I love the X10. Thanx for the great video. Many of my friends couldn’t believe it when I manage to get my photos published in a travel mag , and got paid handsomely in 2014. And when they were expecting me to show a huge dslr camera I showed them myX10 . They were speechless .

I've sold dozens of images shot on my X10...granted they were all portraits, not action. Your story reminds me of when I sold an image shot in Boston, with my old Olympic XA manual rangefinder, , bought in 1981 for $99. Proves you don't always need the most expensive equipment to get results.

I started photography an year ago, I bought my Fuji for 150€ back then, before that I was using the same iPhone 6 on vacations, but as soon as I took that Fuji, I can tell you, the contrast, the colors, the film simulations, the manual settings, the LENS..... For me, this Fuji with its price just can’t be beaten by an iPhone. Some people still talk about the small sensor, but because of everything, that Fuji X10 gives you, at this price, it’s the perfect small camera for advanced photographers.

I totally agree with you, this camera offers so much value for the small price tag. Smartphones are great for capturing memories, and are amazing quality for their size, but let's not forget, they are actually a telephone that also takes photos!! (Clue clue is in the name - smartPHONE) If you want some serious control over your photography, the Fuji allows you to change up a gear. Thank you for watching and commenting too, 🙏📸

@@jedonu3684 hi! He mentioned in an earlier video which you can look for that its not ideal for vlogging because it does not have a jack for an external microphone or any jack. The built in one is not that good for what you are looking for. Cameras like the Nikon Coolpix s9900 I think can work great. Or the Ricoh ones.

Thanks for the video! I couldn`t agree more! It is a great little camera, it`s always in my `man bag` and just delivers, yes the autofocus is slow, but you can `pre-focus` and get excellent results. I bought mine second hand for less than 150 Euros, and haven`t regretted it once. 12mp aren`t the world, but they`re more than enough.

Brilliant video! Your comparo examples with the iPhone 8 was terrific. I too have the X10, bought new in 2012. I also have the tiny Canon Powershot S95, another superlative point & shoot. My smartphone is the LG V60. The V60 has the superb Snapdragon 865 processor, a 3.5mm jack, a 32-bit Hi-Fi QuadDAC, a great camera with oodles of manual controls, and expandable storage. I currently have a 1tb microSD card installed. When shooting with the X10, I can quickly pop-in the X10's card and transfer the images to my phone, if I want to immediately send to social media. The X10 is really fun to shoot with...and the glass is compelling. Shooting indoors in low light produces great results. I originally bought the X10 with zero research. I was perusing B&H in Manhattan and happened upon the X10. I was smitten. I bought it for the design and f2.0-f2.8 lens. It looked like a baby Leica. After 12 years I'm still learning new things about the X10. Every time I pick it up I smile. Now the X10 is selling used for $500-plus...and that's still a deal. It's built like a tank and I'm confident that it will be in my rotation for decades to come. Sure you can buy a Sony RX100--a terrific camera to be sure--but there's a soul, genuineness, and authenticity to the X10. And oh, that lens!

I have an X10 and I took it out and shot with it for the first time in a long time and I had so much FUN! I have a modern Samsung S22 Ultra and it has an amazing camera in it, so technically it can do amazing work, even at telephoto with a 10x zoom. But the experience is so different. I find shooting with portrait on a smartphone is always awkward and I'm always afraid I'm going to drop it. By contrast (excuse the photo pun), the X10 is "meant" to be held for photography. It always feels safe and secure and the strap makes it far less nerve wracking to shoot. It's just a lot more "fun" to shoot the X10 than it is to shoot with a smartphone. Now one point though, the price of the X10 has ballooned of late. Here in Canada, they're going for $400-$500+ dollars second-hand, so they're not the bargain they once were. I bought mine 10 years ago for a couple of hundred dollars and I was surprised at how much they've appreciated. But I'll never sell mine. I love the film simulations and, apart from the quality of the images, I just find it more comfortable and enjoyable to use. It's great that my smartphone does so well, for times when I am presented with an opportunity but I didn't expect to be shooting, just having the phone on me is an advantage. But if I'm going out to take photos, I'd rather have a camera that doesn't feel like it's going to fly out of my hands in a heartbeat.

