Thank you guys for delivering a balanced assessment between these two great lenses. Based on your review I think I will go with the f2. It is a similar dilemna I had with the 35mm f1.4 vs the 2. I chose the latter for the same reasons you outlined her in your video review. Keep up the great work.

Which one should i buy, The 23mm or 35mm on crop sensor for street or travel photography?

Interesting indeed. I think I remember the x100 also had that loss of sharpness / soft glow effect when shooting at wide apertures. One point of difference missed was the push pull manual focus feature in the 23mm f1.4 that is quite nice for manual focus.

Thanks, really excellent review. I was worried about the separation/bokeh I might sacrifice coming from the f/1.4, but it seems it’s only when you directly compare the two that you notice an ‘issue’, otherwise the shots look great and it’s so much nicer in other ways. Would really like Fuji to update their 1.4 and 1.2 primes with the new fast, silent AF and WR, though, so I can have both worlds!

Also I'm wondering if you have tested the video auto focus at different frame rates? I tested it for a few minutes in a camera store, and I found video autofocus to be dramatically faster in 60fps than in 24 fps. I didn't get enough time to make a proper test though. What's your experience?
@EvidentlySomething8 жыл бұрын
glad to see you here again, cuckoomusic! Interesting idea, haven't tested this yet since we kept shooting solely at 24 fps. In addition the optional Battery Booster Grip surely also improves AF performance a lot - we don't have one yet.
@EvidentlySomething8 жыл бұрын
using the performance boost mode, that is
@truecuckoo8 жыл бұрын
Evidently Something I'm guessing that the AF engine is perhaps analysing the image at the frame rate you're shooting in. So 60fps is more than twice the amount of data, plus smaller motion increments per frame - perhaps yielding both faster and more reliable focus. When shooting stills the EVF frame rate is even higher, right? And perhaps achieving even better AF results.

Just got one and I agree. Since I have the 16mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4, this fits great into my kit. I think it will be staying on my camera a LOT. The 35mm 1.4 is just a little funky and noisy--worth it for the image quality in more controlled situations. But for running around and snapping quick and quiet shots in all conditions, this lens is just about perfect. (I love the 16mm 1.4 and use it more often than I thought I would, but it's much heavier and probably more wide angle than you would want if you're often shooting people.)

Love, love your videos. You guys are so stylish! This video made me so relaxed with the simple and soothing presentation. I myself chose the f2 over the f/1.4 after trying it out. I don't need the fancier bokeh and slightly better IQ, I'd much rather have this form factor and portability while travelling (weather sealing too!!). P.S. Nice Tiger Balm ointment ;) lol
@EvidentlySomething8 жыл бұрын
Thank you SyndicateR1! Tiger Balm ftw! if you are shooting more on the go and like to be flexible with the camera, the new F2 is perfect. Except for close distance shooting, where the performance drops dramatically as we showed in the episode. Have fun with your great new lens!

Thanks for a really nice review (also a good length). I have seen other reviewers speak about the differences in image quality between the 23 f2 and the 23 f1.4, but this is the first review I've seen that showed these differences. Now I understand the trade-offs with each lens better. I'm actually quite curious about the range of opinions about this lens - all the way from "one of the two must buy Fuji lenses" to "utterly disappointed." Some of this might come down to people's expectations (we've been waiting an awfully long time for Fuji to make this lens), but I'm wondering if sample variation is playing a role... I really like the style of your videos. Very informative, and you're both elegant and natural at the same time - there's no hype. (We don't know your names, so Ms female presenter: you're just lovely.)
@V4D26 жыл бұрын
Brett Patching hehehe... I was trying to figure out wether I could find your names somewhere, too. I''ve just bumped into your channel via the X-H1 review. And I came here to see if you guys maintained the output quality, throughout your videos. I must say it is very solid, and I agree with Brett here _ elegant/subtle and informative. No hype or over the top shenanigans.. Very solid . Congrats ! Mr Male's B&W snap/candid of Ms. Female amidst the video..is 5stars, in my book ! Keep it up! and , Thank you ;)

Great review. Thanks. That contrast in the lens I think looks quite cool, but perhaps is also adding to the busy kind of bokeh. I'm wondering, how close can you get to the subject before that unpleasant ghost blur is starting to appear?
@EvidentlySomething8 жыл бұрын
we needed to stay about half a meter clear of the subject to see get good results. The lens is lovely sharp, the macro / close distance performance is quite a let down, though. So if you need a lens for close shooting definitely look for an alternative.

I have both. On the X-H1 the extra f-stop combined with the IBIS makes taking photos at night with low ISO great. The f1.4 is slightly sharper all around, but the f2 version just works better on my new X-Pro3. (I have a set of primes for my X-H1 and a set of "Fujicrons" for my X-Pro3. And yes, I'm single.) Either way, both are great lenses. Fuji doesn't make any bad glass with the 16mm f1.4 being one of the best lenses anywhere and on the other end even the 18mm being pretty good.

Excellent video. Straightforward. It's been a great resource for me. I'm a working chef in NYC and plan on purchasing the Fuji XT2, primarily for documenting my finished plates and some instructional video. I also will begin to pursue street photography and plan on traveling globally for leisure. For my 1st lens, I'm leaning towards the 60mm f/2.4XF Macro..my second I thought to go with 23 or 35mm F/2.0 ....My last camera was a Canon Eos 1N with L series glass. What do you think?
@EvidentlySomething7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Roberto! Have not used the 60mm macro yet. I would think a regular lens should do the job of documenting your plates just fine, except you would need to get really close, of course. As we showed in this episode, the close up sharpness of the 23 f2.0 is really disappointing, but otherwise very, very good. But since you also mentioned Video as another purpose in your case might I suggest the fabulous kit lens, the 18-55? It is probably the best quality kit lens of all the manufacturers out there! It also has Optical Image Stabilisation, which is coming in really handy with the X-T2, that has otherwise no Stabilisation in-body. And for video this is pretty important, unless your using a tripod or a gimbal of course. The 18-55 will produce nice food shots, too. Maybe take a look at our Hong Kong Vlog, pretty much entirely filmed handheld with this lens.
