What do you think about using the film simulation dial with custom recipes on the FUJI X-T50? Are there any recipes I should try?
@JackCl342324 ай бұрын
IMO, the film simulation dial works best with the Auto Mode. Let me explain why: The biggest problem with using recipes is that they don't work for every scenario, especially those with strong characteristic, so I have to spend a lot of time changing the settings. As a comparison, the Auto Mode can automatically adjust settings very well, but the photos taken are always boring. The film simulation dial changes that, it really brings a lot of fun to the Auto Mode. Even with a specific scene chosen, I can still get different styles of photos by changing the film simulation. I used to own an X-T20 but never liked its Auto Mode. But this X-T50 is different. I think it changed the way I shoot a little bit in a good way. If you’re a casual photographer like me, try to rent an X-T50 and play it around. I think it makes photography more relaxing and enjoyable.

I don't use the camera to add recipes, I upload them from Fujifilm X RAW Studio. It means you can test and experiment with the recipe using your existing RAF files before going out and shooting with it. It also means you can have *many* more than 7, uploading your favourite 7 to the camera. I shoot raw+jpeg so I always have a copy of the RAF file to go back to and try out different recipes with it in Fujifilm X RAW Studio. Note: Capture One only simulates the cameras Fujifilm Film Simulations, it was good enough, however the only way to get an *exact* match to the output you get from your camera is to either use the in-camera raw processing or use Fujifilm X RAW Studio as it uses the camera itself to output the jpeg, not external raw processing software like Capture One and Lightroom etc. Fujifilm X RAW Studio needs a complete rewrite though, it is slow, clunky to use and not very intuitive for new users. If Fujifilm released Fujifilm X RAW Studio for smartphones, that would be great.

@davevayn3 ай бұрын
Yeah it's really good, if you remove clarity from all your presets you can switch through them much faster since it uses the camera engine to do that. You can then always add it back in later but it's a good solution without deciding on a look but also save editing and do your own individual push and pull cause no photo is perfect and there's always the odd one that's slightly too dark to fit into a series etc. so you can easily adjust and reprocess :) have fun and happy shooting

Hi Bray, enjoy your videos with clear and concise explaining. Very helpful. I've just got an X-T50 and busy learning / setting it up. I've programmed 3 film simulation recipes (Kodachrome, Portra 400, HP5) into MY menu as C1, C2, C3 respectively. However, if for example I go into my menu, select the edit/save custom setting, the 'save the changes' is always greyed out. I have changed the camera to manual, shutter speed, aperture and I still get the same problem. I can edit the custom name, check I've entered the settings correctly, BUT I cannot save the changes. Problem now is when I change the film sim dial to another simulation, my previous custom settings (ISO NR, colour, sharpness etc.) are still active. Its almost like I am locked into the last custom film simulation recipe. Sorry for the long winded message, but it's frustrating as the 'save the changes' option is always greyed out. Had the S9 been in the style of a Fuji I would have been tempted. Panasonic missed a trick using PASM. A retro S9 would be very tempting due to LUTS, as a long time recipe user I find the adjustments available a bit limiting on a Fuji.

Ive just got an X-T50 and have set up some film sim recipes using the custom settings in My Menu. So using C1, C2 and C3 respectively I've set up Kodachrome, Portra 400, HP5. However I cannot save these settings as they're always greyed out. Plus when I take the film sim dial out of 'C' and try to use another built in film sim, my previous custom settings are still active (ISO NR, sharpness, shadow etc). Its is almost like I am stuck with whichever custom recipe I last used, when I come out of it the settings remain. I've tried many things to see why the save changes are greyed out. I would be grateful if you could help with this. Cheers, Paul.

@@BrayGrayy Hi again Bray and thanks a lot for responding. Yes I checked I wasn't in automode (I was in aperture mode), the auto edit/save was disabled too. This morning I was thinking about camera format settings that may be blocking me, so I took the camera out of 'Fine + RAW' and left it in just 'Fine'. Then I was able to save film recipe custom settings 'C2' and 'C3', and then 'C1' was locked / greyed out. I explored the camera further and saw that 'face detection' was enabled, so I turned that off and I was able to save my first 'C1' film sim recipe, no longer greyed out. Am I correct in saying that I have to only be in Fine mode (and not Fine + RAW), and no face detection to save film simulation recipes? Thanks in advance, Paul.

When I go to the film simulation it does not show “off” for me. Am I doing something wrong? My film dial is on C.
@BrayGrayy4 ай бұрын
@@147rambo If you're programming your first recipe, you won't see the "off" option. Once you program your first one (C1-C7) that option should appear.

Are you referring to the custom setting selector for recipes? If so, the setting doesn't work if you're shooting full auto

I don't get the off option too, He is talking about the first step in 3:55 where you selected off in that option
@BrayGrayy4 ай бұрын
@@marintiasinaimercadoascenc7072 Ah, I think I understand now. If you haven't set ANY custom settings (meaning C1-C7 haven't been set), you won't see it because it's already starting from the neutral point. The 'off' or 'nothing selected' will show up once you've programmed your first custom setting.

Make sure you're not switched to auto on the shutter speed dial. Then you should see the dynamic range setting

If you put the film dial on "C" and make sure your camera is set to "M" (or Manual) in the Q Menu, you should be good
@viktorpaulsen6272 ай бұрын
Great to have a Film Simulation hardware dial on top of the camera, except it has to be set to 'C' all the time, so it is basically useless. Did I understand that correctly?
@BrayGrayy2 ай бұрын
It doesn't have to be set to 'C' all the time, but it's best if you keep it there if you're using Custom Recipes. If you just want to use the standard film simulations, go ahead and spin that dial lol.
@eikechronos3066Ай бұрын
I often change the dial even when i am in cudtom recipes if i want to change the look of a specific recipe quickly. For example Vivid for quickly adding color. Bleach Bypass for removing some colors etc.

If you press and hold the DISP/BACK button for a few seconds, a menu will pop up that allows you to remap your camera buttons.

Thank you for the informative video! As a happy X-T50 user, it’s great to see other photographers with this camera enjoy it for what it is: dedicated film sim dial and all 🙂 Also, have you seen and/or tried Ritchie’s bonus recipes hack? could you please help me. in every recipe fujifilm weekly theres always “exposure compensation” where do you find it on X-T50.
@ShangleLP2 ай бұрын
because he does not answered you i try. on the xtY series of cameras there is a dial for this, In the xtYY this should be one of your your front or back dial you can program to. Just look into your settings for the front and back dials and set one of them to Exposure Compensation. Notice!: Exposure Compenstation does just work when 1 of the 3 settings of your Camera is on auto.
@pierredumas7331Ай бұрын
In XRaw studio you can pre-program the exposure compensation in the recipes. More convenient than having to change it manually if you programmed the recipes in camera which forces you to remember the correct exposure compensation for each recipe.