Great video as usual Riley! I am into audio gear and you know there's old 70s turntables and taking the time to unpack a beautiful LP and enjoy its cracky yet warm nature. A bit of nostalgia but also, a wholesome experience. Yet, streaming or handling digital audios is so convenient. I'm not a photographer but I feel the same about "real" cameras vs smartphones. Smartphones as cameras are irreplaceable, with its ease to capture the transcience of a moment; BUT as with LP records, the X10 provides a warm experience that you cannot match if you prepare for the opportunity. Forces you to take the time, capture, re-capture, see the magic (and compared to LP records they're way more modern! :D )

Great comparison Charly, I often think the vinyl v digital music debate is almost identical to the film v digital image one. The X10 is a old school digital, but if you have a second take a look at the Barnack Leica video’s I did or the film Vs digital video. You can find them in my channel. Exactly as you say, one is quick and easy and the other has a charm that can’t be replicated by digital. I’m an audiophile too, long live the Lindek!! Thanks for watching 😊

This is the first time that I watched one of your videos and it was a very informative and well thought out video!! I am some what in the same situation! I have a Pixel 3A cell phone that I bought for the good still photos but the down side is using the phone and being interrupted with phone calls, emails, texts, and social media. I will be going with a new LG V60 and I plan on using my Pixel 3A for strictly a camera. I will download the Gcam to the LG V60 so it has the Pixel camera app. One advantage of the LG is the LG camera app does allow manual. But I am wanting a small pocketable compact camera for something a little better than a cell phone but easy to carry because of it's size instead of carrying my Nikon Z50, D7100, or P900. I have checked out Ricoh GRiii and the Lumix LX100. The downside besides a hefty price is reading concerns about the cameras sucking dust or dirt through the extracting/extending lens and ending up on the sensor. Since they are fixed lenses there is no way of cleaning them except to send them to the manufacturer which some says is expensive. Also the cost of these are not in the compact camera price IMHO. I have considered the Canon GX5ii. The Sony RX100vii could be an all around photography camera but the thought of paying $1400 puts that higher than any of my Nikon DSLRs which doesn't interest me much. I'm beginning to think if buying an older compact camera model would be a good idea or if I should just use my cell phone and if I need something bigger then use a DSLR which would not be convenient to carry with me. Again a really nice video!! Best of luck in your photography journey!! Duane

Thanks for watching Duane, and for your kind words. With cell phone camera and image processing getting better and better the argument to use them as full time travel cameras is becoming a more serious debate. Your mirrorless and/or DSLR’s are safe for quite some time I think, I’m about to launch a video review of some Nikon mirrorless cameras and they are in my opinion a million miles on from phone pics, but the phones have compacts in a fair fight. I just love having a camera to create serious pictures and the great lens of the old Fuji makes it a great camera to consider. Viewers have reported being able to pick them up second hand for under $100 sometimes so it’s worth checking. Good luck with your photography, and camera hunting, you’ll know when you find the right one, 📷😀

@@rileyphotos Thank you for your quick reply!! Not many youtube channels ever reply back so by replying back that was a class act on your part! I'm thinking it might be in my best interest to find a older model to see if that will fill a gap or if I decide I might not get much use out of one at least I won't have a lot of money in one. I will say I find a cell phone or a small compact camera more of a challenge for me because it challenges me in my photography. O have to think about my subject, composition, lighting, etc because its not like a mirrorless or DSLR where they do everything for you. I am interested in doing more minimalist photography for the challenge and foor carrying less weight. Thanks again for your quick reply!! I greatly appreciate it!! Best wishes Duane

