Over the years Fugazi have achieved this almost mythic status. These paragons of punk ethic. That through Dischord and their business practices took DIY independence to its absolute pinnacle. The band that were super-serious straight-edge vegans that didn't even use heating in winter. The band that never said yes. While their politics and ethics were super important, more than that they were a band that changed things. Post-hardcore, as flimsy a signifier as it is, was the house Fugazi built. At the Drive In, Refused, Glassjaw, Biffy Clyro, Deftones all took note from Fugazi's musical playbook. It is unwise to put bands on god-like pedestals, but in more simple terms than that: Fugazi rocked pretty hard. Many bands have done great things with less than great music. Fugazi did both, but though embellishment and oversimplification they have become an idea more than a band. But let's focus on the band. Who were Fugazi? What made them different? And what makes them so much more than simply the band that wrote “Waiting Room”?

Fugazi are the best. The absolute fucking best. They've never broken up and are still friends. They could still play again some day if they feel like it. I was born in 1981, and was a kid when they released a lot of their music, but got seriously into them in the late 90's. I saw them live twice, and those 2 gigs are definitely 2 of my best ever. I've never known anyone play punk music with the same level of musical ambition and accomplishment as Fugazi. They're super fast, super tight and super versatile. Nobody else can do what they do. The fact they've done all that while being absolute exemplars of integrity and decency in their conduct just blows my mind. There's a whole lot of bullshit around the idea of being 'punk rock', but Fugazi have consistently lived up to every shattered ideal.

They were so much more. I knew Ian and Brendan in the early 80s and they were genuinely great guys. I remember it as a time you would go to shows not because of the headliners necessarily, but to support a DC band; established or not. It was the best time of my life surrounded by the best people I ever met.

Excellent video. Fugazi were the most important band to me in my youth. I had the exquisite pleasure of seeing them play live a total of five times (would have been 6, but my friends and I were in a serious car accident driving to their show on The Argument tour). I’ve seen some great shows in my time, but Fugazi were always the one I looked forward to the most. It was a time when I could expect virtually everyone I was friends with to attend their shows, from all over various parts of my home town, St. Louis, Missouri. As I’ve changed over the years, their anti-consumerism is far less interesting to me, though their intention behind it and overriding attempt to control all aspects of their music is something I will always respect. They will always be my favorite band because of the energy, emotion, innovation, and intelligence of their music.

We (The Random Children) had the privilege of sharing a bill with Fugazi, and Youth Tsunami from NYC at the Creese Student Center on Drexel University's campus in Philadelphia on the 2nd of March, 1991. Our bassist, Brian had started his own record label having been very influenced by the D.C. Hardcore scene, and Dischord Records. We began in a shed in 1988 at 13 and 14, making a surprisingly good recording of "Pretty Vacant" by the Sex Pistols. For the next two 2.6 years, we practiced every week, played house parties, and survived the "pre Nirvana closed mindedness of the pop that was out, and the imitation metal that was great in 1984, but by '88, a lot of bands all sounded the same. Of course, until we put out our first E.P in Nov of 1990, we took a lot of shit from everyone because we dared to look outside of conventional entertainment during a very materialistic time of conformity, and dared to DOS (do it ourselves). Sure, the Seattle "grunge" moment that I suppose began just a few months after the show, and there was already an alternative rock movement that had all of its roots in bands like Fugazi, Husker Du, Black Flag, Sonic Youth, the Pixies, and many groups who paved the way for this "pre grunge" or "alternative" rock movement which attained much more commercial success like could include Faith No More, Jane's Addiction , and others who were a few years ahead of the Seattle thing. Fugazi could have "sold out" very easily, and real talk, I probably would have myself had that show not turned out to be the Random Children's apex. We played many more shows and we released a second 7" inch that summer, however due to literal creative differences (and I didn't want to admit it, but graduation was going to naturally bring about a lot of changes for all)we played our last show at the old JC Dobbs, on 3rd and South Street in South Philadelphia in Feb of 1992. The point of this was more than a trip down memory lane, it was to let the narrator and maker of this mini doc know that he did an excellent job of nailing down the true Fugazi, and to express that out of my long life, this night was a defining night for everyone in that band, and, a lot of our friends who either started their own bands, or had simultaneously started during that time frame who may not have imitated the Fugazi sound (especially me, honestly I liked the early D.C. stuff better and was more a fan of the "proto punk", and mid 1970's punk sounds) but all of us had to change their ways of thinking about a lot of the lies we were being told, every from how to start your own band, and record label, to how much corruption there is everywhere, and change comes from within. They reminded folks that you can go out and have a wild punk rock time, having fun, but people being hurt is not a prerequisite.

