"Fuga y Misterio (Fugue and Mystery)" by Astor Piazzolla, Reaction/Analysis by Musician/Producer
Original Video: • Piazzolla - Fuga y Mis...
Astor Piazzolla is one of the most important musicians of any genre from the 20th century. He almost single handedly redefined the style of tango, and in his compositions, he combined the rhythmic drive of the tango dance form with the Western-European harmony and form that he studied in France during the 1950s.
This piece - Fuga y misterio (translation: Fugue and Mystery) - was written in 1968, and is one of the most electrifying examples of this melding of Argentine tango and Bach-esque compositional technique.
This particular arrangement however was written by the featured vibraphone player from Russia (Andrei Pushkarev) and gives both the vibraphone and the solo violin (played by the renowned violinist Gidon Kremer, who has championed Piazzolla's music in the last few decades) an opportunity to improvise around the fugue's theme when it returns a second time...! The musicianship in this rendition from the two soloists and the amazing orchestra is truly astounding and it remains one of my favourite performances of any piece of music I've ever seen.

As. Argentina (capital mundial del Tango) 🇦🇷

Our beloved Astor lived in the then rough lower east side in New York. The great big bands of the day, klezmer music, all that informs his sound. He set out to modernize tango and did a stunning job. He’s part of our DNA.

I got hooked on Piazzola after seeing him play with Gerry Mulligan many, many years ago. Since then I have enjoyed his music thousands of times. He was an exceptional composer and his work will remain classic. "Fugue and mystery" is an exquisite work, halfway between tango, Bach and the "third stream" of sixties jazz. Marvelous!!

Yes!! It’s brilliant! Thanks Alex! Jeff, if time permits, go down the rabbit hole of Astor Piazzolla, it’s a worthwhile trip. You might even trip over some recordings of Astor’s various quintet ensembles, with himself playing the bandoneon, and in one collaboration with Gary Burton on vibes….outstanding. He also, for years, collaborated with an amazing violinist called Fernando Suárez Paz, who, together with Astor, pioneered some of theses crazy techniques for string instrumentalists we’ve heard here. Often very aggressive, quite percussive, including the chicharra effect (cicadas) achieved by scratching the uppermost part of one of the strings, or using string instruments as percussion instruments by hitting, tapping or knocking them. Then there is that gliss effect, used going upwards on the fingerboard, often like a whipping sound, or going downward slowly, like a street siren in a big city…. it’s an almost endless array of techniques one can learn, to add that extra colour, drive and rhythmic feel to his tango music. Astor’s journey and subsequent blending of styles was so revolutionary, it caused a lot of ripples in the music world, most of all in the established, traditional tango music circles, to the point that he received death threats….on the other hand he also forged a brilliant career with it. The story of how he came to write the music he did, is an interesting one as well. Check out his trip to Paris early in his life, where he visited famous composition teacher Nadia Boulanger to ask for her advice…. Definitely a must: listening to some of his performances with his longtime pianist friend Pablo Ziegler, who also was a crucial factor in bringing an appreciation of jazz to Astor’s music and playing. Here in this performance (what a brilliant piece, and brilliant arrangement of it!) my guess would be that even small bits which might sound improvised, weren’t improvised, though very freely played at times, especially during that slower section. That vibes player, what an amazing musician! Drop dead gorgeous playing, as well as all those killer chops!! And the whole ensemble is so tight!! Since I have a few of Gideon Kramer’s CDs at home (he’s devoted a fair few years of his life to Piazzolla’s music), I’m familiar with that gorgeous viola player. She ALWAYS elevates everything up a few notches, I find, and Kramer’s Piazzolla arrangements usually make sure that she gets to shine :) her glisses ….yeah 💜 As always, thanks Jeff, for lending your ear and heart to great music 🙏 This one made my day 👍

The fugue motive is beautiful and catchy, but what really drives me crazy-in the good sense of the word-are the counterpoints each instrument begins to play when it hands the motive off to the next instrument... the architecture is so unpredictable and schizophrenic, it’s hypnotizing.

I'm proud that you have brought it to your channel! I suggest you continue with Piazzolla's music! I recommend "Decarisimo" and "Escualo", or also "Libertango" which is his most famous piece. He has also written many works for quintet and orchestra. Thank you and a big greeting! 😊