I mean, i believe that the biggest sensor size they can put in a phone without it being quirky so far is 1/1.2", which is still smaller than 2/3". But as you said, it's not all bout sensor size and MP.., it's all bout the user experience and usability of it's purpose. If smartphone is enough to take your vacation picture and videos then it's good, so with a joyfull small iconic camera! @@Mondojudo for the price of an X30 you can get the x100 from 2011 and I guess it’s really better than the X30. The X100 has an aps-c sensor, very nice hybrid OVF with a digital overlay which is a lot closer to a film camera, than the X30 EVF and on the X100 you are going to get the unique EXR modes, just like on the X10. I love my X10, which I have had from new. It takes more effort, but it definitely produces nicer pictures than my phone (Pixel 6) It does have to be said that the Pixel can take amazingly good pictures though; it can go to sub-100 ISO and can produce useable images in extreme dynamic range conditions, which the X10 cannot match (we are talking >1600% though) Lastly the night images from the Pixel are stunning and with its 'keep the dot in the circle' system you don't need a tripod. One test where you can see the quality difference in the lens is to take a photo of the moon in daytime. The X10 image shows really good detail whereas the phone can only show a blob. X10s are going for 350€ - 400€ on eBay these days, about the same as a Pixel 6.

This is helpful. According to the photo samples I would not buy the X10, the differences do not justify the size and inconvenience when compared to an iPhone. But I think as kind suggestion, that the samples did not make justice to the X10. At similar distances or frame view they are quite similar. But the X10 would take photos at diferentes ranges, and with very different magnification, as well to handle the background quite differently than it is possible to an smartphone, not to mention the use of flash or portraits.

Actually, the iPhone sensor is about 3x5 mm and the X10 is 6.6x8.8 mm. So the X10 sensor area is 3 times that of the smartphone. Of course, more current iPhones have increased their sensor size, negating some/much of the X10 advantage. And keeping things in perspective, a full frame sensor is 24x36 mm or an area 45 times that of a smartphone, and 15 times that of the X10! But there is much more the the X10 than sensor size advantage: optically, one cannot match the optical performance of the X10 lens within the constraints of the small smartphone glass size; the viewfinder is indispensable in bright sunlight for seeing the subject; a variable aperture lens provides much more creative freedom than the fixed aperture of a smartphone; and obviously from your tests, the dynamic range of the older iPhones is inferior; the Fuji color science is touted with Canon as the best available; and further comparison would likely show the RAW files of the Fuji have more flexibility to optimize in post. Great photographs can be taken with either camera, but don't kid yourself that the smartphone images will stand up to even normal enlargements for hanging on your den wall, or for that matter, cropping to improve composition. Also, ergonomics of an smartphone are terrible. Smartphones are better than nothing, so if that's all you have, shoot a bunch and get better. Then get a camera when you are seriously interested if having your work viewed. BTW, the subtle differences you describe between the two are not very noticeable on UTube, even on my 15" screen, except for the lack of dynamic range in the backlit photos.

One thing always puzzled me. x10's sensor has dimensions of 8.8mm per 6.6mm i.e. its diagonal is 11mm which is roughly 0.43 of an inch. Why on earth it's called a 2/3" sensor?

@rileyphotos
@rileyphotos 3 жыл бұрын
The Fuji is a great camera and you’re right, it looks fantastic, but it is a compact, unlike the Nikon F3100 which is a DSLR. The DSLR will enable you to change the lenses. They’ll both take great photos, I’d advise you to keep an eye on the second hand market, some viewers have reported buying an X10 for around £50. Both cameras will do a great job, whichever way you decide to go, enjoy taking photographs 📷📷📷👍🏻

The only problem for me is that the iPhone doesn’t support the RAW format of the X10, so I can’t upload RAW photos straight onto my phone.
@rileyphotos
@rileyphotos 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point Kimmo, thanks for pointing that out. I’m guessing that most people wanting to shoot RAW files will be hugely into image quality, so not natural cell phone image makers, but you never know, and if you’ve seen my video about uploading x10 images straight onto your iPhone, then that info about RAW images not transferring to them is very useful. Thanks for watching and for commenting, it’s much appreciated 👏📷😊