Fugazi is the most punk band that doesn't sound like any other punk band and ideologically is sound punk. I blame bands like Fugazi, Mr. Bungle and John Zorn as why I am not satisfied with being simple one genre band and have almost insatiable appetite for pushing sound. From these influences I want to create my own diverse and experimental music that inspires and represents my taste and growth. Of course I enjoy playing straight forward genres but blending genres with improv and innovation is what drives my creative machine, I hope you can agree. If you have read all this feel free to share genre bending, experimental and influential bands with me and any one else who cares. Ill start... Boredoms were amazing live and a band I never though I would see, Yamatsuke Eye is worth an episode on this channel himself.

That was an excellent piece. Didn't know anything about this band. And I rarely listen to anything harder than The Stooges, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get into this, at least some. One quick comment: this video is full of interesting insights...and I get what is meant by "the band that said 'no'" (to artististic compromise, commercialism, to routine, to mainstream conventions, etc.)...But I kind of took the band's apparent central ethic as the opposite -- a kind of "yes." But just as stubborn and determined. They didn't say they didn't want to do something -- they said they wanted to do something else, and weren't going let anything stop them from doing that. Admittedly a small distinction but I think it's an important one, one that opens up a lot of things. That contrarian positivism is one of the reasons I'm so jazzed to find out more about them and their music.

AWOLNATION just released a cover of Waiting Room, it's really good. So good in fact, my wife started singing it. So I got my bandmates to agree to cover it(it was not difficult), I figured it will be a great participation song

15:43 Military acronym? I always thought fugazi was an italian term for fake. Anyway, there's a long instrumental on Red Medicine that is a lifesaver, it's this tense, urban sound with all the corners and jerkiness of navigating the industrial precincts of a city. Edit: I found it! It's called Version and it's only a few minutes long. Damn, that little track stayed in my head for twenty years.

There was a littile too much Britney and a little too little "Turnover" in this video. But besides that yeah, amazing work as usual Mr Trash Theory.

Did I miss it? No mention of buying the CDs directly from Discord for $8-$10 post paid? The record stores used to cover this up with a label.

They are the real deal. They charged 5 dollars a show. They were one of the best bands ever. Ian McKay is the best monotone singer in the scene.

They charged no more than 5 bucks for admission, but (I hear) all DC shows were benefits as well, meaning they made NO money in their home town (from concerts). They are truly more than we all knew. I seen them 3 (or 4) times. Good times.

Before I watched this, to me they were a well respected band connected with the DC scene and they played waiting room. I have a lot more respect for them now and I’ll have to go listen to all their stuff.

MacKaye stopped in the middle of a song to save my mom from a mosh pit when she got sucked in and fell. Broke her ankle but Ian saved her ass lol I am also named after him. My parents couldn't decide on one until after we had already been released and gone back home. My parents listened to Fugazi in the car on the way home from the hospital. I was definitely happy when my mom told me that stuff back in jr high

Years back I was walking down the mall in DC. Clinton's motorcade came through, bunch of cops and sirens and all that. Kept walking and came across a crowd of people around some tent thing, went to investigate and saw there was a stage in there. It was a free Fugazi show. That was a good day.

yeah if you lived around DC in the 90s you could see fugazi for free multiple times a year. fort reno was a given, but they'd usually play 2-3 other free benefit type shows a year. i saw them at least 5 times and don't think i ever had to pay
