenoid on spare battery, worked fine. Multimeter showed 12.6vdc at battery but the hot lead at the solenoid was only 10 vdc. Traced solenoid wire back through 3 connectors and at the 12 pin connector near the ignition switch, one of the 3 yellow wires only had 10v. Sprayed it with Brakleen, (very tiny connectors) and wiped the male pins clean. Turned on the key and heard the click. I expect that after dumping some fuel in the carb that it started and produced enough running voltage to keep the solenoid open. Runs great now and I have a spare fuel pump! It is 10 years old, 244 hours and does a beautiful job. Completely different deck suspension. Looking for 2 - 8" JD chrome hubcaps.

Update : put on a new carburetor on the 21 HP John Deere , fixed it - but had too use the old fuel solenoid . Somebody before me unwired the fuel solenoid and I didn't know it . You just don't know when you work on something what somebody else has already done too it . Anyway done job 👍

Helpful hint folks. Once you clean the solenoid connect the wire back and turn the key while you watch the solenoid. If it does it's job you will SEE it work rather than reinstalling and hoping. Hope it helps y'all. Blessing to all.

Thanks for that tip! Mine didn’t work. After a few minutes I looked to see if it had power, and nope it didn’t! That’s why mine quit working. I did put a bolt in bottom of fuel bowl and it started right up. Going to chase the bad power spot tomorrow and put solenoid back in and all will be good again.

Another symptom is hard to crank like this. If your mower starts out like this one was doing but eventually cranks it can be the same issue. Once running it's fine but just a pain to crank. My solenoid was bad and was frozen in position. The plunger was halfway so it was getting fuel just took 10-15 seconds to crank over. I replaced it and the needle valve and it's fine. My needle valve tip was slightly bent. As already stated, you can cut the plunger off the solenoid and it will run but if it has a gravity fed fuel tank you need to add a shutoff valve because if you dont and the needle valve goes bad then the gas can flood the crankcase

i have seen the rubber tip come loose and shut off the fuel flow thru the main jet while mowing. i just removed the tip and put a manual shut off valve in the fuel line

I cleaned the electrical connection and it started right up, but then died the next day. Turns out the connector plug is bad, but the John Deere place didn't even sell the connector, so had to solder the wires on. I will be ordering a new connector. I did clean the solenoid up some when I had it out and it was sticking a little. But Deere wanted $115. for it and it didn't even come with connectors.

You mention to add a fuel shut off . I don't trust them if gas gets in to the engine if your lucky it will sit on the piston and hydro lock if your not lucky it go past the piston and start an blow to engine when I see that I always check the oil for gas sniff test

Intriguing problem. There was gas in the float bowl, why did it not start, then die? VW's had a similar solenoid on their carburetors in the late 60s to the 70s. The one on my Beetle would stick. A quick tap and it would operate. Eventually I bought a new one. Thanks for the video.

The plunger on the solenoid plugs the main nozzle when it is stuck so no gas can flow into the combustion chamber.

Fuel solenoid wire that connects to the Box started smoking and melting I turned it off and look and there was a glob of hot plastic not sure what to do 19 horsepower Briggs & Stratton 540cc Troy-Bilt Bronco

The fuel solenoid is supposed to have a ground wire and a power wire. Make sure the ground wire is grounded correctly.

Hey Jeff, mine isn't clicking when I turn the key on but after cleaning it just like you, it still does the same thing yours did. Also it isn't stiff, it moves just fine when I press with my finger. It may need a new fuel solenoid......Old skool method I have heard of folks cutting the tip off , screwing it back in and unplugging the wires and the engine will run fine.

I first saw this video when the issue first happened two weeks ago but didn't want to believe it was the solenoid so I tested a bunch of things and replaced other things until finally I realized it's either the solenoid or the cable. Cable reads 12.6 so had to be solenoid, right? Found a replacement from a guy in town and now she's running like brand new! Thank you for teaching me this. Also, somebody else I talked to did mention cutting the tip off but I wasn't ready to try that until I had a replacement in hand. Again, thanks!

Just cut the plunger off of it and it`ll never give you a problem again. Or replace it with the old style float bowl bolt. Your float needle shuts off the fuel anyway.

@@JeffsLittleEngineService Indeed they are expensive sir, and yes it works fine without it. :) I`ve thrown many away and put the old style bolt in them, but you can cut them off if you don`t mind grinding one of your wrenches down to get it back off later to clean your float bowl, then looking for that particular wrench again the next time you need it. I hate those stupid things, they`re called fuel shut off valves and sometimes anti backfire switches. Useless. If it leaks fuel when shut off it`s most likely caused after they designed the needle valves with a rubber cone shaped tip that goes bad eventually, unlike solid brass ones like they used to be...stupid design changes meant to fail.