I got this camera on ebay for £70 🤭😂 that person kind enough to sell me this price with the original packaging too. he didn't use much but working as fine. cuz while I scouring thru ebay, some people selling a whopping £150++ ! I bought it on impulse cuz I saw my friend had it and the pictures are so nice. from my observation here, fuji x10 gives cool tone image which I really like 😃

Yes I would still buy it- I just posted a series of clown portraits on my Insta taken with an x10. Bottom line is the tech is low but the lens is awesome. Have you checked European EBay sites? There are two on U.K. site for under £100 and Japan EBay has loads. If they will ship it’s your cheapest option. Cheers Phil

would the x10 be good fro vlogging? Cuz I'm still a beginner and have not much funds
@rileyphotos
@rileyphotos 3 жыл бұрын
It’s possible to vlog within x10 but it’s not ideal, the picture quality and auto focus is good enough but there is no microphone jack, so you won’t be able to connect an external microphone, you’ll only be able to capture audio from the inferior in built mic, which will get you by if you’re close to the lens, but will drop off as you move further away. It also doesn’t have headphone jack so you won’t be able to monitor sound as you record, and finally it doesn’t have a flip up screen, so you’re not able to twist the screen around to face you to aid composition. All in all, I think it would be worth researching to find an alternative which has some of these things. The X10 is an excellent camera for photography and although it shoots video, it’s not its strong point. Hope that helps, and thank you for watching

Nice video, professional production, intelligent and informed commentary. But I do believe that comparing to an iPhone 8 made this video pointless. I disagree with the reasoning and because of this, the usefulness of this video is limited and somewhat irrelevant.

Oh dear, sorry you didn’t enjoy the video. Quite a number of people have told me they don’t bother taking a camera on vacation, they just shoot on their iPhone. It thought I’d take just a light hearted way of having a look at the results from both side by side .It’s aimed more at the occasional photographers.that shoot everything in their phone. Your comments are most welcome though, it’s what photography is all about. It would be a plain old world if we all agreed on everything. Thank you for taking the time to watch, I really do appreciate every view and comment. 🙏🏻

I’m based in the U.K. and not sure if these sites are in The US, but there will definitely be similar ones. I use EBay, Gumtree and Pre loved as the main three used sites. I’ve also bought lots of used gear from MPB, a site dedicated to used camera gear, but I’ve also used lots of independent camera shops too. I’ve just checked The U.K. EBay shop and there are 4 x10s, three of them are under £120 at the moment. You’re right, the second hand value has increased since the video was made, but it’s still a lot less than the US price if that is above $250. Might be worth checking U.K. and European sites and seeing if they ship to the US? Hope that helps, best of luck with the search, I sincerely hope you find a good one 👍🏻

Hi Frenz, yes the price of the X10 has been creeping up as people realise how good they are. If you buy from a store offering warranty with the camera the price is not too bad. From EBay you can pick them up cheaper but it’s buyer beware down that route. I hope you enjoy the camera, please let us know how you get in, or send in some sample images on Instagram with the hashtag #uk.rileyphotos and I’ll get the on the channel. 📷👍🏻

@rileyphotos
@rileyphotos 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Frenz, if you’re looking for that x10 lens then you could widen your search to include the x20 and x30 which were the models that replaced the x10 and are fitted with the same lens. Not quite the same stunning looks, but with the same lens and chip, performance I’ve no doubt is equal. The x20 added an electronic viewfinder instead of the optical one in the x10, and the x30 added a tilting screen and the ability to connect to your mobile phone, which would be a pretty good feature! Happy hunting, I hope you find one soon 👍🏻

Haha, you right there Sharky. The reason I used that phone in this fun test, was that the X10 was announced in 2011 and the iPhone 6 launched in 2014, so they are a similar age and a similar price on the second hand market. I’m not suggesting anyone buy an iPhone 6 now, but I did review the iPhone 8 camera vs the iPhone 12 camera this week. Take a look on the channel, I was surprised by the results!
