John , thank you ! . Last year I commented on one of your videos , as Smithfield , St Sepulchre , to Carter Lane , St Pauls , St Andrews Hill and The Cockpit , all the way to Blackfriars and Ludgate was the area I worked fifty and more years ago . Watching this now, it's as if the years have fallen away, and I'm walking again through those magical streets as night slowly falls returning the City to its history after the noise and commerce of the day . I loved this video and the filming at dusk is so evocative . More please .

A walk full of the atmosphere of the past - which as you say, is probably better captured at night, when the 'present' has faded back into the shadows. Very enjoyable. Keep them coming! Thank you!

Very fitting :)! And another cracking video, very atmospheric. Yes to the series idea and many more discoveries! I'm Belgian but I pop over to London a few times a year, to visit museums and to walk and wander just like you do. I find London so very peaceful, wonderful for 'headspace' (as soon as you walk away from the A roads and tourist hotspots, like you say). It really is like walking through layers in time.

My wife and I were in London last October and our hotel was just a few steps down Carter Lane from where you were filming. We did much the same walk in our explorations, so thanks for bringing back some happy memories! A couple of things I discovered about Christ Church Greyfriars as I was putting together our own little "walks", with the help of a number of your previous videos. Isabella, wife of Edward II, was buried there. Her life was an interesting story. Also, Elizabeth Barton was buried there. She was a nun who made predictions against Henry VIII, with the predictable result that she needed somewhere to be buried. (She made an appearance in the first Wolf Hall series.)

Thanks John, another very interesting walk, its an area I know well, I lived in Amen Court from (I think) 1968, my dad worked at St Paul's and I went to school at the Gatehouse School, named after the Gatehouse of St Bartholomew the Great, where Phyllis Wallbank started the school on Montessori lines.. her husband was the vicar and we did our nativity plays in the church. I used to walk from Amen Court to Dalington Street (where the school relocated) via Smithfield Market every day..

Yes, please to series on Medieval London, Restoration London, Norman London. I enjoyed the dark. It was atmospheric. I find these videos so moving - something about the strata of time together with the fleeting moments in the present - a woman and a dog or a couple holding hands. Then there's nostalgia for all my fleeting moments. I've lived in London for 40 years and have walked through many of these places at different times in my 61-year life. The past is always present here, and also a sense that London has always been very much London, consistent in character, even though it's constantly pulling itself down and arising again.

Christs Hospital was a school endowed by Edward VI (son of Henry VIII) after an inspirational speech by Bishop Ridley. The school moved to Horsham, west Sussex in 1906. Still has heavily subsidised boarding school places for underprivileged children. Pupils wear a very distinctive Tudor styled long coat and breeches and the school has its own railway station on London to Portsmouth line !

Certainly the darkness plays to the atmosphere of a video like this. I hope you had a pint in The Blackfriar, it's got such a brilliant Art Neuveau interior, when you're nearby, well, for me it's not to be missed! Some words on Henry Vll's palace at Richmond might be apposite, maybe a pic or two as there is a bit of it still there! It's almost impossible to put into words, the strange feeling one gets upon seeing a bit of London from a different historical point of view, especially when it's a familiar spot. A certain shiver down the spine perhaps. A pint of decent ale usually sorts it out. A most atmospheric and well presented film! Thank you so much John. ✨🌟👍

Hi John, great video as ever - thanks! I worked in Snow Hill Court, just behind St. Sepulchre in 2009, and later in Aldersgate Street, so this was very evocative for me. Many a lunchtime stroll round this area. I don't know if you've mentioned it in other videos, but the damage to the wall where the William Wallace memorial is located, and also to other parts of that wall, was caused by shrapnel from a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin in September of 1917.

The King's WARDROBE was NOT just about storing the King's clothing...but it also held all his tapestries, bedding and other soft furnishings and furniture. Which his servants would move when the King/Royal Court went on PROGRESS across England to his castles/manors and to the houses of his wealthy Courtiers. ✌🏻😊