I have ran a couple different small engines my own personal ones by cutting the tips off with no trouble. You aint a kidding jeff about those lil buggers being expensive lol

I have a Troy built pony, 17.5 HP won't start clicking sound, so l started with the solenoid, then the battery, starter, and the ignition switch, I have the clicking sound at the carburetor... he lucked up and found but next that might not work if it dont try this when you turn on the keyto run or start you need 12 volts on that white red lead the black is the ground if no voltage go to the key switch you ca press that switch and push it out of the dash where you can see the wires look for the S lead should have 12volts with key on run or start pos if no volts os check b lead goming straight from battery if yoy have 12 v then the switch is bad theyare avail on the net all mowers cheap

This fixed my issue thanks! Been stumped all day why it would start on starter fluid and die out right away. Thought it was bad gas or fuel filter, both of which were old, but after replacing the gas and filter still no dice. I cleaned out the fuel shut off solenoid in about 2 minutes and was back up and running. My lawn and my wife thank you! PS for anyone reading this you don't need to go get a special fuel hose clamp for this since it's gravity feed you can just pull it off the carb, put thumb over it, and rig it up so the end is resting above the gas tank, and it won't flow out. Don't smoke while doing this. I simply hung it on a sturdy wire near the dash. Just be careful nothing knocks it loose or use a zip tie. Also I just sprayed starter fluid in there and worked it up and down... What I had next to me. Worked fine. No special lube or cleaner or anything needed.

I had this problem last year and ordered one from MTD. Turns out, the connection plug would go in either way, so it does matter. The plunger was working reverse to the key. Flipped the connection around and fix it. I started using ethanol free gas to keep it from gumming up again. Great video.

When my engine dies I usually replace the fuel pump and fuel filter and it works, but this time it didn't. I then cleaned the electrical connection and it worked for a day. I'll try this fix now, plus it's a way to clean the bowl I guess.

my Briggs & Stratton, 21.0 is doing the same thing /sound when I turn the key. I sprayed starting fluid in the air intake and it started briefly and then died out. I went ahead and drained all the gas and put in a new fuel line because it looked drive rotted. What can I be doing wrong?

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. The carburetor may be plugged up and needs cleaning

My problem is opposite. Even after shutoff, gas continues to flow, fills cylinders with fuel and then engine wont turn over until I pull the plugs, blow the gas out, put back together and starts right up. Runs fine after that but shut it off and it's the same thing over again. 2019 Craftsman T3100. Any ideas?

For the symptom of engine rotating many times, but won't start, it seems that the choke valve mis-alignment (not truly close) will be another cause. True? My John Deere L118 tractor mower always takes many cranks to start a cold engine. Never had any issue after it got started. Thanks.

Yep! the choke needs to be fully closed for easy start up. It is adjustable to make sure it does this.

You have a fuel delivery problem of some sort. May be a plugged up carburetor.

Great Video. What issue necessitated this solenoid? As a “shutoff”, seems duplicative of the float and fuel jet that’s been on carbs forever! Mine was frozen closed…couldn’t free it. Pulled black plunger off of the knurled shaft. Started right up and ran 4.0!

Good question. It is actually called a "antibackfire" solenoid. Engines can sometimes backfire after you turn off the key and the engine is shutting down. This part can prevent that from happening.

@@JeffsLittleEngineService 😂😂😂Just installed a new carb with the solenoid. Twice it backfired when I turned it off! Oh well! Guess if the fuel jet stuck open and you didn’t have that solenoid, the fuel could gravity fed down through 5he carb and onto the ground.🤔🤔🤔

The ethanol in the gas starts all kinds of problems,especially with small engines that sit idle for a while.Why is that stupid valve even there?Ran a Wheel Horse for 43 years without that stupid set up,no problems.Gas tank and carb was at the same height.They just put crap on because they can,cars and everything else.

@@markrunyon5524 I use to live in Griffin ga the first time I got some gas that had ethanol gas I didn't know what it was so I was told that it's ethanol gas had some problem s with that years later now I live in eatonton ga I have a lot of gas station s around here in eatonton that sel The Good stuff that made my day 😁 so much better than the other junk 🙃

I still have this problem used a new part solenoid brand new!! and no luck! clean carburator no luck also new carburator no luck! . If anyone has any idea what can i do to fix this Unicorn please let me know....thanks!

I had an obvious fuel shutoff solenoid problem. Mower quit while mowing. Tried restarting, etc then saw smoke coming from under hood. Fuel solenoid was smoking. Jerked wires off. Got another solenoid with wire harness and all was well..
